21st November 1950 Thomas Brooks Craig born, Penilee, Glasgow. (1974-78)
Scottish international midfielder who was spotted playing for Aberdeen by Sheffield Wednesday who paid what was then a record £100K fee for a teenager to bring him to Hillsborough in 1969. The same fee took him to Tyneside in 1974, with his debut coming against Carlisle on Boxing Day and his first goal against Spurs the following month. A stylish midfielder, Craig was popular with the fans and appeared in the 1976 League Cup Final defeat at Wembley by Man City. His only senior international cap came later that year, in a home friendly victory over Switzerland. Transferred to Aston Villa during Newcastle's relegation season, later moves took him on to Swansea City, Carlisle United and Hibernian. Craig began his coaching career at Easter Road in 1985 as assistant to former Magpie John Blackley, later moving on to work as David Hay's number two at Celtic. A return to Pittodrie came with Roy Aitken, followed by Tommy's appointment as the Scotland U21 boss - along with other SFA duties, including oveseeing coaching courses. 1998 saw him back at SJP, appointed by Kenny Dalglish (whom Craig had played alongside for Scotland schoolboys).
He remained there until 2006, mostly working as reserve team coach but also briefly filling in as caretaker manager between Dalglish's departure and Ruud Gullit's arrival. Following his departure from Newcastle, Craig teamed up with John Collins at Hibernian, but his second stint there ended with him following Collins out of the door - having succeeded him briefly as caretaker boss. Craig remained out of football - save for some freelance scouting - but was seen watching games at SJP in 2008. PS: Tommy's younger brother John also played in midfield, appearing for Aberdeen, Partick Thistle, Hearts, Morton and Keith.
1968 Mark Robinson born, Manchester.
(1993-94) Arriving from Barnsley at a cost of £450K in March 1993, this right back was part of Kevin Keegan's recruitment programme as promotion to the Premiership began to look inevitable that season. While his fellow new arrivals Scott Sellars and Andy Cole both had injury problems of their own, Robbo however saw his own hopes of making an impact on Tyneside disappear in a pre-season match at Hartlepool United. A tackle from Pools defender Ian McGuckin left the Newcastle player with a badly broken leg that placed his career in jeopardy. And while Robbo returned to play for the club in January 1994, he was never the same again and had crucially lost his pace. Newcastle actually made a profit when Swindon paid £600K for Robinson in July 1994 and he went on to be a good servant at the County Ground until a hernia problem forced him to give up full-time football in 2002. Dropping down to non-league, he played for Chippenham Town before finally retiring.
1976 Sam Aiston born, Newcastle.
(1994-95) Winger who came through the junior and reserve ranks at SJP but never made it to the first team. He later played for the mackems, Chester City, Stoke City, Tranmere Rovers, Northampton Town, Burton Albion and Wrexham.

1981 Luton Town (h) Brown 2, Varadi Hill, Moss 21,084 A classic encounter with the quicksilver front combination of Brown and Varadi leading the Hatters a merry dance and taking a 2-0 interval lead. Second half goals from Ricky Hill and David Moss, together with Brown limping off injured appeared to have blown it, but a late strike from Varadi sent the crowd berserk. Brown later said "I heard the cheers as I came back down the tunnel and when I saw the crowd on the pitch I knew we'd won it.'

1992 Watford (h) Peacock(51), Lee(57) 28,871 Hornets player Gerard Lavin was sent off for two bookable offences within seconds; firstly kicking the ball away at a free kick and then encroaching from the wall before it was taken. Robert Lee scored his first goal at St.James' in a Newcastle shirt after Peacock had seen a penalty saved at the Leazes End and Lee pounced on the rebound.
1993 Liverpool (h) 3-0 (3-0) Premier League Cole(4,15,30) 36,246 A demolition of the Reds by Cole who hit three identical goals from three identical left wing crosses in the first half past a bemused Bruce Grobelaar. Footage of this match was later shown in court as the goalkeeper and his accomplices stood accused of match rigging. What was never questioned was the complicity of the whole Liverpool team in letting United rip through them at will and being utterly hopeless in front of goal until three down.
2001 United came back from two goals down to level at 2-2 against Liverpool Reserves at Southport's Haig Avenue thanks to Jamie Coppinger and Jamie McClen. However, Richie Partridge won it for the home side with three minutes remaining to spoil second string coach Tommy Craig's 51st birthday.
Michael Chopra claimed a hat-trick as United won 3-0 at Bedlington Terriers in the Northumberland Senior Cup.
Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas signed a new five year deal designed to keep him on Tyneside until 2008. The 20 year-old commented:
"Moving to Newcastle United 18 months ago has proved to be a terrific career move for me. This is a fantastic club and a marvellous place to play your football.
"I hope over the next five years, we can build on our success over the last two seasons and I am looking forward to being involved with a strong and successful team.
"Also, I would like to thank the fans, who have given me fantastic support since I joined the club."

