PUFC: 43,067 including 2,600 visiting fans. Before kickoff, a presentation was made on the pitch to Magpies physio Derek Wright, marking 25 years of service to the club. After the game Chris Hughton commented:"We have got a totally focused group of players who, from minute one, saw an opportunity for us to stay on top of the division, and very much took that opportunity. "We have got used to getting on with the job. There are things we can't affect, but I am very lucky that I have got a group of players who are focused on one thing, and that's on staying where we are at the right end of the table with the ultimate aim of getting promotion.
"We are focused enough and it certainly hasn't taken anything away from the victory."
"It was just what we wanted. We could have made it a little bit more comfortable, but I don't think you can complain too much about a 3-1 victory at home."
"He was certainly delighted with that. We were expecting the mask to come out, but he has probably put it away somewhere."
Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson said:You have seen the team that will win the league. The manner of losing the first two goals was awful. We left ourselves a mountain to climb. They are on a roll at the moment.
"Chris has done a good job and stabilised the whole club, so it was always going to be difficult for us."

Popular defender who came through the junior and reserve ranks at SJP to make a senior team debut away to Barcelona in the Champions League back in 1997. Full international honours first came his way in March 1998 and October 2009 saw him collect his 70th senior Northern Ireland cap. Looking set to become another of United's long serving Northern Irishmen - Iam McFaul, Alf McMichael and David Craig - Hughes was allowed to leave SJP by manager Graeme Souness at the end of the 2004/05 season. Signing for Aston Villa, he later moved on to Fulham in 2007 and remains a competent, consistent Premier League performer. We on the other hand have continued to spend large sums of defenders of varying talent and attitude (notably Boumsong and Moore) - without noticeable improvement.

Positive negativity! Newcastle 3 Peterborough United
1Newcastle cemented their position at the top of the Championship with a fantastic show of strength at St. James' Park on Saturday. The protests against the current regime were loud and vociferous while the support to the team was the best it has been this season and that translated into a dominant first half showing that put Posh to the sword.Jonas Gutierrez broke his duck in spectacular fashion with an amazing mazy run that started on the halfway line and finished with him finding the back of the Gallowgate goal to a standing ovation. A pulled groin saw the Argentinean leave the field but not before Andy Carroll made it 2-0 with a flicked header from Danny Guthrie's corner with just 18 minutes on the clock. Guthrie hit the post as United threatened to run riot but it wasn't until after the break that the lead was extended when Danny Simpson also scored his first Newcastle goal, curling a left-footed shot beyond 'keeper Joe Lewis. That was the end of the contest but we really should have gone on to improve our goal difference but Steve Harper was tested as the half wore on until finally being beaten by Dean Keates with ten minutes to go. The win kept us top of the pile but West Brom's 2-1 success at Leicester keeps them a couple of points behind us. However, we are now six points clear of the teams occupying the playoff positions. After an incident-free first half which saw just one half chance for the visitors, the young Blades went in front in the 52nd minute when Jordan Chapell snapped up a rebound after debutant 'keeper, Robinson had saved. Newcastle should have equalised within seconds when Airey headed agonisingly just past the post but the midfielder beat the offside trap and raced towards the goal before finishing well amid protests from the defence. Airey almost headed a second but United were reduced to ten men when Spear was dismissed for an off the ball incident. Hughton makes appeal: now it's over to you...Speaking ahead of Saturday's game, Newcastle manager Chris Hughton said of the renaming debacle: "I sympathise with the supporters. I am quite sure though that, in everybody's eyes, St James' Park will always be St James' Park. "The fans give us wonderful support and there is no doubt this is their club but, for me, this is a purely commercial decision. To the fans and the people of Newcastle it will always be St James' Park.
"Football matters are the things that are most important to me. I'm trying to keep this team in the position we are now and I'm sure that is what the supporters want as well. It's vital that they continue to get behind us. "There are two ways of supporting a club and, how they do it is our fans' prerogative, it is their club, but my concern is that they stay behind the team. "No other club in this division has crowds likes ours and, after everything we've been through, their backing has been wonderful to see."There's a certain sense of deja vu here, as Hughton prepares for his first home game as the permanent Newcastle manager. In the aftermath of Keegan's departure in September 2008, he took the reins for the first time when Hull City came to SJP - on what became a low point in our history. Mass protests outside the ground and the Cockney Mafia banner inside contributing to an eerie atmosphere in which the players wilted - Charles N'Zogbia certainly distracted by the goings-on as Hull scored what was the winner. As we wrote in our report of that game, "Unfortunately that poisonous atmosphere can only have a negative effect on the team, as was shown today. "We may only be in September but the evidence of this encounter is that we lost a relegation six-pointer, unless something is done very quickly to halt the slide."
On such moments do seasons - and relegations - depend (as well a litany of poor performances, feigned injuries and regrettable transfer activity). Handing three points to the sundance kid's team ultimately put us where we are now. As it was in 2008, the talk is of boycotts - both of club outlets and Sports Direct outlets. Unfortunately, those seem doomed to failure, due to the collective local appetite for A) alcohol before/during/after home games B) cheap hoodies & trackie bottoms. And for anyone who doubts that, recent TV Vox Pops of unhappy fans underline the issue - be it lads condemning Ashley and his schemes before returning to their half -supped pints outside Shearers, or shoppers slagging off the owner, while clutching a Sports Direct carrier bag. The argument of putting further local jobs at risk in a fragile economic climate has also been put forward, as it was last time. The sad reality is that after a year of discontent and numerous cringeworthy episodes, the "FCB" and his sidekick are still in charge - and thousands of punters are paying him £20+ every home game to abuse him. No wonder he's laughing - and dreaming of new wind-ups. The only boycott that will really make a mark is non attendance at home games - we won't advocate it, because we won't comply with it. While we admire and respect those who have opted to stay away until the current administration is toppled - it's not in our DNA. Hopefully the soon-to-be released NUST buyout will strike a chord with enough supporters, businesses and financial institutions to bring an end to the present stalemate. Nothing else looks likely to. In the same way that we consistently refuse to appear on radio or TV for fear of our views being misrepresented as your collective opinion, we certainly won't be advocating that you pawn your family heirlooms or sell your house. What we will ask though is that you give consideration not only to the NUST plans published next week, but also to what you want from this season - and whether banners, chants & protests are the right way to achieve that goal. returning to the Ashley "you win - I quit" statement released following that home defeat by Hull in 2008, he signed off by pledging to be: "...determined that Newcastle United is not only here today, but that it is also there tomorrow for your children who stand beside you at St James' Park."No mention of yourname@ there - and given the lies that have spewed forth from Barrack Road since, there's no reason to suggest he has any interest in preserving the soul or the dignity of this club for future generations.
The only thing that will make him walk away is cash.

