I get to turn 34 next week. meh. This is the first birthday i haven't looked forward to since 27. I didn't look forward to that one either. I guess that this one bugs me because for the first time ever i feel that clock ticking (annoyingly because of friends and them saying "i wouldn't have a baby past 35")...anyway, made me wonder what birthdays other people dreaded or do dread? curious what other folks reasons were.

I could wax poetic about this season. The trees, the nip in the air, and the smell of chocolate from the boys Hallowe'en loot. The chocolate can handle it's own and better writers than I have already cornered the market with their descriptive powers. This season's chill brings the warmth of chili.Alright, that's just an excuse, we eat chili regardless of the season. As my oldest would say, "Chili is yum!" I set out to prepare for something, different.Over the summer we were part of a community gardening plot. This year our big harvest was pickling cucumbers, tomatillos, and peppers. Lots of Pepperocinis, Poblanos, Serrano, and Jalapeños! That, however, is for a different post. This post is about Tomatillos! The Rest</a

My lymph nodes in my neck the past couple hours have been really sore and I have a mildly sore throat. Do painful lymph nodes precede inevitable illness? Or is my body fighting something off and have a chance of recovering before I become officially infected with whatever is trying to infect me?

I have been charged with picking up some decorations for a baby shower, in a "fairy/fairie" theme. This would include door prizes, plates and napkins for a brunch, and maybe some mementos for the mom-to-be.I know of a few party supply stores (Lippmans, Party City), but I'm hoping to get everything at one stop. What is the best party supply store in Portland where I might find good baby shower stuff?

Hello all!I'm making menudo rojo (Mexican tripe soup) from a slightly different recipe this time--that is to say, I'm actually using a recipe--and it calls for marrow bones. I've called around to all the grocery stores and carnecerias--no marrow bones, and they don't know when they'll have any. Do you know a good substitution for marrow bones? I don't want to do something crazy like cook a roast to get the bone, and I don't want to add anything that will change the flavor of the dish. What do you think? Is there a suitable substitution, or should I just let it go? Thanks for the help!

te-to-self-nights-are-for-sleeping.html posted by NeilStill trying to get back onto a diurnal schedule. (And, I should add, failing.)Maddy and I started watching the new season of Sarah Jane Adventures tonight, which seems back on form after a dodgy second season. Many amazing things waiting for me when I got home -- I still haven't gone through them all yet -- but today's mail brought me a copy of the Fantagraphics Gahan Wilson: 50 Years of Playboy Cartoons book. Three glorious volumes. I wrote the introduction to Volume 2, and thus got it for free. (If you're curious, there are many Gahan Wilson Playboy cartoons up at this website. There's a Gahan Wilson virtual museum over at http://www.gahanwilson.comAnd, of course, although I posted it before, it bears repeating that you can watch the film that Steven-Charles Jaffe made of the "Dark and Silly Night" comic Gahan and I did for art spiegelman and Francoise Mouly's Little Lit at the New Yorker site, or here:And if I'd been here for Hallowe'en I would have posted it here then. Which reminds me, The Graveyard Book party season is over. Over thirty independent bookshops had Graveyard Book parties (The ABA's Bookselling This Week reports on thirteen of the parties -- and the shops -- at http://news.bookweb.org/7149.html.) The very best one of all will get me in their shop doing a signing in December and, looking at these thirteen, I am very glad I am not any kind of a judge for the awards. My only hope is that the shop that wins will be somewhere warm. But most of the places on the party map will be just as cold by December as my house. (Vague and only climate-based relief that HarperCollins said No to Alaska in the rules mingles with vague and selfish disappointment that they also said No to Hawaii.)It looks like the CBS Sunday Morning profile on me is going out this Sunday, the 8th, 9:00-10:30 AM, ET. According to this website.. which left me wanting to go "I am NOT a tender-hearted master of the macabre, I am in fact VERY SCARY INDEED," but I suspect I would convince nobody.Thrilled to see that Odd and the Frost Giants was listed as one of Amazon.com's Best Books of 2009. While I was in China The Graveyard Book was listed as one of the ALA's teens top ten for 2009 as well, an award voted on by over 11,000 teens. (And I made it onto the list with lots of other good people.)Also, Fragile Things was awarded the French 2010 Les Grands Prix de l’Imaginaire Award for translated short fiction. My thanks to the judges, but mostly to the translator, who in this case is the incredibly talented Michel Pagel. If I ever look good, do well, sell books or am popular in a foreign country, it's because of the translators, and they never get enough thanks or acclaim. And I think I'll post the cover here, because I never have.
Correspondent Serena Altschul visits author Neil Gaiman -- the tender-hearted master of the macabre -- whose books, including Coraline and The Graveyard Book have topped best-seller lists for 25 years. You're welcome. I think this link has everything for sale in the auction: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/scrawldog/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
I am becoming hooked on http://curiousexpeditions.org.
I was extremely disappointed by the news on the current status of Argleton in Lancashier, especially so since I was hoping to buy a house there. I was going to move to Chako Paul City in Sweden instead, but appear to be the wrong gender and orientation. So probably I'll stay home.(Hmm. You know, posting that French book-cover reminds me that there are some really beautiful new covers out there right now, especially from Poland and Russia. I know for I have signed them for people. I'll try and get some nice clean examples to put up here.)
And finally, a link to Joanne Leow's blog. It was lovely to see her again, four years on, when I went to Singapore - it was a great interview, and you can watch us chatting about writing, what I'm currently up to, signings, and why I don't write the same sorts of things twice in a row, at the Primetime Morning site: here's part 1 and part 2....Dear Mr. Gaiman,
I was wondering if you would be so kind as to mention an upcoming art auction on your blog. The art auction is “art for hearts”. It is an auction of artwork donated by children’s illustrators such as Korky Paul, Lynne Chapman and An Vrombaut. Most of the artwork is original although there are also some signed digital prints and screen prints too.
All proceeds from the auction will be donated to help fund research by the transplant team at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Transplanted organs do not have the same life expectancy as non-transplanted organs and the transplant team is looking at finding ways to combat this.
Full details of the auction are available to view at http://art-for-hearts.blogspot.com
It will run on Ebay for a week starting on the 2nd of November. To locate the items people will need to type "art for heart" into the search area and choose "Art" or "books" for items.
Many thanks,
Kristine Stacey