20th November Robert Roxburgh, 78. (1920-24)
1978 Paul Robinson born, S*nderland. (1998-2000)
Kenny Dalglish did his old Anfield team mate David Hodgson a favour back in March 1998, paying £500K to sign the two promising strikers in his Darlington side - Robinson and James Coppinger. After having made his debut for the Quakers first team at the age of 16, Robinson appeared for Newcastle's reserve and junior sides, getting his senior team chance at SJP under Ruud Gullit. Preferred to start up front in the infamous monsoon derby game while messrs Shearer and Ferguson glowered from the bench, Robbo's sole goal for the club was a mis-hit shot from two yards out in a 2-2 home draw with CSKA Sofia. Sold to Wimbledon for £1.5m by Bobby Robson in July 2000, he then bounced around clubs at bewildering speed, having brief spells playing or on trial at Burnley, Dundee United, Blackpool, Hull, Grimsby, Carlisle, Hartlepool, York St.Johnstone, Ross County, Aberdeen and Torquay. A first drop into the Northern League came with Whitley Bay, to be followed later by stints with Horden CW, Sunderland RCA and Sunderland Nissan. 2008 then saw Robbo declared bankrupt and turning up on trial (in a footballing sense...) at his first club Darlington. However, he failed to impress the Quakers and was released. We understand that he now struts his stuff for a team in the Pallion Carpets 5 a-side league, who play on Wednesday nights at the Crowtree Leisure Centre.

International switch for fit-again forward
Magpie eyes Eagles Comments from Chris Hughton regarding the number 23:"Shola(Ameobi) will train with the Reserves on Monday before joining in with the rest of the squad on Tuesday after Preston. He has made good progress and we're delighted to welcome him back. "It was disappointing for Shola to miss out after the start he had, but he'll be looking to get back to that level and we certainly hope he can because he was excellent for us during those first few weeks."The striker - who recently celebrated his 28th birthday - scored five goals in as many appearances at the start of the season, but has been sidelined since sustaining a foot injury in the Carling Cup win over Huddersfield in August. However Ameobi has now confirmed that he's preparing to accept an international callup from the country of his birth, Nigeria. The former England U21 international told The Chronicle: “2010 is a big year for Nigeria. The African Nations Cup is the same for us as the European Championships is in Europe. It’s a tournament I would love to play in.
“It was a great honour for me to represent England at Under-21 level, and my mum and dad were so proud of me, but they would love to see me play for Nigeria.
“It’s not about changing allegiances. I’ve got Nigerian roots and I’m proud of my country, the country where I was born and spent the first five or six years of my life.
“Playing at the World Cup is the pinnacle of any player’s career. It’s what you dream of, and if I can do that with Nigeria then that would be fantastic for me.
“They have been in touch before to see whether I was interested. In the past, I chose not to, so I could concentrate on helping Newcastle.
“But I have reached a stage in my career where I would love to play international football, and realistically it’s not going to happen with England.
“It has been frustrating to have missed the last few games, but I’m coming back and should be fully fit in the next two or three weeks.”
Reuniting at international level with his former Magpies colleague Obafemi Martins for the Super Eagles appeals to Shola, but his involvement in January's African Cup of Nations would affect his availability for Newcastle. The tournament takes place in Angola from January 10th to 31st and given that the Nigeria squad met up over a fortnight before their opening game (on January 21st) in the 2008 staging, Shola could be missing for up to eight league and cup games. Hughton responded to enquires by saying:
“It’s one that that I intend to talk to Shola about very soon. I was only just made aware of it today. I will see what is thoughts are.
“My only concern at this moment is to make sure he is fit for Newcastle. We need him as soon as possible because he’s missed three months now after a really good start to the season. I want to see him producing for Newcastle.
“Shola is a good lad and a thoughtful lad, and if his thinking is that there is an opportunity to play at international level then I can understand it.”

Old boy in court actionOba-drawn
From the Mail, Thursday:
A former Premiership footballer routinely blew his £75,000 a week wages in a matter of days and was constantly overdrawn, a court was told yesterday.
Ex-Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins, 25, was paid the handsome salary after he joined the club for a £10million fee in August 2006.
But despite his extraordinary earnings, his former management team yesterday claimed they repeatedly bailed him out after his bank account continually slipped into the red.
The High Court heard that the Nigerian international player would withdraw £40,000 in cash from his bank account at the end of the week.
But that would only last him two days, the court heard, as he topped up with a further £25,000 on the Monday morning.
He was always overdrawn and repeatedly relied upon NVA Management Limited to 'manage his life', the High Court was told.
Martins, who owned several fast cars including a top of the range Porsche 4X4, spent the money funding an extravagant lifestyle of luxurious penthouse homes and fine dining.
He is now being sued by his former management company who claim that he still owes them 300,000 for sorting out his finances.
Robert Tennink, for NVA, said: 'Day to day life with superstars is demanding and superstars are demanding.'
He told the court that Martins would withdraw £40,000 for the weekend, followed by another £25,000 on the Monday. 'Despite earning these vast sums of money he was constantly overdrawn,' added Mr Tennink.
He said the firm, which looks after the affairs of several footballers, film and music stars, said that Martins had agreed to pay them for simply managing his life.
It was under their stewardship that Martins agreed a £2million image rights deal 'simply for being Mr Martins'.
It's claimed Martins was constantly overdrawn despite earning £75,000-a-week. He also had lucrative sponsorship deals with various companies including Pepsi and Nike but had not been paid.
When the company stepped in to run his affairs they sorted the unpaid contracts, bringing in thousands of pounds.
They also organised visas when he travelled to Italy, where he once played for Inter Milan, and sorted out his passport, his mortgage and property valuations.
They even arranged critical illness cover and were constantly running up and down the motorway from their London offices to Newcastle in a bid to do all that he required.
'But surely these were things a secretary could do?' asked Judge Richard Seymour QC, referring to the size of fees charged. 'It was a Jeeves-type of role that they performed.'
Mr Tennink protested that managing every aspect of his life was just part of what they did, and asked the judge to bear in mind the sort of figures these players earned.
He said Martins had come to them in July 2007 and agreed a fee of around £300,000 plus 20 per cent of any sponsorship monies they managed to acquire on his behalf.
'He asked for these services to be carried out,' Mr Tennink told the court.
Before they managed his affairs Martins had not been paid a penny for his image rights for the use of his name on Newcastle shirts and mugs and had received nothing from his sponsorship deals.
He could not even find the contracts he had originally signed, Mr Tennink added.
Martins paid the company £67,500 in January last year and another £25,000 in April last year.
But the question for the court to decide, said Mr Tennink, was whether there was a 'binding obligation' for him to pay the outstanding bill of over £300,000.
After Newcastle were relegated from the Premiership last summer Martins was sold for £9million to German Bundesliga Champions Wolfsburg.
Martins, who once owned a penthouse apartment overlooking Newcastle's exclusive Quayside, is fighting the claim. The hearing is scheduled to last for three days.