Ex-Mag:Loon gets Georgia gig Former Newcastle player Temuri Ketsbaia has been appointed as the new coach of the Georgian national side, two months after his previous managerial role at Olympiakos ended amid some controversy. The 41 year-old is a previous Georgian international and among the players at his disposal when he comes to select a squad is United's on-loan defender Zurab Khizanishvili.
Sat 30.01.2010 Leicester City (a) 5.20pm7th November 1944 John Pickering born, Stockton-on-Tees. Former apprentice, later coach under Willie McFaul.
1959 John Anderson born, Dublin.
(1982-92) Now a regular part of BBC Radio Newcastle's Toon match coverage.
1962 Darren McDonough born, Antwerp, Belgium. (1992-94)
Bought by Kevin Keegan for £80K from Luton, midfielder McDonough arrived at SJP along with fellow bargain basement signing Peter Garland as relegation looked a possibility. In the event we avoided the dreaded drop to Div III but McDonough had precious little to do with it, his two starts and one sub appearance bringing just one point and seeing us concede ten goals. The injuries that had curtailed his Kenilworth Road career ultimately finished him at United and he retired in April 1994. McDonough then returned to the Oldham area, where he'd been brought up and played his first professional football for the Latics, after joining them as an apprentice. He built the house he now lives in and runs a sandwich shop with his wife.
1963 John Barnes born, Kingston, Jamaica. (1997-99)
A mixed post-NUFC career for the man recruited by Kenny Dalglish for his SJP Dads Army - along with messrs Rush & Pearce. A brief stay at Charlton was followed by a reunion with Dalglish, when Barnes took the Celtic manager's job - with Terry McDermott coming along for the ride. However, his Parkhead tenure was just eight months, with defeat by Inverness Caley Thistle the low point (although he did win the League Cup before leaving the club). Barnes then made a career out of TV football punditry and presenting, also becoming a contestant on "Strictly Come Dancing" and supporting various humanitarian efforts for children overseas. Reduced to a part-time overseas scouting role for the mackems, he accepted the job of Jamaica coach in September 2008. Tranmere offered Barnes the chance to resurrect his club management career but after just 14 games and ten defeats he was shown the door. The man nicknamed "Digger" was awarded the MBE in 1998 and has six children - Jamie, Jordan, Jemma and Jasmine from his first marriage; Tia and Isabella from his second.
1967 Marc Hottiger born, Lausanne, Switzerland. (1994-96)
Defender whose major contribution to our history was banging home a great goal in the FA Cup at Ewood Park in 1995- although he did also net to earn us a point at Chelsea. The Swiss international had moved to SJP from FC Sion, after beginning his playing career with hometown club Lausanne Sports. A move to Everton in March 1996 followed a season when he'd barely featured in the United first team, following the arrival of Warren Barton. His time at Goodison was marred by injury though and a return to Switzerland came in 1997, first to Lausanne then back to Sion. He then moved into coaching with Echallens and Neuchatel Xamax in his home country and is now Director of Academy Coaching for the Brad Friedel Premier Soccer Academies. Also involved with the PSA are toon old boys Barry Venison and Scott Sellars, along with Roy Tunks - who was goalkeeping coach at SJP during the Souness era.

Unbelievable x3.A penalty save put Steve Harper into the United history books as the man who finally helped us win a competitive shoot-out.
This was our eighth attempt to win a major penalty contest and the success couldn't have come at a better time as an extra-time exit seemed likely.
Scott Parker popped up with four minutes remaining to take the tie to penalties after Shittu had threatened to drop us into a whole load more trouble with an extra-time header.

6th November 1958 Kevin Carr born, Morpeth. (1976-85)
Goalkeeper who came to United via a brief spell at Burnley and made his first team debut midway through the 1977-78 season, returning to play in the final games after our relegation fate had been sealed. After leaving SJP, Carr played on for Carlisle with later moves to Darlington and Hartlepool before a brief non-contract spell at the smoggies saw him fail to play a game. His final games came for Blyth Spartans and Bedlington Terriers, while he also appeared for the England Police XI after joining the Northumbria force.
1974 Carlos Daniel Cordone born Buenos Aires, Argentina (2000-01). Striker who arrived from Racing Club in his native Argentina in a £500K one-season loan deal. Cordone moved to SJP shortly after fellow countryman Bassedas and started well in pre season, scoring at DC United on the US tour. Drawing a blank in an opening day defeat at Old Trafford, "The Wolfman" netted in his next two games, at home to Derby & Spurs - after having had an operation to remove his soldered-in earrings (at the FA's insistence). However he faded badly after that and his flowing locks were seen less and less as the season progressed, just one more goal coming his way - in the League Cup. Cordone's final competitive appearance came in the 1-1 "Andy O'Brien" game at the mackems, before he bowed out with two goals in a testimonal game at West Brom in early May 2001. Thereafter he returned to his home country and Racing, later moves taking him on to San Lorenzo, Argentino de Merlo & Independiente Rivadavia. That wasn't quite the end of the story however, with English newspapers picking up on several lurid tales of positive drugs tests and one of possession of a firearm whilst travelling to watch his favourite team, Alem.

