Follow Riley Guide on Twitter!
November 19, 2009
I am working my way through the backlog of link requests, but some weeks go better than others. This week I ended up doing some much needed maintenance on various sections of the website including the Career Research Center, so only a few new things were reviewed.
For those of you on Facebook or wondering Facebook is worth your time and/or effort, I have set up a Facebook page for The Riley Guide so I can send out news or new resources as I find them. Please consider joining us!
I have also broken down and set up a Twitter account for Riley Guide if that's one of your connection points.
- Jobs for Diverse Audiences: The 50+ Workforce -- I've added 2 new sites for "boomers who want to make a change." Their words, not mind. One, WhatsNext.com, helps you find your "Career 2.0" while Encore.org encourages those of us who can call ourselves Boomers (yes, that's me too) to make a change to a career that makes a difference. These resources are actually good for anyone who is facing the "overqualified" label or who wants to make a career change at a point in life when your kids might think you've completely lost it.
- Veterans & Transitioning Personnel: DOD / Government-Sponsored Services -- added DoD Veterans: Opportunities to Use Your Abilities, a website from the DoD outlining opportunities for men and women who have honorably served the US an opportunity to continue your service as a DoD civilian employee. This sites does not offer actual job listings (you are referred to those resources), but it answers your questions about applications and Veterans Preference.
- Arts & Humanities: Music -- added a link to The Savvy Musician, a website (and book) with advice and resources to help musicians "find ways to thrive under any circumstances". I think the book would make a great holiday present for anyone considering a career in music.
- Resume Databases and Delivery Services - Deleted 1 listing
- Jobs for Diverse Audiences - Deleted 1 site which is not responding.
- Jobs in Canada - Deleted 1 site which is not responding.
- Natural Sciences - Deleted 1 site which appears to have switched to paid subscription only.
- File Unemployment Claims - Updated links to 2 state unemployment compensation services
- International Jobs- Updated the link to one site in our list.
Next Update: December 3
I am taking next week off. Well, not really, but I have got to clean the house and do some baking in advance of Thanksgiving Dinner, so I know I won't get to the website. However, if something good comes up I'll post it to Facebook and send out a Tweet, so think about joining us on either or both.New This Week

Free Job Hunt Boot Camp November 14 in Germantown MD
Just so you know....
I have reviewed everything submitted in August, so I believe I am on track to review everything submitted before November 15 by the end of 2009.The Riley Guide now has a Facebook page. My friends Susan Joyce and Bill Frank have been on me to Twitter, and Susan Ireland is an active blogger, so I am once again behind the times and running to catch up. I already use Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends, so I'm happy to add in a Riley Guide page where I can post news nuggets I hear, updates to my site, particularly useful things, and where you can post tips, share stories, or even tell me about your favorite sites and services. So please check out The Riley Guide on Facebook and become a fan!
I've also added in the AddThis widget so you can share content from this site with others.
I've also decided to take down the website and relocate all of that content into this site. I had forgotten how hard it is to create a new site from the bottom up, and I just don't have the necessary time to maintain it let alone develop it the way it should be. I'll be making that move in the next couple of weeks.
Only 2 updates and no deletions! Can you believe it!

These are paid 2-year fellowships for wounded warriors to give them experience in and exposure to public service positions.

I woke up Monday with a nasty cold, so I did not get much done this week. However, I am into the resources and sites submitted in August, so I still hope to get to everything received by November 15 before the end of the calendar year.
- Job Search Guidance: The Great Career Advisors -- added a link to Pete Weddle's blog Work Strong. This is a program for personal career management in which you pursue a personal Career Fitness Program much the same way to pursue a personal physical fitness program. As always, the advice offered is terrific and not your standard run-of-the-mill jargon.
- Executive Search Firms: Working with Recruiters & Search Firms -- added a review of How to Work with Headhunters by Nick Corcodilos (AskTheHeadhunter.com). It is a marvelous guide to the in-and-out of recruiting and how best to interact with and respond to calls from recruiters and headhunters.
- Other Meta-Guides for the Internet Job Search -- added a link to the Top 100 Job Site Niches for 2009 compiled by InternetInc.com. This isn't the Top 100 Niche Job Sites, but the top 100 field- or function-specific job searches identified by Google with an accompanying list of the top 3 or 4 sites in each field.
- Consider More Training: Seminars & Short-Term Training -- updated this heading a bit to include both short-term seminars plus education and training programs where you can earn a certificate, diploma, or award in less than 2 years, and I also listed the new Short-Term Training Finder from CareerInfoNet.org
- Certification Resources: General Info Sources -- I listed the new Short-Term Training Finder from CareerInfoNet.org in this section too.
- Networking Tips: The Art of Netiquette -- added 2 new resources here. The first is BusinessEmailEtiquette.com, a blog on this very topic authored by Judith Kallos, an expert in this field. The second is this marvelous guide to E-mail Guidelines and Etiquette in Your Job Search (and on the job, and in life generally) from the Career Services at Virginia Tech. Both are terrific.
- Cover Letters: Writing Cover Letters -- I added the "E-mail Guidelines and Etiquette in Your Job Search (and on the job, and in life generally)" from the Career Services at Virginia Tech to this spot too since it has much to say about submitting cover letters and resumes via email and even negotiations.
- Networking & Support Groups: Nationwide Listings & Organizations -- I've updated my review of the Crossroad Career Network. Since I last visited their site in 2005, they have greatly expanded their network and their online services. Right now, they are offering free online memberships to individual who are not near one of their member churches.
- Certification and Licensing Resources - updated 1 link
- Legal Issues in Employment & Hiri - updated 1 link
- Cover Letters - updated 1 link
- Jobs for Lawyers and other Legal Professionals - updated 1 link
- Other Meta-Guides for the Internet Job Search - deleted 1 listing which has not updated in a very long time and
- has several outdated resources.
- Networking and Support Groups - deleted 1 listing which is not responding
- Diversity Resources: Native Americans / Indigenous Groups and Local US Jobs: Washington -- the website for the Colville Tribes is not responding so I have deleted the listing for now and will keep checking back.
- International Jobs: British Isles: UK - deleted 1 site which has been merged into another company (I am considering the new company as a replacement). I also relocated MyJobGroups to the Regional Resources for the British Isles.