1976 Wayne Quinn born, Truro, Cornwall. (2001-04)
Left-sided full back/wing back who arrived at SJP on loan from Championship side Sheffield United, having played against us for the Blades in an FA Cup Semi Final tie in 1998. Quinn made his Magpies debut in a 3-1 home win over Coventry City in January 2001 and after impressing manager Bobby Robson, an £800K deal was sealed a month later.
Retaining his place in the side at right back for the rest of that season, Quinn featured in the Intertoto campaign that saw our 2001/02 season kick off in July, scoring against Belgian side Lokeren. However, injury and a loss of form saw Quinn fade from the first team picture and his only two outings of the regular league season came in cup competitions. Joining the first team squad for pre-season games in the Netherlands, Quinn then made what was to be his final senior appearance for United in a Champions League qualifier away to Zeljeznicar in Sarajevo - as an 89th minute substitute. Consigned to the reserve side for the remainder of 2002, Quinn was allowed to rejoin Sheffield United on loan in January 2003, making a second debut in a League Cup victory over Liverpool. Returning to SJP two months later, Quinn entered the final season of his contract in the Newcastle reserve side again, scoring in a pre-season kickabout at Workington. September 2003 saw him loaned to West Ham United, with the recently-relegated side eventually keeping him for the rest of the season - although he made his last appearance in February 2004. A free agent, Quinn appeared on trial at Plymouth Argyle but continual knee problems causing his retirement from full time football.
However Quinn did continue to play at a lower level, joining non-league Hayle in his native Cornwall. Moving on to appear for another set of Magpies - Penzance - he later returned to Hayle and was appointed manager.

Sometimes you've got to get in the trenches and dig out a result."The Colombian won the penalty from which Beardsley scored, but Pavel Srnicek's poor punch allowed Amara Traore to head the ball back over him into the unguarded net.

In summary we griped: "I hate this place - and paying theatre prices to watch unfunny comedies." 2008 Shay Givenwon his 91st senior cap as captain but Ireland suffered their first defeat under Giovanni Trapattoni, losing 3-2 at home to Poland in a Friendly. Damien Duff played three quarters of the game and missed some decent chances before being replaced by Shane Long. Meanwhile, in Glasgow, Jonas Gutierrez played the first 71 minutes against Scotland being replaced by Gonzalez (not our Uruguayan crock, obviously) while Fabricio Coloccini only kept the bench warm. Jonas set up the Argie goal and got a cuddle and kiss from manager, Maradona, at the end of the game.
Lucky him.

Trialist
Pancrate TuesdayHaving joined Newcastle's first team squad for training last week, trialist (pictured) was included in United's reserve side on Tuesday evening. With Chris Hughton among the crowd, the French-born 29 year old played down the right side of midfield and completed 80 minutes at SJP in a 3-2 victory over Hartlepool United. Hughton commented afterwards that:"He did well. We really wanted to see him in a game so we gave him the opportunity this evening. He will be training with us for the next few days and that will give us a chance to have a real good look at him."We already have great quality on the right-hand side with Ryan Taylor, Jonas and Danny Guthrie but he could offer us something different with his pace.
"His biggest asset is his experience – he’s played in a couple of positions, is good on the ball, works hard and I enjoyed watching him tonight.
"It’s not a question of us having to go down this avenue because of a lack of funds. When chances come your way with a player who has played at a good level for a number of years you will have a look at him.
"There is certainly a willingness on behalf of the club that if we want to strengthen in certain areas then yes I will get that support from above.
"It’s not always about players that can go straight into the team. It’s also about having a well-equipped squad to handle the rigours of the next few months.”
Pancrate has previously played for Guingamp, Le Mans, Spanish side Real Betis & Sochaux. Earlier this season he had a trial with Sheffield United and appeared for the Blades reserve team, but no contract offer at Bramall Lane was forthcoming. Ex-MagOld boy gets Rowdy The latest former Magpie to enter the world of football management is Paul Dalglish, now confirmed as the new coach of Tampa Bay Rowdies ahead of the new season. The 32 year-old Glaswegian retired from playing due to injury in 2008 and had been coaching youngsters at MLS side Houston Dynamo. Cu Joey!JFK: has he got the (tartan) arsehole for it? The vacant position of Scotland national team manager has prompted a number of jobless managers to put their name forward, including former Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear (presumably the J of JFK would stand for Jock): “When I left Tottenham I moved on abroad and my first job abroad was as manager of India. I was out there for two years, so I started off with an international side. “I missed out on, I think, two occasions to be the manager of Ireland, which would always have been a dream job for me. “But sure, why not? I’ll throw my hat in the ring (Tam O' Shanter, surely). If they felt they wanted to interview me, I’d be more than happy to go along and talk.”Well that should be enough to get them rebuilding Hadrians Wall - we can just imagine his first press call: "Which one of you is Rabbie Burns?....you're a ***."All joking aside though, given the sad fate of Jock Stein when in post, it was hardly the most tactful of questions to ask someone with a recent history of heart trouble.