Earlier tonight, I received a text from my best friend, Jeff. "What are you up to?"
"I'm making brownies."
"Can you bring one for my lunch tomorrow?"
"Of course I can."
"Thanks."
"You're welcome. I'm just happy you wanted one. :) "---I enjoy cooking and baking for people. Watching them enjoy what I've made warms my heart and makes me smile. It always has.Interestingly enough, people act like baking is a huge feat. I'm not entirely sure why because, if you follow the rules, there's no magic or voodoo involved. A lot of people find it so intimidating that they do not even attempt to bake. This seems silly to me because, for most things, even if it doesn't work out, you haven't wasted much. Often, though, when people finally DO try, they find it easier than they thought it'd be.
Cooking brings about a different kind of awe from people. Most people have cooked before and have found it hard. Or too much work. Or not fun. Or... I don't know. What I do know is that I love to cook, but it wasn't always that way. I didn't always like being on the "hot" side of the kitchen. I preferred the "sweet" side. Oh, sure, I knew how to cook. Not only did I know how to cook "home foods", but I had to spend time in the "hot" kitchen at culinary school. But I could never figure out why people wanted to cook something savory. I only ate savory foods because, well, if I ate cake for dinner ever night, all my teeth would fall out and I'd be severely lacking in nutrients.
I think this started changing for me when I went to work at the bar. Within the first week, I'd managed to cut out a chunk of my finger. I took about fifteen minutes out, then went right back to work. Working at the bar was tough. For most of the night, I was the only cook so everything was dependent on -me- and how I did. Yet, I enjoyed watching people appreciate my food. Some of these people ate there almost every night and probably had no clue how to even turn on that funny box with the swirls on top in their kitchen.
Eventually, I moved on to a less strenuous job, and cooked only at home. More often, though, we ate out or ordered in. I still enjoyed cooking, but my husband didn't really care what I made, as long as it was a food he liked. This isn't to say he didn't appreciate when I cooked, because I know he did, just as I appreciated when he cooked. But, to him, food is, well, just food.
These days, I mainly just cook for myself. I used to think it was too much trouble and either ate what my roommates fixed for me or had something frozen-in-a-box. Went I went vegan, this became less of an option. The food the roomies cook is generally meat-centric. Frozen food is still an option, but it's more expensive and I've been trying to stretch my budget.
Now, you'd think that eliminating animal products would make cooking harder, perhaps a bit more of a chore. For me, it's done the opposite. Now that I'm not focusing on meat and cheese, the culinary world has opened up for me. I'm cooking a wider variety than I ever have before. I'm enjoying my food more.
I finally realize why people enjoy cooking. I'm now enjoying it not just to please others, though I certainly still love when it does. I'm making food that will please ME.
And that? Well, that makes me quite happy.