2006 Some mystical words of 'wisdom' from Chairman Freddy Shepherd following the disastrous home defeat by Sheffield United.
"I don't get upset by the protests."
"I love all the supporters because I'm one of them and don't have any problem with Geordies. If things were different I might be with them calling out about someone else.
"I've got to do what's best for the business, not me, and if a Geordie Abramovich knocked on the door we'd have to do business.
"I'd gladly do whatever to secure him but I don't want to lead supporters up a cul-de-sac because there's no-one there.
"I will not walk out on the business. I've made mistakes but so has everyone in football. I am from Byker and I used to fight my way into school and fight my way out again.
"The biggest criticism is I've been too kind to managers with funds and too generous to players but we have the weather and we are competing with Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester United and we are 300 miles from London.
"We're on the verge of the Roman Empire, which is why they built the wall."
2007

Llambias claims that this "branding" is designed to be an extension of the current Gallowgate End roof advert and will appear elsewhere round SJP as a "showcase" to prospective sponsors for the 2010/11 season. Presumably Ashley's company plug will remain in place if nobody is daft enough to buy the rights - while the club will doubtless hope that this 'dry run' will get fans used to the concept in the hope that they will be more accepting of the real thing. For anyone unable/unwilling to listen to the audio, we've transcribed the BBC interviewIn a nutshell - on the field: unspecified small amount available for squad strengthening but as likely to be loans as purchases; we will spend the renaming money (if we sell it) on the squad; Hughton as popular in the dressing room as he is the boardroom. In a nutshell - off the field: SJP to remain part of branding - renaming a misleading term; please stop shouting nasty things about us and support the team; you will appreciate us and our efforts one day, not same enjoyment now - preferred attending games with family (quite how that last statement squares with streaking across the SJP pitch is unclear....)No explicit mention of: Tribunals, Kevin Keegan, Dennis Wise, Keith Harris, Barry Moat, attempts to sell the club, JFK.
“We are looking at it now, at this moment we are looking at players he has given us the names of. If he wants a player, we ask for the name and the position and then we will try to sign them. At the moment, in our present circumstances, we would prefer that to be loan signings.
InternationalsAndy's Wembley date Newcastle striker Andy Carroll has been named by coach Stuart Pearce in the England U21 squad for an upcoming European Championship Qualifier against Portugal The 20 year-old Tynesider has two goals from as many previous callups at this level and should get the chance to add to that tally at Wembley Stadium on Saturday week. Andy and England then decamp to Vilnius for a further qualifying game against Lithuania on November 17th. Carroll's Magpie colleague Geremi meanwhile is in the Cameroon squad for their vital World Cup Qualifier in Morocco on Saturday week. Fellow Magpie Brad Inman has been named in the Scotland U19 side for a friendly international against Germany in Paderborn on November 18th. Compo Painting giveaway