1970 Ayr United (a) Young(52), McLean(67)United faced the Honest Men as they celebrated both their 60th anniversary and the official opening of floodlights at Somerset Park. "Cutty" Young put Ally McLeod's side ahead when he knocked in the rebound after Iam McFaul had pushed his penalty on to a post. George McLean then sealed the win when he capitalised on a poor John Craggs backpass.
Tommy Smith also missed a 68th minute penalty for the home side.
United appointed Bill McGarry as manager in succession to Dickie Dinnis. Coming with a hard man reputation to bring the mutinous SJP dressing room to heel, McGarry had His managerial CV had seen him in charge at Bournemouth, Watford, Ipswich and an eight year sojourn at Wolves, moving to Tyneside following a stint coaching in Saudi Arabia.
0-2 Having scored six goals on two occasions and seven once in home games at Kenilworth Road already that season, United got off comparatively lightly.
Live ITV coverage of this game saw United play in their first ever home game on a Sunday. Former Magpie Alan Kennedy made an 18th minute goal line clearance to deny Chris Waddle and with the Reds 1-0 up, Kenny Wharton netted only to be flagged offside.Mick Quinn salvaged a point from a poor display when he scored his 16th goal of the season with a close range header, after strike partner Mark McGhee had flicked on Kevin Brock's corner. No match at SJP, but a measure of the plight of the team when nearly 20,000 fans turned up for an open day - 5000 more than had suffered A 0-0 home draw with Barnsley the previous day.
Gateshead-born United fan Tommy Johnson put Villa ahead only for Sir Les to level - although he left the field on a stretcher, after injuring himself in the act of scoring.
League Cup Fourth Round With messrs Shearer, Asprilla and Rush all missing, Jon Dahl Tomasson led the attack and scored the only goal of the game against Jim Smith's Rams. However United's fitness problems continued as both John Beresford and Warren Barton picked up injuries during the tie.
Gary Speed missed a sitter but made amends shortly after - tucking away a rebound after his first effort hit the post. Dirty Don Hutchison equalised in the second half and Niall Quinn made it 2-1 before felling Rob Lee with minutes remaining. However, Alan Shearer's penalty was saved by Sorensen and a devastated number nine apologised to all and sundry after the game.
United's reserves shared four goals with their Bolton counterparts, despite being a man short after just 14 minutes when Olivier Bernard was harshly dismissed Lomana LuaLua then scored two suspiciously offside goals before the Trotters hit back to claim a point.
The Magpies debuted at the Emirates Stadium and Kieron Dyer roused himself into a rare 90 minute outing that included his first league goal since March 2005.A defence composed of Craig Moore, Steven Taylor, Titus Bramble and Peter Ramage couldn't quite hold out to make us the first visiting side to win there but boss Glenn Roeder was still