Remember to set your clocks BACK one hour this weekend!I have reviewed everything submitted to me through July 2009.
Federal Legislative Alert for Active Duty Military Personnel
On October 28, 2009, President Obama signed into law the Fiscal Year 2010 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 2647). The new law includes an expansion of the recently-enacted exigency and caregiver leave provisions for military families under the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA).
In January 2008, Congress amended the FMLA to provide:
These provisions are effective upon enactment, so spread the word!
- Exigency leave -- up to 12 weeks of leave for urgent needs related to a reservist family members (spouse, son, daughter, or parent) call to active service.
- H.R. 2647 expands the exigency leave benefits to include family members of active duty service members. Under current law, only family members of National Guard and Reservists are eligible for exigency leave.
- Caregiver leave -- up to 26 weeks of unpaid leave to an employee to care for a family member (spouse, son, daughter, parent, or next of kin) who is injured while serving on active military duty.
- H.R. 2647 expands the caregiver leave provision to include veterans who are undergoing medical treatment, recuperation or therapy for serious injury or illness that occurred any time during the five years preceding the date of treatment.

Life is good. Orchestra rehearsals begin tonight, I go on vacation in 11 days (September 29 through October 7), and just this week I received via Facebook an email from a ballet dancer from Italy who was one of my roommates my first semester in college. She went home after that first semester, so we have not seen nor heard from each other in almost 30 years. This is on top of re-connecting with many long-lost friends from high school, college, my life in Boston, people met at past conferences, and the opportunity to canoodle with family and current friends online (including nieces and nephews). I really feel blessed that people in my past have sought me out like this.If you want to "friend" me, please note that I restrict my Facebook friends to Friends, but go ahead and shoot me a message. Colleagues who would like to be "in my network" are welcome to connect with me on LinkedIn.
- Veterans & Other Military Personnel: Job Search Advice -- added 2 new listings. The first is a series of articles on what to do after you've made the decision to separate from the military, courtesy of HireCanadianMilitary.com. Yes, insert US terms for the Canadian ones, but the general advice is great. The second listing is a quick review of Job Search: Marketing Your Military Experience by David G. Henderson (Lt. Col. USMC ret.). It is a very good book on making that transition from military to civilian life work well for you. He starts before you separate but also has good advice for persons already out and in the workforce.

- Engineering: Multiple Disciplines -- added enginUity Advantage, a women-owned recruiting firm based near Seattle, WA, and conducting retained and contingency searches for engineering professionals in all fields.

I also divided the resources under UK into several groups to make the list a bit more manageable. I'm tired today. It might be allergies (ragweed, ick) or the fact that I was at my cousin's wedding last night and didn't get until late. But in any case, it feels like all of the good effects of my last vacation have completely vanished, so I'm taking another one at the end of September. I'll warn you when the time comes.
- Business & Employer Research : Business Directories & Corporate Profiles -- added a link to the Employer Locator from CareerInfoNet.org. This is licensed from InfoUSA, the same folks who sell ReferenceUSA to so many public / academic / corporate libraries. It isn't as robust a search, nor does it give you as much data on each employer, but it is still a searchable list of over 12 million potential employers in the US. And its free because your tax dollars support this site.
- International Jobs: International Agencies & NGOs -- added a link to the job opportunities with the United Nations. This page covers positions with missions all over the world, and there is a separate link here to openings with the Peace Missions. This site is also available en Français.

- Job Search Guidance: Staying Organized & Managing Your Job Search -- added a nice article titled "3 Effective Steps to Manage Your Job Search" which comes complete with downloadable Excel spreadsheets and printable PDF files you can use.

- Transportation: Logistics -- added LogJobs, with jobs for logistics professionals.
- Government Jobs in the US: Other Opportunities with Government Contractors - added a link to GovZine, "a social news aggregation service (similar to Digg) with a focus specifically on the government industry." It also aggregates opportunities in government and with government contractors.
- Job Lead Banks: J -- added JobSource.Info, a meta-indexer for jobs which has some particularly nice sorting and categorization features.
- Education & Instruction: Executive Search Firms -- added this category for search firms who specialize in higher education / academe. I moved two resources to this list and added a new one, PlacementCorp.
- Internships: Study / Non-Study Experience Abroad -- added Educations.com, offering students all around the world the opportunity to connect to educational opportunities and students around the world.
. This database is licensed from the same vendor, InfoUSA, and while it searches a little differently and displays the data a little differently, it is a very similar database. If you don't have access to ReferenceUSA, or if you only have access to a minor subset, try the
