Bird Watching at Burr Oak November 9 - 8:30am-10:00am Join Missouri Master Naturalist, Sara Scheil for Burr Oak Woodsâ monthly bird hike. All levels of birders are welcome. The group will meet at the nature center and hike a favorite route. We will identify local birds both visually and by song. Please call 816.228.3766 to register. Fall Foliage Day Hike at the Hollis Center November 1 - 1pm The Hollis Center is a private retreat with a 5-mile trail system, shelters, picnic areas, overnight and meeting facilities. If you have never visited their private setting, this is your opportunity. The natural trails meander wooded areas and cross streams and ridges. As there are some inclines, hiking boots are appropriate. Please bring $3 to hike the property. Directions: From Interstate 70, take the 110th exit (Exit 410) and travel south on 110th. Turn west (right) on Kansas Ave by the fire station and watch for the little brown Hollis sign. Turn right at the fork and proceed down the hill. The road ends at Hollis. Nelson Island / Wilder Access Weekday Walk--CANCEL IN CASE OF RAIN This section of the Mill Creek Streamway trail offers views of the Kansas River and is often good for bird-watching. Expect to walk 3 miles. Meet at the Wilder Road access. From I-435, take the Holiday Drive exit on the south side of the Kansas River and go west to the access parking just over the railroad tracks. Cancel in case of rain.
Remembering Tim GabischOctober 17 - 2 to 4pm Friends will gather to remember long-time club member and leader, Tim Gabisch whom we lost this summer. Kill Creek Park Trail ClearingOctober 10 and October 18 Two dates have been chosen for the autumn trail work on Kill Creek Park's hiking trails. Saturday, October 10 at 1:15 PM - park in Lot 1 and we will cover the north trails. Sunday, October 18 at 1:15 PM - park in the boat ramp lot and we will cover the south trails. Bring water and snacks if you wish. The work normally takes about three hours. I should have all the tools we will need; loppers and saw. Take K-10 west to the Kill Creek Exit. Go south on Kill Creek, west on 115th, south on Homestead. As it is fairly rugged, boots are suggested. We'll hike at least 3 miles. (Water is not available.) Afterward, we'll have lunch in Oak Grove. Carpool: at 10 AM from east parking lot at the Clarion Hotel (Blue Ridge Cut Off.) Directions: Take I-70 to the Grain Valley exit and go south on Buckner Tarsney Rd. about a mile to RD Mize Rd. Turn east on RD Mize and go about .5-mile to the entrance on the left side of the road. The walk is a 10K event officially sanctioned by the American Volkssporting Association (AVA). Start point will be the lobby of the All Souls Unitarian-Universalist Church, 4501 Walnut, Kansas City, MO. The church is located one block off of Main across from the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Please arrive early to register for the walk. Most of the walk will be centered in the Country Plaza area, which is a virtual outdoor museum of Spanish architecture and European art. Walkers will enjoy the Christmas lights which should be lighted toward the end of the walk. The walk will also go through Westport, the Art Institute, and past the Kaufman Gardens. This group walk will be held in conjunction with the walk sponsored by the Clay-Platte Trackers of Kansas City. Morning Hike at Prairie Center, OlatheSeptember 27 - 10:30am We'll meet at the parking lot on the EAST SIDE OF THE PARK. We'll hike for a few hours then eat lunch at Fred P. Otts in Olathe. The Prairie Center is a 300-acre tallgrass prairie reserve located at 26325 W. 135th Street. At the intersection of K-7 and 135th Street drive west a few miles. (It is located on the south side of 135th Street.) Turn left at S Cedar Niles Road. The parking lot is on your right. Colors should be optimum this time of year! Day Hike at Wallace State ParkSeptember 19 - 11am We'll meet at the shelter house at 11 am to hike for about two hours on a rolling grass / dirt/ wood chip trail. Hiking boots are suggested and a walking stick is helpful. The trail covers a variety of scenery including upland, lowland, old fields, streams and forest. Bug spray is always a good idea. Carpool: Hwy 152 and I -35; west to McDonald's parking lot by 10:20 am. Directions to the park: Take I-35 north to the Wallace State Park exit #48. Turn right on Hwy 69 and left on 121. Weekday Hike at Parkville Nature SanctuarySeptember 24 - 10am On Thursday, Kathy will lead a hike at the Parkville Nature Sanctuary in Parkville, Missouri. Waterfalls, woods, wetlands and wildlife! The hike involves a fairly steep climb and you can expect to hike about an hour and a half on natural trails. Boots are recommended. Directions: Take Hwy 9 north of the river to Parkville. Morning Hike in Lee's SummitSeptember 6 - 9:30am Join us for a nice morning hike of about 4 miles at the James A. Reed Wildlife Area in Lee's Summit. This is perhaps the best natural wildlife area in the metro. The hike will start at 9:30 am. We will use the grassy trails - all are regularly mowed so there will be little or no tallgrass that we hike through, and all flat (no hills). Bring water. Directions - Use Hwy 50 East that heads towards Lee's Summit, and you go past the Hwy 291 overpass. The next exit (Todd George/Ransom Rd) is the one to exit at. Then head south a little over a mile on that road (Ransom) and you will see the park sign on the right where you turn left (east) into the park. We will meet at the Visitors Center just down the road past Honker Pond. We'll walk down Grand to Broadway and back viewing the many new additions to our city. Wear comfortable shoes for this 1.5-hour tour past the Entertainment District, the Midland Theatre, Barttle Hall, the new Performing Arts Center and more with sculpture and art en route. Meet in the parking lot for the Discover Center at 47th & Troost. We'll walk along the Riverwalk through the plaza on a crisp fall day. The Kemper Museum, Art Institute, the Nelson and the Kauffman Gardens are all worthy highlights. Lot's of good stuff on this beautiful city route.

Hill Climbing HikeSeptember 10 - 9am This weekday hike will entail walking fairly strenuous hills on a paved trail from Midland Drive, south. Lynda will lead you back after 4 miles. Julie will continue around the loop behind Shawnee Mission Park and back - about 6 miles. Pack water and snacks for a streamside break. From I-435, head west on Shawnee Mission Parkway. Turn south at the Midland Drive Access and wind around to a hidden, but well-marked trailhead parking lot. We'll prepare and sample several entrees from breakfast to dinner items and you'll make a meal to take on your next backpacking trip. After our food preparation and sampling, we'll cap the evening with a walk on the Kansas River levee. This class is open to 9 people and the cost for food is $5. This is a 6.2 mile hike, which is sponsored by the Clay-Platte Trackers of Kansas City. Their trail masters rate the hike a 3+ and suggest both hiking sticks and hiking boots. Walkers travel on nature trails which provide beautiful views of the Missouri River and hopefully, some fall colors. The guided walk will leave at 10 AM. Please meet at the park shelter (one mile from park entrance, on left) near the Missouri River overlook prior to 10 AM. Directions to the start point: Take I-29 North to 273 Hwy and take exit 20 toward Tracy/Weston. Turn left on 273/Elm Grove Road, continue to follow 273. Turn left on 45 Hwy. to Weston Bend Park. This event is a joint effort of Heartland Tree Alliance, Kansas City WildLands and Keep Kansas City Beautiful, affiliates of Bridging The Gap, in partnership with Jackson County Parks and Recreation.