1,382 fans were at SJP to see trialist Fabrice Pancrate debut in a wide right role and he made progress down that flank in the opening moments, although Peter Lovenkrands was unable to reach his centre. At the other end, Pools threatened Jak Alnwick's goal and almost took advantage of some defensive laxities by the home side, Leon McSweeney somehow hitting the bar from just four yards out after a scramble in the area. And the visitors took the lead on 25 minutes, when another raid down the right ended with Jonny Rowell centring and unfortunate Newcastle defender Matthew Grieve slicing an attempted clearance into his own net. The Magpies looked to respond and a deflected free kick from Lovenkrands grazed the Pools woodwork with Ben Tozer in close attendance. On 32 minutes though the Dane had more luck, arriving to fire home Airey's low centre from the right past former Toon academy goalkeeper Mark Cook at the Leazes End. And the home side almost went in ahead at the break when Kazenga LuaLua wriggled free on the byline close to goal, only for his effort to be cleared by Ben Clark, with Lovenkrands lurking behind him. An entertaining game continued in similar style in the second half, with Alnwick doing well to deny McSweeney after he found space in the box. Pools took the lead once again after 58 minutes, McSweeney centring from the left for young centre forward Billy Greulich to net from close range. The second equaliser this time took just over a minute to arrive, with Airey racing into the Pools box before claiming his first-ever reserve goal with a calm finish. The Northumbrian-born Academy player who turned 18 last Saturday had another goal to celebrate on 67 minutes, when he left was unmarked to head home LuaLua's corner towards the front post. That seemed to knock some of the stuffing out of the visitors and substitute Samuel Adjei came close to extending Newcastle's lead with a curling effort that grazed the crossbar. Pancrate was replaced in the closing stages of the game after having inevitably faded in the second half, given his lack of match fitness. The 29 year-old Frenchman had exploited the space afforded to him down the flank, supplying a couple of astute passes and coming close with one shot on goal. The argument that signing him up would stifle the emergence of a younger generation of players wasn't enhanced tonight though, neither Ryan Donaldson nor Frank Danquah catching the eye and Kazenga LuaLua in typically inconsistent mood. While there was no sign of Marlon Harewood, Lovenkrands at least showed some willing and took the opportunity to get in much-needed match practice ahead of the first team's return to action next Monday. was in Stuart Pearce's starting XI for this game in Vilnius, striking the woodwork twice and coming close on three other occasions. made the starting XI for this game staged at Scunthorpe's Glanford Park but was one of a number of half time replacements, when the score was 1-0 to the visitors.
18th November 1950 Tommy Cassidy born, Belfast.(1970-80)
Northern Ireland international who played in the 1974 and 1976 Wembley Cup Final defeats. His displays for Glentoran saw a number of English sides watch him, Newcastle agreeing terms ahead of both the mackems & Man United. After having taken some three seasons to become a regular at SJP, Cassidy was a familiar feature in the side, although he did have some periodic injury problems. Allowed to leave in 1980, United actually made a £5K profit when Cassidy signed for Burnley and he helped bring the Division Three Championship to Turf Moor. The final years of Tommy's career were memorable for his appearance in the 1982 World Cup Finals, the last of his 24 full caps coming as substitute in the unforgettable 1-0 victory over host nation Spain in Valencia. By then he'd become a defensive midfielder, gradually dropping back from the striking role he filled in his early seasons into a midfield position making advantage of his good passing ability. A move to Cyprus saw him play for Apoel Nicosia alongside Terry McDermott before moving on to become their manager. Returning to the UK after going public about corrupt practices in Cypriot football, Tommy managed Gateshead before returning to take charge of his first club Glentoran. After a fractious three years at the Oval, Cassidy walked out and managed Ards, later moving on to Sligo Rovers. Workington was his next port of call where he brought some success to the West Cumbrian side during a six year period. However, he remained living on Tyneside and was tempted into taking the Newcastle Blue Star job in 2007 - parting company with them after barely six months.
1967 Gavin Peacock born, Welling, Kent.(1990-93)
An attacking midfielder or striker (with 43 goals in 114 Newcastle starts), Peacock was signed from AFC Bournemouth, having been at QPR and Gillingham earlier in his career. A debut in a 5-4 loss at Leicester was followed by his first goal in the following game, on a desperate Sunday lunchtime encounter at Plymouth that we won 1-0. One of the few Magpies in recent years to have sported a beard (first spotted in a friendly at Greenock Morton when he looked positive biblical). Consistent in a poor team, Peacock kept his place under both Jim Smith and Ossie Ardiles, but came close to departing in favour of Middlesbrough under Kevin Keegan. He remained in Toon however and played his part in both keeping us up - with the opening goal at Leicester - and then a dozen strikes in the following promotion season. After a return to the top-flight had been secured, Peacock was allowed to leave the club in order to return to the London area to be with his family - after his son Jake was born with one of his lower arms missing. Signing for Chelsea he stayed at Stamford Bridge until 1996, netting home and away against Newcastle and finishing on the losing side in an FA Cup final. A move back to QPR then followed and after a loan spell at Charlton, Peacock returned to Loftus Road and played his final game in April 2002 - over 15 years after his R's debut.
Peacock then worked in the media for some time as a BBC TV pundit (having gone for the shaven-headed look) and also presented Songs of Praise. Having never made an secret of his religious beliefs, 2007 saw him studying for a BA in Theology at a college in Cambridge.
Gavin left the BBC after Euro 2008, moving to Canada to begin a three-year Masters course in Divinity at Ambrose Seminary in Calgary. At the conclusion of that, Peacock has said that he intends to become a pastor, vicar or minister.
Going back to his dad Keith (long-associated with Charlton as player and coach), Gavin once had this to say about his childhood:
My dad’s side of my family is from South Shields on Tyneside. Although South Shields is perhaps split evenly between the two persuasions of black & white, and red & white, my family were firmly of the Newcastle camp.
As a child I’d spent many a summer on the beach at Shields and I remember the impact of Kevin Keegan signing for the club in 1982.
In actual fact I had an old grey Newcastle away kit from Keegan’s playing time at the club. As a child I grew up with my dad playing for Charlton so they were the club I supported, but I always had a very strong liking for Newcastle and when I had the chance to move to North East, I grabbed it.
1968 Barry Hunter born, Coleraine
(1987)
Youth international defender who followed fellow Coleraine youngster Michael O'Neill to SJP in 1987, earning a one-year deal.
However he was released after appearing for the reserve and junior sides - the nearest he got to a first team runout being when he and his fellow teenagers showed off the Northern Intermediate League Cup on the pitch at SJP.
Hunter returned to Coleraine and then moved on to Crusaders, Wrexham paying £50K for his services in 1993.
A first full international cap followed in 1995, before a £400K switch to Reading within two years - playing for the Royals in a pre-season game against Newcastle in July 1999.
Released on a free transfer in 2001, Hunter moved to Rushden & Diamonds (having been on loan at Southend while at Reading).
While at Nene Park he moved from playing to managing and was also briefly on the staff at Swindon Town, making the final playing appearances his career for Portadown.Hunter now works as a scout and was on Glenn Roeder's staff at Norwich City, having previously been at Blackburn Rovers.