Known as 'Sandy', Newcastle acquired the future Scottish international forward from his hometown club and he would go on to win Championship and FA Cup medals at SJP.
Returning to Kilmarnock after leaving United, Sandy came back to England and played for both Nottingham Forest and Norwich City - also serving as player-manager of local side Jarrow for a time.
After a stint coaching Swiss side Berne, he settled on Tyneside and opened a Grocers shop in Byker - also working as a publican in the city. He passed away in March 1939.A Dutch U21 international and captain, left winger Frans came to Tyneside from NEC Nijmegen but only arrived at SJP after a brief trial with Oldham Athletic.
Appearing in a pre-season home friendly against Leeds United while also on trial, a deal was done in time for Frans to made his debut in a 2-0 loss at Sheffield Wednesday.
The only goal of his time in toon then came in his fourth league outing - in a 2-1 home success over Luton Town.
By then though manager Bill McGarry had exited and Joe Harvey was in temporary charge, before handing over to the incoming new boss, Arthur Cox.
A knee injury didn't help Koenen's chances of remaining at SJP and following the emergence of Chris Waddle, he ended his first season in England by being granted a free transfer.
Returning to the Netherlands with Vitesse Arnhem via a spell in Belgium, he later played for and managed the GVVV in Veenendaal.
Frans also had spells in charge of amateur sides ARC, Bataven Germania and VV Rood Wit before returning to coach GVVV in 2008.
Left winger who marked his 18th birthday by scoring twice for United in a 6-2 win over New Hartley in the FA Youth Cup.
Within weeks he'd broken through to the first team, scoring twice at SJP in a reserve win over Bolton, returning there the following week for his senior debut in a 1-0 victory over Cambridge United.
In retrospect, Gary's chances at United took a nosedive when Arthur Cox took over in 1980 and a certain left winger named Chris Waddle came to prominence.
Gary joined Mansfield Town in a £25K transfer at the start of the 1981/82 season and later appeared for both York City & Halifax Town.
Moving into non-league with Blyth Spartans in 1987, he also played for Whitley Bay, North Shields, Guiseley, Gateshead, RTM Newcastle and Lemington Labour Club.
Stott (9), Gordon 2, Bradshaw, DickAhead thanks to an early Jimmy Stott free kick, United's Willie Thompson quickly levelled from close range. Liverpool then pulled ahead and both Thomas Bradshaw and Douglas Dick marked their home debuts by scoring their first goals.
A crowd of 9,408 saw United thump Hull City 7-0 at SJP in a wartime game. Charlie Wayman, Charlie Woollett, Albert Stubbins and Jimmy Gordon (2) netted, with the other two goals coming courtesy of Arsenal's Eddie Carr, guesting for United.
After scoring a hat-trick at home to Blackpool the previous Saturday, George Robledo repeated the feat at Anfield - eclipsing the efforts of former SJP favourite Albert Stubbins.A Wednesday afternoon KO @ SJP saw 15,360 fans witness an FA XI beating their British Army counterparts 3-1. Mel Charles (brother of John) opened the scoring on 70 minutes for the Army - who were the nominal home side. FA captain Jackie Milburn then struck on 79 & 80 minutes, before Burnley's Bill Holden made it 3-1 to the FA a minute later. Future Magpie Stan Anderson also appeared for the FA.
United striker Ivor Allchurch appeared for Wales as they drew 1-1 with Scotland.
After scoring18 times in their previous four games, United's form in front of goal deserted them against the Canaries. Defender George Heslop played his final United game. That same day, United's reserves had no such problems, winning 3-2 at Blackpool thanks to goals from Len White (2) and Ken Hale.
Two ahead at half time, a strong response from the Foxes ultimately made this a good point for United. Jackie Sinclair scored for City and was in the United side by the time Leicester came to SJP in April 1968.An unforgettable place for Ian Mitchell to make his bow, on a bumpy pitch in the Hungarian town of Pecs. After levelling the tie on aggregate and holding on through extra time, the Magyars triumphed in a penalty shootout. Pecsi scored their last two and volunteers Frank Clark and Iam McFaul did likewise.
The second of three meetings with the Baggies in a fortnight saw Malcolm Macdonald return to the side after a five match injury absence.
Rovers youngster (and future Magpie) Martin Thomas made two decent stops to deny Colin Suggett, before Paul Randall sealed a home victory with his second of the game in the last minute.
The end of Alan Comfort's career, as the former Orient winger sustained a leg injury in a tackle in front of the visitors' dugout and never played again. To make matters worse, the incident took place yards away from where a group of O's fans were sat, having wisely avoided going to Ayresome Park to see their former hero.
After three defeats in a week (one in the League Cup), the Magpies returned to winning ways on an incident-filled night at St.Andrews. Tommy Wright was unable to continue for United after the break and in these pre-sub GK days, his place was taken by Kevin Brock. The midfielder somehow kept a clean sheet despite taking a kick in the head from David Speedie early on - continuing with regular doses of smelling salts to keep him awake. Former Chairman Stan Seymour was later confirmed to have passed away at the team hotel later that night, at the age of 76.
England boss Terry Venables had just taken his seat when Les Ferdinand threw himself at a Keith Gillespie cross to beat David James in the Gallowgate goal and put United ahead.Future Magpie Ian Rush levelled for the Reds but Steve Watson scored the winner after "calamity" James fumbled a Rob Lee effort.
UEFA Cup 2nd Round 2nd Leg (won 5-2 on agg) The Swiss levelled the tie when Jamarauli pumped over a cross that crept past Steve Harper, with South African striker Shaun Bartlett causing a nuisance.Having broken his Newcastle duck in the first leg, Croatian misfit Silvio Maric struck again to restore our lead from point-blank range.
Nobby Solano then provided the bullets for Duncan Ferguson and Gary Speed to fire and a place in the third round was assured.
Town boss George Burley may have moaned about the foul on Mark Venus that led to the winner from the penalty spot, but TV replays supported referee Alan Wiley's verdict - even if he failed to send off the offender, who looked to be the last man back.Geremi featured for Steve McClaren's mob and got two efforts on target that Shay Given did well to keep out. Ahead when Shola drove home at the second attempt after the ball bounced back off Gareth Southgate, referee Graham Barber then ruled out what would have been Shearer's 100th United goal for a dubious earlier infringement. The clincher came from Steve Caldwell, making his first senior start since March 2001 and his "fifth choice defender", as Bobby Robson admitted in the post-match press conference. To add to the hilarity, smoggie Frank Queudrue was then red-carded in the final seconds, playing his first game since returning from a ban... after being red-carded.
The prospect of live coverage on ITV2 saw the crowd dip by 3,000 from the previous home tie, against Hapoel Bnei Sakhnin. Those who did show up were rewarded with Shearer's 22nd European goal for the club (and 182nd in all competitions). Strike partner Bellamy then latched on to Laurent Robert's pass to settle the matter after half time.
The roller-coaster ride of supporting this club became ridiculous when the high of Palermo was followed swiftly by one of the lowest lows in the club's history, less than 48 hours later.
Losing at home to a side without a win or even an away goal all season to leave us second bottom of the Premiership was beyond belief. The false economy of taking a few hundred grand while risking the club's top flight status was a gamble that was never worth taking.
Pocketing TV money for this Saturday night game also backfired on the club, as post -match protests outside SJP for the first time included anti-Shepherd shouts - something which was ultimately to precipitate a blame- shifting exercise on to boss Glenn Roeder. And on the pitch, negative reaction from the stands was met with sarcastic applause from both Scott Parker and Stephen Carr - starting the downturn in the latter's fortunes that was to see him seek a return to the South East.
But after drawing level thanks to Andy Carroll's firm header from a Sebastien Bassong cross on 48 minutes, they then proceeded to waste opportunities of their own.