For those of you who have cooked with asian herbs, I have a question! At our final farmer's market a few weeks back, I bought a bunch of this mysterious herb. It was next to the cilantro, and looked a little like basil, but smelled like something out of a Thai restaurant. The leaves are less shiny and pointier than basil, and have a darker color in the middle of the leaves (almost like a bad spot, but it was on every leaf even when fresh) in addition to a purplish stem. Their flavor is a little soapy, like cilantro, but also rather citrusy, and reminded me of Thai food - like tom yum, or some sort of Thai curry. I've used it in pho and in a stir fry, with good results.I've looked up common Thai herbs, but none of the pictures quite match, and the descriptions don't really get into what the herbs actually taste like! Can anyone enlighten me as to what this mysterious and tasty herb is by name?

When my spicy char siew ramen arrived…I was still very skeptical. Apprehensively I took a slurp of the soup and I was in broth heaven!! It was super duper good…very very thick…full of punchy flavour. I couldn't believe it was a chicken base broth.
The ramen was cooked perfectly….the texture was very “springy”…..and now to the char siew. I have heard the phrase “oh the meat just melts in your mouth” and well can I say I haven’t actually experienced that much…but I sure did when I tasted this char siew. Very thinly sliced pork slice…with a nice marbling of fat….every little sliver I popped into my mouth slowly melted on my tongue…it was out of this world. Pity the ramen came with only 1 slice of char siew….i am so ordering a side the next time, and yes there will be a next time. Click here to read more about the famous ramen shop and more pictures

posted by NeilI went to XinjiangProvince in Western China to continue researching my Monkey/China book. This is the photo I took of a scenic building that, I discovered when the men came out to arrest us, turned out to be a police station. If you're in Kashgar do not take pictures of this building. Trust me on this. This is what I was researching and working on. (As seen in a little town square, on the way to Yarkand):Xinjiang Province is going to be hard to write about. It's like walking into the Arabian Nights in some ways, and like going back in time in others. It was especially like going back in time on this trip, as, following the Uighur riots in Urumqi in July, the Chinese Government turned off the Internet, text messaging and all international phone calls in or out of the region. I had a great guide who was terrified I'd talk politics, and I rapidly discovered that everything except conversations about the spice-sellers in the market...... or discussion of the pomegranate crop, counted as politics. It made my journey even stranger than it might have been already. While I was there my camera started misbehaving: I hadn't even realised it had a motor in it, but the motor started vibrating gently, producing some very beautiful shots that weren't really what I wanted...Like this shot of a lady in Yarkand market selling peppers and tomatoes that seem to have turned into jewels. After a great deal of reflection I decided not to buy a camel in the market in Kashgar. Here are two camels I didn't buy.In the Russian market in Urumqi I bought a new camera I don't like anywhere nearly as much as my old, sporadically-vibrating one.I went from there to Jinan, Wuqiao and Beijing. This photo, taken in Beijing was one of the highlights of my trip -- and was one the main reasons I went back to China. I wanted to talk to Liu Xiao Ling Tong (the stage name for Mr Zhang Jinlai), who played Monkey in the Chinese television version of Journey to the West. (Here's his blog.)More photos of China and Singapore in my next post, I hope. In summary: Singapore was wonderful, but the visit was much much too short: we were there for about 50 hours altogether. Once again, the food was amazing and the people delightful. Then I went to Chengdu. I don't have photos on my camera of the Galaxy Award ceremony, or the speech I gave at Sechuan University, or the visit to the Earthquake Zone and the talk I gave to the kids there. (Science Fiction World and I are starting a library for them.) (If I can get some photos I'll put them up.)And I was not able to take photos of the encounter with the fourth holiest Buddhist in China, because he is not to be photographed. So instead here's a photo of Amanda Palmer, who joined me for my last few days in China, on the side of a mountain having been recognised by some happy Chinese tourists......Let's see. A quick handful of links...A theatrical production of Neverwhere in Chicago next year is producing a fascinating visit-to-London blog over at http://neverwhat.blogspot.com/.I'll be at the Arts Festival in New Zealand in March. Here's the Town Hall event - http://www.nzfestival.nzpost.co.nz/writers-and-readers/town-hall-talk-neil-gaima n, and it looks like I'll be doing some other events while there. It may sell out fast, so if you're interested, get tickets early. (And do not miss Margo Lanagan, who will also be there, for she is an Incredibly Good Thing.) ....Through most of this summer I was playing with a Lomography Camera. The kind with film in, where you have no idea what you took until it's developed. (The one I used was an LC-A+.) I'm starting to love the results, especially when everything comes in slightly oversaturated. They look like pictures of dreams.(Middle photo of the amazing bubble by Miss Holly Gaiman. Who is fundraising.)
(And you can, of course, click to embiggen the pictures.)...And finally, people sometimes write in and point out that, when I return home, I post pictures of my dog, rapturously dashing somewhere or dancing or stick-wielding to welcome me home. "Why do you not ever post pictures of cats?" they ask. Here is Princess, doing her version of a rapturous welcome, glad that I have not forgotten the trick that she taught me to do, during my time away. The trick involves turning on the tap in the guest bathroom and letting her alternately drink and attack the water with her sharp teeth, until she gets bored:I'm sad to say that while I was away, Hermione died. She was the surviving member of the two mad cat sisters who live in the basement library and Do Not Mingle, and she was almost eighteen. You can see her in this Photosynth of my library downstairs (needs Silverlight). It feels strangely unbalanced to be in a house without Pod and Hermione in it.There. Goodnight.