1977 Newcastle appointed Bill McGarry as their new boss, replacing the recently dismissed Richard Dinnis. Coming with a hard man reputation to bring our mutinous dressing room to heel, McGarry played for Port Vale and Huddersfield and won four caps for England. His managerial CV had seen him in charge at Bournemouth, Watford, Ipswich and an eight year stint at Wolves. A spell in Saudi Arabia followed before he returned to take power on Barrack Road. However he was axed early in the 1980/81 season, thereafter finding employment as a Brighton scout, Power Dynamo (Zambia) coach and Zambian national team manager. The story so far.....2007 saw Toon fan Mark Allison complete his John O'Groats to Lands End charity run, backed by donations and support from many of you. In all he raised over £34,000 for a local hospice. Fast foward two years on and Mark is training for what seems to us an insane challenge - running coast to coast across the USA, covering over 3,000 miles. Fundraising for St.Benedicts Hospice and The Childrens Foundation, this mammoth undertaking is scheduled to be completed in 2011. However the fundraising starts now. And in keeping with modern trends, Mark has now agreed a PFI - that's a Pie Finance Agreement - to boost his fund-raising efforts. For every donated between now and the end of 2009, Peters Pies have pledged to add 50p to that total, meaning that for every £10 fund-raising T shirt Mark sells, an extra £5 will be raised. for the Run Geordie Run website, where you'll find full details of Mark's plans, training and motivation etc. plus links to buy T shirts and make a donation.

1920 Willie McCall born, Glasgow. (1948) Four goals in 16 United appearances for this outside left who joined from Aberdeen and later appeared for Motherwell and Third Lanark.
1935 Bobby Cummings born, Ashington. (1954-56 & 1963-65)
A product of New Hartley Juniors, centre forward Bobby failed to make the grade as a junior but returned to United via Ashington and Aberdeen. A pitman by trade, there were doubtless a clutch of "mining a rich seam" press articles when he began scoring prolifically for the Dons - 47 goals in 87 games. Five of those goals came in a 10-3 cup victory over Clyde, while a hat trick against Rangers at Pittodrie gave him the distinction of being the first Englishman ever to manage that feat against the Ibrox side. However he initially only joined them on a part-time basis, continuing to work in the mining industry in order to deter a call up for national service. With a return to SJP on the cards in 1963, Bobby then appeared as a guest player in Alf McMichael's testimonial match, scoring once and then seeing a £5,000 deal go through. Our favourite Bobby story from his time at United concerns the time that he was once collected mid-shift from Bates Colliery by the police, who rushed him off to play for the reserves as an emergency stand-in. Cummings duly delivered a hat trick in a 7-4 away victory over Leeds United - despite sustaining a kick in the head, courtesy of the great John Charles. Bobby left SJP in favour of Darlington and later appeared for Hartlepool - helping both sides win promotion. A spell in South Africa with Port Elizabeth then followed, before he returned to his native Northumberland and worked for Brentford Nylons after he hung up his boots. Bobby passed away in 2008.1970 Jason Drysdale born, Bristol(1994-95)
Full back/midfielder signed by Kevin Keegan at a cost of £425K from Watford ahead of our second season in the Premiership. After featuring in pre-season however (and scoring in a penalty shootout win against Manchester United at Ibrox), Drysdale never made a single competitive appearance for us. Sold to Swindon Town for £340K in March 1995, he spent three years at the County Ground, before a brief spell at Northampton. A move into non-League circles came in 1998 with Forest Green Rovers, later transfers taking him to Aberystwyth Town, Bath City, Mangotsfield United and Paulton Rovers.

1962 Southampton (a) Sydenham(27), Burnside(76), O'Brien(85)13,582 Another disaster at the Dell, with leading scorer Barrie Thomas missing due to injury. Such was the selection crisis faced by Joe Harvey that reserve forward Charlie Woods almost played his first game since the previous February. Woods had travelled from Tyneside with the squad en route to sign for Bournemouth, but that deal was put on ice until Alan Suddick was cleared to play with a plaster cast on his right hand by the match referee.
The agreed £6,000 sale of Woods then went through and he was rushed by car to Eastville and played for Bournemouth that afternoon against Bristol Rovers - inevitably scoring the opener in a 2-1 win.

That proved to be the only senior goal of his Magpies career and after retaining his place in the side for a trip to Everton the following week, he was never selected again.
1979 Bristol Rovers (a) Shoulder White 7,626Ahead early in the second half thanks to Alan Shoulder, United missed a host of other chances and had two goals disallowed, before conceding the inevitable equaliser.
1990 Barnsley (h) 0-0 Division Two 15,548 A poor game and an equally dreadful display from Jim Smith's depleted side never looked like giving United their first win in seven games. In a sign of the times, a larger crowd were present at SJP 24 hours later for the club's open day - a meet and greet / ground tour affair arranged as part of the abortive share flotation.
1991 Sunderland (a) 1-1 Division Two O'Brien(59) Davenport(21) 29,224 Liam O'Brien's fine chipped equaliser in front of 4,000 away fans massed on the Roker End is overshadowed by the fine free kick he struck the following season, but this effort was no less skilful. And had sub Steve Watson shown slightly more composure in front of goal soon after, then a first away victory since 1956 in this game could have been ours for the taking. However he couldn't direct his header past Tony Norman in the mackem goal. The point was well-celebrated by the away fans who were locked in the ground, with injured duo Mick Quinn and Lee Clark limping on to the pitch to salute them with their crutches.
2001 Fulham (a) 1-3 (0-2)Speed(65)Saha(20), Legwinski(28), Hales(70) 21,159Former Magpie Louis Saha gave Jean Tigana's Cottagers the lead after Robbie Elliott's defensive clanger and a generally poor display allowed the home side to enjoy a comfortable two goal lead at the interval. In a move out of keeping with the rest of the game, Gary Speed then connected with a cross from Aaron Hughes to give the away supporters something to cheer. Unfortunately the revival lasted barely five minutes before Fulham scored again after a scramble from an uncleared corner. Alan Shearer then saw his spot kick saved by Edwin van der Sar, who advanced off his line before the ball was struck, but wasn't penalised by the referee with a retake.
United's performance was about as uninspiring as this bloke's intrusion (see down below) but it was a chilly afternoon by the Thames.... NUFC.com match report