y - latest quotes Llambias utterances as reproduced by The Journal"The money that Mike put in last week (£20M) was to cover costs like wages and so on because we wanted to keep the core of a squad together which would have the best possible chance of being able to get us promoted this season.
“It has not been put aside for transfers. However, we have had a meeting with Chris last week and we have told him we will do whatever we can whenever he needs it.
“We are looking at it now, at this moment we are looking at players he has given us the names of.
“If he wants a player, we ask for the name and the position and then we will try to sign them. At the moment, in our present circumstances, we would prefer that to be loan signings.
"However, in January, when the transfer window opens, if Chris sees a player he wants to buy for a million quid or so we will go out and get him for the team.
"We are particularly interested in player under the age of 22 because we have always had an idea of building something for the future as well as the present. We are currently talking to two 16 year-olds from Ireland who we are going to sign for our Academy (one of whom is presumably Dundalk defender Nathan Murphy).
“But there will be money invested inthe team because the most important thing is getting us up – and if Chris feels the team is short in a particular area, we want to be able to do something about it for him.
“I know we are unpopular and I know a lot of fans don’t like us, but all we want to do is give the club the best possible chance to get back into the Premier League for next season.
“That is in everybody’s interests and we would urge supporters to get behind the team. There is a lot of negativity surrounding the club and there has been for a long time.
“But the most important thing is the team and helping that team get promoted. Promotion is by far and away the most important thing this season and we should all be focused on that goal. When we have achieved that and this team is back in the right division we will focus our energy on making sure we have a team which can keep us there.”

No Messiah - but a sign
Derek Llambias quotes, Tuesday afternoon:"We are just basically looking to explore and maximise our revenues. We have a great opportunity at the moment because our sponsorships are coming to an end - a kit sponsor, shirt sponsor and then we have stadium rights sponsor.
"Our intention is to put a package together that would include, for instance for the stadium rights, a jumbo screen included in that sponsorship which is great for the fans as well.
"Our intention is to have whoever the sponsor is - say SportsDirect.com @ St James' Park. We are never going to lose St James' Park, it is always going to be @St James' Park.
"So at the moment the Gallowgate has already got SportsDirect.com. We would like to follow that through and take it for the rest of the season as a showcase to whoever is out there who would like to buy the package as SportsDirect.com @ St James' Park.
"Of course (we understand fan fears), we know the history, an incredible history, an incredible passion with the fans. There's an ownership to it, we understand St James' Park, the history is just wonderful.
"We are not trying to take that away, we are just trying to add something to the revenue status of our club."So, does that actually mean that SJP has already been renamed for the rest of the season after Ashley's firm or is in the process of being renamed? As we've said before, we fail to see which business would pay to be associated with this bunch, @ or no @? And as for this latest "update" from SJP, let's recall the club's own phrase from the recent Kevin Keegan tribunal judgment:"nothing more than an exercise in public relations." in response to various emails asking where the jumbo screen at the ground would be situated - we don't know.

Tuesday saw Newcastle's reserve side compensate for a lack of league fixtures for a second successive week, by playing a behind closed doors fixture. Behind to a 34th Nathan Porritt shot at Boro's Hurworth training ground, the Magpies levelled just two minutes after the restart when beat Danny Coyne in the home goal with a close-range header. Coyne then thwarted Ryan Donaldson as United pressed forward in search of a winner. SJP renaming row reaches WestminsterDavid Clelland, Parliamentary MP for the Tyne Bridge constituency has tabled the following early day motion in The House of Commons:
That this House regrets the intention of the current owners of Newcastle United Football Club to consider renaming St James' Park, an integral part of the City of Newcastle and Tyneside since 1892* and renowned throughout the world of football and beyond as symbolic of the game, and of the loyalty of its supporters to their club; and calls on the club's owners to reconsider or ensure that whatever sponsorship deals they may seek, the name St James' Park lives on in football and in Newcastle. although Newcastle United played home games there from that date, St.James' Park was first used as a venue for matches back in 1880).protesting against Mike Ashley's recently -announced plans to sell off the naming rights to SJP. Harper makes it a happy Monday Sheffield United 0 Newcastle 1
Newcastle returned to the top of the Championship with a battling display at Bramall Lane but their saviour was 'keeper Steve Harper who pulled off three late saves to secure the three points. Ryan Taylor's 54th minute strike, that flew in via a heavy deflection, proved to be the vital moment in a game of few clear chances but deep into added time, Harper's instinctive stop to deny Darius Henderson was just as crucial. A full-blooded, and at times niggly, encounter got off to a rapid start and Henderson should have done better but screwed his effort wide of Harper's upright after springing the offside trap. At the other end Andy Carroll had three attempts blocked and then Taylor volleyed a tame effort at the 'keeper after Kevin Nolan had picked him out from the right. Keith Treacy fired over the bar for the Blades and Carroll went close with a header as he and Chris Morgan tussled for the ball. Morgan, Carroll and Taylor were all booked by card-happy referee Kevin Friend while at the other end Henderson and Fabricio Coloccini were both lucky to get away with petulant kicks at each other. Having survived the first 45 minutes, Chris Hughton's side started to assert themselves and Nolan's curler almost beat Ian Bennett before Carroll hit the post with a fine header at the start of the second half. But within minutes the deadlock was finally broken when Nolan's heavy challenge won the ball from Kyle Walker and Taylor picked up possession before thumping a shot that hit Morgan and left the former Magpie 'keeper stranded. Jordan Stewart headed over for the home side when well placed and despite bringing on Nile Ranger and Marlon Harewood to join Carroll in a towering front three, Newcastle were under the cosh in the later stages. Harper blocked a close range effort and then saved with his legs before superbly diverting Henderson's late header round the post with his left arm. The win takes us two points clear of West Brom and three ahead of Cardiff and Leicester and with three of our next four games at SJP, we have another good opportunity to cement that top spot.

A minute's applause was observed before kick-off at Bramall Lane on Monday evening to remember former Blade and ex-Magpie, Keith Kettleborough, who passed away on the morning of the game, at the age of 74. The midfielder played for both clubs in the 1960s, joining Newcastle from Sheffield United for £22,500 in what was then regarded as a shrewd move by manager Joe Harvey. Keith helped the Magpies steer clear of relegation from the First Division and played 33 times before moving on to Doncaster Rovers as player/manager. He also appeared for both Chesterfield and Matlock Town and in later life was on the staff of a Public School in the Sheffield area.

