Old China hands archive
http://library.csun.edu/OldChinaHands/
The Old China Hands Archive is a project hosted by the Oviatt Library Digital Collections, based at California State University, Northridge. The resource primarily consists of a textual introductory page, and digitised images of Tientsin (modern day Tianjin) in the late 1940s. Old China Hands is a term referring to westerners with an experiential knowledge of China, usually through long-term residence or service. Although users will not find a huge collection of photographs, those included here reveal a great deal about life in China during the turbulent Civil War years. Images cover: children; evacuation; the foreign presence in China; the elderly; and street life in Tientsin.
Users can browse the images, or search through keywords. Images are displayed in full size and thumbnail versions, along with associated keywords, which can be selected to reveal further images. However, the resource as a whole would benefit from further contextualisation of its images, or a further section on the historical background to the collection. It would be of interest to any historian of urban, Civil War China, and to those seeking images of foreign military presence in China. Added: 2009-11-17
88 Bar
http://www.88-bar.com/
The English-language blog, 88 Bar, covers observations of popular culture posted by its experienced contributors. The website is little more than a series of posts, gateways and video and image files, but provides a helpful overview of cultural currents for those living outside China. 88 Bar was created by Chinese-born graphic designer, Jason Li, and Lyn Jeffery, a research director at Institute for the Future, who has spent more than 25 years covering mainland Chinese affairs. Posts on 88 Bar cover such subjects as: internet gaming; modern art; photography; television; music; and Western attitudes towards China. However, the blog also covers current affairs, and has observations on: Chinese education; ethnic unrest; censorship; and the Chinese police.
Although not a 'scholarly' resource in the traditional sense, 88 Bar has much to offer the student of Chinese popular culture and cultural and media studies. It contains a great many gateways to similar resources of interest, and picks out phenomonen (such as web pages or YouTube excerpts) currently circulating in China. Although its vernacular may offend some, it is a valuable (albeit subjective) introduction to Chinese trends. Added: 2009-11-17

The resource would be of value to anyone with an interest in Chinese diasporas in the United Kingdom and around the world. http://www.cnr.uidaho.edu/wrc/Publications/Barnett_2004_Climber_Displacement_The
This is a thesis which assesses the extent and nature of displacement and coping of mountaineers at the Cascade volcanoes in Washington and Oregon. Displacement is described as a temporal or spatial change in recreational use of an area due to changes in setting conditions. Since management action or inaction can influence setting conditions, wilderness managers are faced with the challenge of deciding which users will be displaced at a given location, and ensuring that those displaced visitors can find the opportunities that they seek elsewhere in the region. From this Web page you may download PDF and HTML files giving introductory information about the study. The data itself is available to order from the HDS as a set of tab delimited text files, though to make use of this material you must first register with the HDS (further information and instructions are supplied). This dataset is part of a series containing information collected from poll books: it comprises a computer transcript of the Hereford poll books, to facilitate investigation of voting behaviour using nominal record linkage. Variables recorded include: name; occupation; address; vote; and generation. Added: 2009-11-16

The project is hosted by the University of Cambridge, and is the work of members of the English Faculty and Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies (CARET) at Cambridge, with contributions from school teachers and students. The resources are divided into: primary; key stage 3-4; and A-level, as well as: 'fun stuff'; teachers' resources; Chaucer resources; and an item called 'Personal Demons'. A range of topics and periods are covered, including: Chaucer/Middle English; Shakespeare; First World War poetry and propaganda; English language; and poetry. The resources are interactive, some requiring Flash and Adobe Reader, although text-only versions of many of the pages are available. The forums have now been disabled, and the live seminars are no longer running, but an archive of past seminars is available. Added: 2009-11-15