Ten days after that game, Jackie grabbed a hat trick for Newcastle in a 7-4 success at Old Trafford against Manchester United. And he was to join the Reds at a cost of £2,000 in 1934, later playing for QPR and turning out for Carlisle as a wartime guest. After a brief post-war spell with Scarborough Town, Jackie returned to his native Carlisle and again appeared for the Cumbrians before moving on to Brunton Park staff.

Goalkeeper who appeared for our junior and reserve sides but failed to break through to the seniors - getting no further than being an unused substitute in the Premier League at Blackburn Rovers in December 1998. After leaving SJP, Keen was subject to an FA investigation over the sale of FA Cup Final tickets allocated to other Newcastle players for the 1999 defeat by Manchester United. Keen admitted his involvement in what was described at the time as a farcical attempt at touting - as he unwittingly accepted payment in....Monopoly money. Joining Carlisle, Peter had the distinction of scoring a goal in open play the following year - with a mammoth kick from his own penalty area against Blackpool. He later played for Darlington, Scarborough, Gateshead and Horden and returned to the International Stadium in 2007.

Speaking at the end of the first week of their For one reason or another it didn't come to pass. It's extremely disappointing. It's something we'd given up a lot of time and effort and abortive costs with so I've been feeling pretty bruised by the whole process.
"As my wife keeps telling me, 'No-one's died' so you've got to get on. That's fundamentally where I see it now.
"I think from my perspective I don't think Mike Ashley wants to stay at St James' Park for the long term, so I'll never give up. I'll keep beavering away in the background and hopefully one day we'll get there.
"Hopefully he'll make some investment in the club. Hopefully we'll get some commercial partners. Hopefully the money will be spent on the playing squad and that bears fruit and we get back to where we deserve.
"Let's face it Newcastle is a massive club. 43,000 to 44,000 people turned up there the other week to watch Peterborough.
"No disrespect to Peterborough, but they brought some great fans. This is Newcastle United, it is a massive club. It's a global brand and it should be at the top of European football."
When asked about the contentious stadium naming rights issue, he commented:Moat could have passed comment on a variety of relevant subjects regarding his abortive bid to buy the club, but was instead content trot out the SJP party line. This latest SkySports-engineered utterance does nothing to dispel the theory that Moat is simply a stooge for the current regime. Sitting alongside Ashley and Llambias in the Directors' Box and very publicly shaking hands was always strange behaviour for someone supposedly engaged in hard-line business negotiations. The naming of Moat in official club press releases as both potential bidder and then failed bidder always struck us as odd - a luxury nobody else was afforded. We're also deeply troubled by an email from one of Moat's former school colleagues telling us that he used to bring in cassettes of Stiff Little Fingers' John Peel sessions, claiming to be the band's manager.... The young Magpies will visit the Keepmoat Stadium for a 7pm kickoff on Wednesday December 2nd. The West Stand will be open for all fans and admission is £3 adults and £1 concessions - which have to purchased from the Ticket Office (ie no cash turnstiles on the night).

"I would love to play again this season."
And he did. Just.