His fellow Geordies were slightly less happy, with Lee Clark submitting a transfer request, an injured Alan Shearer watching from the sidelinesand smoggies boss Bryan Robson labelling David Ginola a cheat for diving. As if. 2001 The few hardy supporters who watched United's U17 side in action at Bullocksteads were rewarded for their commitment with a 5-1 win over Coventry City. Craig Bellamy's brace wasn't bad either, with the Welsh forward supplying a stunning volley to open the scoring against John Gregory's side. He then rounded things off nicely by outpacing the Villa defence and threading the ball through the advancing Schmeichel's legs. Olivier Bernard made his first team debut for United as a late substitute for fellow countryman Laurent Robert.

As part of a Premier League initiative aimed at improving understanding of disability, United defender Claudio Cacapa had spent the day before the game blindfolded - unfortunately he still seemed to be similarly afflicted as he failed to prevent the visitors' second and third strikes.... Michael Owen's shot was deflected in by Sol Campbell to reduce the arrears, but Newcastle failed to mount a convincing fightback and a Steven Taylor rick for Pompey's fourth cemented a first victory on Tyneside for them since 1949. The petition is hosted by the Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) but anyone opposed to the plan is welcome to add their name - not just NUST members. (shop on St.Andrews Street are also collecting signatures from disgruntled fans on their own anti-naming petition). 1919 Death of Bobby Templeton, 40.(1903-04)
A victim of the nationwide influenza epidemic.
1965 Neil Raymond McDonald born, Willington Quay. (1982-88)
Right back/midfielder who made his name at Wallsend Boys Club but signed for Carlisle as a 14 year-old with Newcastle supposedly having dithered over concluding a deal. Bob Moncur was his first boss at Brunton Park, but following his departure for Hearts and replacement by Bob Stokoe, the young McDonald felt his chances of advancement from the youth team were much reduced. An approach from Newcastle at that point saw the 16 year-old return across the A69 after a tribunal agreed a £50K compensation. A first team debut for United quicky followed, at home to Barnsley in September 1982 and McDonald become a regular choice, also being recognised by England U21s. A £525K move to Everton came in 1988, with his competitive debut for the Toffees coming in a 4-0 home win over Newcastle. Further moves later took him on to Oldham, Bolton and Preston - although injury blighted his career after leaving Boundary Park. A move into coaching came at Deepdale as his playing career wound down in 1998. Two year on and he returned to Bolton under Sam Allardyce, later becoming reserve team boss. After five years on the staff at the Reebok, McDonald made a switch to Crystal Palace in 2005 as Iain Dowie's number two - having met his new gaffer when the pair were on the UEFA Pro Licence course in 2004.
His next role was as boss of Carlisle, but his sacking after the first game of his second season remains an unexplained decision. A short stint as manager of Östersunds FK in Sweden then saw him successfully steer the side clear of relegation, returning to England to become assistant to former Magpie colleague Peter Jackson at Lincoln City. Within four months though McDonald had been tempted away from Sincil Bank to become first team coach at Leeds United. He's now teamed back up with Allardyce at Ewood Park as part of the Blackburn Rovers backroom staff.
1989 Paul Farman born, North Shields.(2007)
Goalkeeper who joined United on a short -term basis in late 2007, playing four games for the U18s during an injury crisis. After trials with MK Dons, Boston United and Gateshead, Paul signed for Blyth Spartans and broke into the first team during their FA Cup run in 2008, making his debut at Buxton. Moving on to Gateshead in the summer of 2009, he marked his first league outing for the Tynesiders with a clean sheet against Rushden and Diamonds.

However, he made no reference to becoming a fifth-rate TV anchorman.... 2003 Another entry for the Sir Bobby Robson quotes book: in the aftermath of a home game Aston Villa the previous day, the then -Newcastle boss commented:
"We've just lost a match we should have just won, but there's nothing wrong with our football, nothing wrong with our enthusiasm, nothing wrong with our commitment, we're just missing chances."The final score? 1-1.
2006 Palermo (a) UEFA Cup Group Stage Game 2Luque(37) 16,904In the midst of a shocking season the biggest shock of all came in Sicily when an under strength United beat the Serie A joint leaders on their own ground.
Albert Luque scored the goal, but our hero was undoubtedly 18-year old debutant keeper Tim Krul, who made a number of outstanding saves to keep a memorable clean sheet.
Although the Italians missed a few decent chances, it was a remarkable result and another makeshift defence shut out the free-scoring home side to make qualification from the group stages a near certainty.
The goal was a memorable header for our Spanish flop but in truth, the quality of the cross from Milner was such that even Luque couldn't miss.