Parisian Pancrate has previously played for Guingamp, Le Mans, Spanish side Real Betis & Sochaux. Buy Out - update Speaking towards the end of the first week of their initiative, Mark Jensen of the had this to say:“I think fans have every right to wonder if the 'Yes We Can' campaign can succeed, anything that is ground- breaking will attract doubt as to whether it's possible. “The NUST have embarked on an initial six-week advertising and media campaign which will set out how the buy-out of the club can be successful if the fans get behind it.
“This is a very public campaign and it will be up to each individual and company to decide if they want to be part of it, we're very confident that over a period of time the vast majority will see it can succeed and will come on board to help reclaim their club.
“Mike Ashley has repeatedly stated he wants to sell the club and clearly there has been no credible interest, to fill that void NUST have taken up the challenge to lead the campaign to buy the club.
“This is not an overnight idea. Months of planning have brought NUST to this point following countless meetings with prominent local business, financial and civic leaders to fine tune the idea.
“Further details will emerge over the six-week campaign but if the fans can do their bit and show they have the appetite to raise a significant amount of money, local business people have given assurances that they can then do their bit to make this a reality.
“The first stage is to raise enough money to enable representatives to open up negotiations with the current owner, if we reach that point the rest is achievable.
“The response so far from supporters has been unbelievable, together we can do this and have a club we once again can all be proud of. I'd urge all fans to visit www.nust.org.uk to see how they can get involved and very shortly we will be publicising a base in the city where people who don't have computer access can get information."Responding to Sunday's comments from alleged club suitor Barry Moat (see below), Jensen commented that:"We welcome any serious offers for Newcastle but this is Deja Vu. We will continue our fan based campaign to make the club accountable to the city again. "It is only four days in and we've had a massive response pledging investment from large and small investors. We've made approaches to Mr Moat previously and had no reply but we're happy to speak to anyone who has the long term interests of Newcastle at heart. "If he has any ideas about how he would take the club forward apart from carrying on the idea of selling the name of SJP 'for commercial reasons' then once again we would happily talk. "One point of immediate disagreement is the issue of re-naming the ground. We'll be clear, under a Trust led bid there would be no change of name. 23,000 customers asked us not to through our online petition. We have a series of commercial ideas that don't strip out the history of the club and would retain the integrity of SJP".
Journal article about NUST23 people have now added their support to the NUST WaffleFailed bidder Barry breaks his silence Speaking to Sky Sports News on Sunday, Barry Moatsaid: "I think you have to explore things like naming rights - you have to do that.
"Unfortunately we live in a world where football is big business, and the gap between the Championship and the Premier League is getting bigger all the time.
"So you have to do things to close that gap. We need to get back up to the Premier League as quickly as possible.
"I think if you have to do some of those things, by taking the commercial benefit of a sponsor, then as far as I'm concerned if that gets the right players on the pitch, gives you the right entertainment on a Saturday, then where do I sign?"Moat could have passed comment on a variety of relevant subjects regarding his abortive bid to buy the club, but was instead content trot out the SJP party line. We were going to label this as a missed attempt by Moat to communicate with fans, but given that recent events have seen him become totally irrelevant, who cares?Compo Bobby DVD giveaway

Signing claim
IncomingFrench media sources claimed on Saturday that Newcastle were set to complete the signing of Fabrice Pancrate (pictured) - a 29 year-old attacking midfielder/striker who is a free agent after his contract with PSG expired in the summer. We're aware that the club had a player on trial last week and that he trained with the first team squad - these press claims look to have confirmed his ID. Parisian Pancrate has previously played for Guingamp, Les Mans, Spanish side Real Betis & Sochaux. Earlier this season, Pancrate spent some time on trial at Sheffield United and appeared for the Blades reserve team but no contract offer at Bramall Lane was forthcoming. Smoggies beaten byirthday boy Phil
Striker Phil Airey celebrated his 18th birthday with the decisive goal in the Tyne-Tees Academy clash at Darsley Park on Saturday as United beat the smoggies 2-1. The result extended our youth team's unbeaten run to eight games Airey started alone up front with Inman supporting from midfield and after a quick end-to-end start, Newcastle had the first decent chance after ten minutes when a long ball was knocked down by Airey for Samuel Adjei, whose half volley went just wide. It proved to be a sign of things to come as five minutes later Airey, who was a handful all game, had a shot awkwardly parried by the 'Boro keeper. It fell to midfielder Brad Inman who stroked the ball into an empty net from the edge of the area to make it three goals in his last four club junior outings. The goal seemed to spark 'Boro into life and a low left wing cross was missed by Henderson at the near post but the smoggies' striker failed to make a telling contact. 'Boro enjoyed their best success down the left hand side and a great run from the left winger resulted in a cross shot that was narrowly turned wide by a sliding Taylor block. The visitors again went close after 33 minutes when a 30 yard free kick dipped narrowly over with Robinson beaten. They couldn’t turn their dominance of possession into goals and Taylor nearly made them pay just before half time as his header was cleared off the line. The second half began with the visitors again dominating possession without creating any real chances. Newcastle looked dangerous on the break with the sheer physical presence of Airey causing problems for the 'Boro backline. Adjei went close from 25 yards when Airey and McGorrigan combined down the right but the Swede's shot went narrowly past the far post. On 65 minutes, against the run of play Airey grabbed the goal his hard working performance deserved. He knocked down a floated ball from the left to Inman on the right hand corner of the area. The Australian crossed perfectly for Airey, who peeled off his marker to steer his header into the far corner. The goal seemed to spark United into life with Airey having a shot blocked after a wind assisted through ball and Taylor nodding wide from substitute Dan Williams’ corner. Newcastle failed to get the third goal to kill off 'Boro who forced a good save from Robinson with a curled shot from 25 yards. Again though the Magpies rallied, with some impressive play in midfield, especially Inman and the two substitutes Williams and Aaron Spear. A good move down the left hand side allowed Paul Dummett to send over a good looking cross which Airey looked poised to convert before slipping at the vital moment. Spear’s subsequent shot was blocked and after a quick break 'Boro pulled a goal back with a great curling shot from 25 yards out that left Robinson motionless. It set up a nervous six minutes of injury time but United held on for the win, 'Boro wasting a free kick in the final seconds after Aaron Spear gave away a needless free kick and followed up his red card last week by talking himself into a booking. On the whole, 'Boro dominated long periods but lacked the necessary creativity in midfield that Inman provides for Newcastle time and time again, even when relatively quiet throughout the 90 minutes.NUFC: Robinson, Nzuzi, Dummett, Inman, Jeff Henderson, James Taylor, Adjei, Mogwo, Airey, Newton (Spear 82), McGorrigan (Dan Williams 72).