Al Jazeera Sport +5 Fox Sports 1 (Australia) Setanta USA (delay) Viasat Football (Nor) InterviewSmith: happy among the 'muck and nettles'
Ahead of Monday night's visit to Bramall Lane, Newcastle's Alan Smith spoke to The Times
“I know I'll never be able to get back to as good as I was in terms of that two to five per cent that takes you to the very top - international level, Champions League level.
“My injury will restrict me from competing at the very highest level. As soon as I did my injury I knew that. I spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson about it and we both knew that it would be difficult to play at that standard, week in week out.
“I am an honest person, I know that I'm not as good as I was, simple as that. There is certain stuff that I'm restricted with when I'm playing, like movement - I don’t play as freely as I used to. But I can still make tackles and I'm lucky to still be playing. I am happy just to play. I love playing in this position and I think I could still do it in the Premier League.
“But for the real pinnacle of international and Champions League football, then that two per cent is massive. It wasn't hard to come to terms with. I take everything as I go. I've never stopped trying to get back to that level. But I know deep down that it would be very difficult for me.
“Having said that, I have enjoyed this season as much as any in my career. It's been a breath of fresh air, I love the challenge in this division. At the end of the season, we want to lift that Championship trophy, that would be a massive achievement. If we do that I will be a happy man.
“I've missed so many games, but I can catch up this season, if we have a decent cup run as well. When you've been through something where you realise you might never play ever again, every game is a bonus. Playing at Anfield that day could have been my last game. So I enjoy every day.
“The hardest thing at the start of the season was knowing which players wanted to stay. We came back in the summer and no-one knew what was going on in terms of would players be sold.
"Certain players were making it clear they wanted to leave but the club said no-one was going to be sold. That was the most difficult time. We went to Leyton Orient and it was a disaster. But I think what came out of it was that everything came to a head.
“It was clear that five or six of the players wanted to leave which was fair enough. We had a meeting when we came back from the game - just us players. We said ‘whoever wants to leave they can leave and we'll help them to go. Whoever want to stay then commit yourself to stay’. That was a massive turning point. In a way, getting that bad result was the best thing that could have happened. It was screaming out what needed to happen.
“The lads who wanted to leave, left and the rest of us stayed. It wasn't just me who called the meeting, it was decided amongst us because it was that obvious to see what needed to be done. it was just a case of ‘lets do it’, a team thing. It was one of the strangest things ever. We were managing ourselves. Fair play to them, a few lads stood up and said 'I want to go' for whatever reason, to play Premier League football and the like. You can't hold people back.
“Chris knew that we were having that meeting and he stood back and let us sort things out. There was never a chance that I would be one of the ones asking to go. I needed to play regular football. That's what I've missed for the last three seasons. You just want to play. I was 29 on Wednesday so I can't afford to miss any more games. I never feel any twinge of regret when I see the likes of Damien Duff playing in the Premier. I wanted to stay.
“The Championship is more muck and nettles. It's Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday. You go to grounds where as a kid I used to watch football. The Premier League is this massive, world-wide thing, it's unbelievable, But this division has something special as well. We are seeing how difficult it is. We're going to places where everyone in the world expects you to win and sometimes you get beat. That's the beauty of it.
“In a way we are the Man United of this division, in that everyone wants to beat us. The Newcastle fans travel with us in unbelievable numbers - we had 5,500 at Nottingham Forest, which is incredible. Everywhere we go it seems like a special occasion, a big game.
“It is difficult every week when the other team runs that little bit further, tries that bit harder. It's going to be a long road but it will be good fun. This season has been very enjoyable. The camaraderie is great. Last year there was a big divide between players, fans and football club. This season you can see a togetherness.
“There is the old cliché that they (the fans) pay their money so they can say what they want and I believe that. It is up to them if they chant this or that about the board. They support us so you can't say they're fickle. To get 44,000 against Doncaster Rovers was incredible, the highest attendance in the country.
“That tells you how passionate they are. They've helped us so much this season by getting behind us. I think they've enjoyed it as much as we have. There will be ups and downs. If you go Scunthorpe United, take 3,500 and get beaten you don't deserve a good reception. As a fan you want a team* you can be proud of every week, win, lose or draw.”*call us greedy, but club would be nice - one day.Inman's the man After a fixture-free weekend, Newcastle's U18s returned to league action on Saturday afternoon, as they successfully extended their unbeaten run to six games. After a quiet start, a long, hanging ball from United's Shane Ferguson in the seventh minute was knocked down and Sam Adjei mis-hit a volley that was saved by Cuff. Four minutes later Phil Airey beat a man on the edge of the area but his shot was blocked by a great recovering challenge before Airey flashed a 25-yard drive just wide. At the other end, United 'keeper Jak Alnwick was equal to a long distance effort and then Adjei's back post header from a Michael McCrudden cross was well saved. The visitors went ahead on 28 minutes, when a free-kick from the left was swung across the box by James Cottingham and beat Alnwick in at the far post.It took just minutes for Newcastle to reply however, when Adjei was fouled and McCrudden's free-kick was flicked into the far corner by to level. And four minutes before the break, Brad Inman registered his fourth goal of the campaign with a fine 25-yard shot flew past the 'keeper's right hand to give Newcastle the lead at half-time. The young Magpies continued to dominate after the break and Phil Airey came close to increasing their lead just after the hour mark after Conor Newton nodded on a goal kick. After 71 minutes Inman robbed Wednesday's centre back and played it to Ferguson who found Adjei but his tame header was easily saved. Airey then played a fine one-two with Inman on the edge of the area but the 'keeper came off his line to block a volley with his legs. Airey was lucky only to be booked for a high two-footed challenge and both sides had late chances to score but Alnwick saved well and Airey only just failed to get on the end of a Spear cross at the other end.

Updates on planned protests at the Peterborough United home game on Saturday will appear here. PPS: One of our readers asked whether Nexus would auction off naming rights to the St.James Metro station. They responded on Friday as follows:Nexus can today confirm we would not seek to change the name of St James Metro station, regardless of any plans by Newcastle Utd to rename St James Park football ground.Meanwhile, David Faulkner, the Deputy Leader of Newcastle City Councilprovided thefollowing response:Whilst we understand the need to maximise sponsorship income, somethings are more important than money. The name St James' Park issynonymous with Newcastle United Football Club, has been for over 100years, and absolutely must stay. On the legal/property aspects, the lease of St James Park was granted toNewcastle United Football Company Ltd by the City Council for a term of99 years beginning on 16th July 1998. Such long leases effectively meanthat the balance of power rests with the tenant not the landlord. There is no covenant in the lease prohibiting a change of name of thestadium or ground. The tenant can't erect new buildings without priorlandlord's consent but there is no prohibition on change of signage. Therefore, as ground landlord our view is thatunfortunately the Councilcould not prevent a change of name of the ground. I imagine what ishappening now was never thought of at the time the lease was agreed. Please also note that St James Park is a Town Moor "Intake" (that is,part of the Town Moor) andtherefore all the ground rent is received bythe Freemen not the Council. There was another win bonus for the Magpies reserve 'keeper on Saturday, as Norwich City recorded a 3-1 away win at Stockport County - a club where Fraser spent part of last season on loan. Among the home side on Saturday was a former Magpie colleague of Forster - defender Paul Huntington, who is currently on loan at Edgeley Park from Leeds United.

Previous to his time on Tyneisde, Money had been the manager of both Scunthorpe United and Walsall - in addition to coaching roles in Sweden and Australia.
His Town tenure didn't get off to a great start however, losing 2-0 at Kenilworth Road to Rushden & Diamonds, a defeat that left Luton fifth in the Blue Square Premier. Money is the third successive Hatters boss to have had Magpies connections, following on from former playing duo Mick HarfordAlan Neilson. The latter continued in his caretaker managerial role on Saturday and is tipped to remain as Money's assistant. Bees spoil Sunday plan This coming weekend sees local non-leaguers face league opposition in the , with the visit of to the International Stadium. That tie is now confirmed as a 3pm kickoff on Saturday, November 7th - which unfortunately clashes with the visit of Peterborough United to SJP in the Championship. Dodgin took charge of non-league Yeovil Town in the summer of 1957, but left before the season started, after being poached by Barrow (at the time a Football League side). His final club was Oldham Athletic, where he took charge between 1958 and 1960. Norman passed away in 2000.
Left winger who arrived from Raith Rovers as an understudy to Bobby Mitchell, making his debut in a 1-0 home victory over Derby County in November 1952. A lack of first team opportunities however saw him join Stirling Albion and he also played for Fraserburgh. George died in 1995.
The Dashing Dane was signed from Scottish side Greenock Morton, which allowed United to get round the ban on signing overseas players who hadn't lived in the UK and planned to remain there (marrying a Scottish lass also helped his cause).
The midfielder known as "Benny" netted against Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City but it was his Fairs Cup Final goal in Budapest that placed him in United folklore. After that success, Benny remained in toon and appeared in our European campaigns in the following two seasons before joining Blackburn Rovers. 2009 saw him return to Tyneside for the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Fairs Cup triumph, making the journey by sea due to an aversion to flying.
Signed by Bobby Robson from Wimbledon for £7m, Cort had debuted for Wombles at SJP in 1997 - scoring within two minutes of kickoff. That breakthrough came after he'd been farmed out on loan to Lincoln City, returning to score goals for the Dons and secure an England U21 place. To general relief, Cort made a £2m switch to Wolves in January 2004, but Robson reacted with fury when press reports called the striker a waste of money:"I wish him well. I bought Carl Cort, I'll stand up for my judgment on Carl Cort, and I hope Carl Cort, if he goes, I hope he does really well.
"When we bought him, we thought 'what a player we've got here'. We were delighted with him, and then sadly, he's just had a terrible time."
Carl was transformed into a Molineux goal hero, at one time netting 30 times in 70 appearances for his new club Wolves.
That stay was again blighted by hamstring injuries though and he left within months, belatedly reappearing on trial at Norwich City in the final weeks of 2008. A short-term deal with the Canaries saw him net once in a dozen outings, before leaving Carrow Road in the close season. Appearing on trial in pre-season at Peter Taylor's Wycombe Wanderers, Cort then signed a permanent deal with Brentford.
Debut for George Brander on his 23rd birthday, in place of the injured Bobby Mitchell.
Only 'keeper Jimmy Rimmer saved the Gunners from a heavier defeat. Arthur Cox's side bounced back from a 0-6 savaging at Chelsea in their previous game, as rookie trio of Chris Withe, Chris Waddle and Bruce Halliday were left out. There was a winning debut for left back Peter Johnson, who played what his probably his best game for the club. All remembered
Former and future Magpie midfielders were in the visiting lineup, in the shape of John Trewick and Kevin Brock. Newcastle's Andy Thomas completed the Manor Ground connection as Peter Jackson helped keep a clean sheet on his home debut.
A resounding midweek victory against a Baggies side, for whom a certain Sam Allardyce made the only (substitute) appearance of his brief time on the books at the Hawthorns.
Scandalously, the peaceful post-match pitch invasion by home fans was reported as a riot involving Toon fans by - total lies. Barnes(pen,4) Tomasson(45), Beresford(90)Jon Dahl Tomasson finally got off the mark as he made his 12th start for United, but few inside SJP were aware of that until half time PA confirmation. The Danish youngster was leading the attack in the absence of Alan Shearer, Tino Asprilla, Ian Rush and Keith Gillespie. That decision appeared to have come from within the dressing room and looked to be harsh on Tomasson's Toon colleague Des Hamilton, whose effort was goalbound.John Beresford missed a great late chance to level before blasting home to make it 3-3 in the final seconds. And there was still time for Emile Heskey to be dismissed by referee Gary Willard after clashing with Philippe Albert.
Young central defender Steve Caldwell made his home debut after Aaron Hughes pulled out through illness. And after being involved in all three of the Bantams' goals, the Scottish U21 international popped up to whack home a centre from Daniel Cordone to put United into the last sixteen.
The highlight of this game for many was the 70th minute dismissal of Gavin McCann, to the accompaniment of 50,000 voices signing "sad mackem basket"....or something similar.
Peter Ramage finally ended our reserve goal famine after 443minutes, when heading home against Leeds at Kingston Park. Substitute Marc Walton then sealed a first victory in six games - despite strong Leeds protests that the ball hadn't crossed the line. Midfielder Michael McCrudden's fifth goal of the season made it four successive wins for the U18s, as they beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 to maintain their position as league leaders.