So I came home the other day to find that my dog had chewed away at the corner of our hot tub cover. I've since got him to stop doing that by attaching balloons to it (he hates them), but the part he got to still looks pretty ratty. My roommate (who owns the house) told me not to worry about it, but I'm kinda curious if something like that can be fixed, and if so, how? I realize pics would go a long ways here, but I'm not sure at the moment where I left my camera. The material is some type of brown vinyl, like what a motorcycle seat or would be covered with. Is anyone here experienced with upholstery repair, or able to recommend some sort of mobile repair service? I'm just west of Troutdale.

As a follow-up to Shopping While Black, here's Shopping While Muslim:
In Lilburn, GA, a mosque seeking to expand and add a cemetery to accommodate its members faces opposition from local non-Muslims. There is a good, detailed article about that here. Here are some direct quotes from residents as to why they oppose the mosque expansion:(real quotes from CBS Channel 9 and The Gwinnett Daily Post) According to the CBS piece, three people also told the reporter that they opposed the mosque because--in their own words--they were racist.A completely separate mosque in neighboring Lawrenceville, GA is also facing a similar issue, with residents holding similarly racist views, saying things like "They are trying to turn a neighborhood into a mosque."For those in the metro Atlanta area who wish to get involved in supporting the mosques and fighting Islamophobia, please leave a comment or message me - we need your support, and have an event planned for this month (November).
- “This is about hurting our community, this is about hurting our kids”
- “I just don't like Muslims and I don't want them taking over our neighborhood”
- “This is not what Lilburn needs. This is a Christian community, and they are anti-Christian.”
In other recent news, please read about the censorship of an article about "how white gay activists can become complicit with this agenda by painting Islam as inherently homophobic and misogynist, and appointing themselves as the saviours of non-white queers." For more on this subject, see the following:-OutRage!ous Censorship of "Gay Imperialism"-Whitewashing gay culture in Lebanon-'Stop using Palestinian gays to whitewash Israel's image'
Finally, here is a great book review titled "Orientalism and Islamophobia in the American left," which deals with anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia not just in the American right, but amongst white liberals and intellectuals as well.x-posted to ap_racism

When I first moved into my current residence, I had two roommates who were a couple, and they lived in the downstairs area of the split-level house. They broke up months ago, and the woman moved out and lives with her new boyfriend. The former couple had two dogs together, but apparently she can only have one dog at her current boyfriend's house. Unfortunately this means that the second dog is left here, receiving no attention from the ex-boyfriend, locked in the garage nearly all the time from what I can tell. The owner claims she's trying to find a home for the dog, but I personally believe she doesn't even think about it. She doesn't live here, she's never around, and it's been months since she left the dog here. Either she's not using any internet resources to find an owner, or she's not actually trying. The poor think howls and yelps when it thinks anyone is home.Momo appears to be a min-pin & chihuahua mix, and she's approximately a year and a half old. She's a very sweet dog who loves to play fetch. If you're interested, please email me at kumori(dot)kaze(at)gmail(dot)com. I will let the owner know that I have found an interested party, and I will find out all the relevant information about the dog to pass along. I do not know if she's fixed yet, or what shots she's had. I will also attempt to get a picture.

OH NO RUN FOR THE HILLS IT'S ANOTHER TIPPING POSTAnyway, I was wondering what the local custom is on tipping at all-you-can-eat buffet places. What I see right now is that my grammy does this ($1 per person) but my mother doesn't. Both are long-time Portlanders with generally similar ideas of etiquette (as you'd expect given that grammy raised mom), so now I'm curious what the norm is. Looking around on the other tables at the place where mom and I typically go, I never see anyone else leaving money on the tables either. These places do not have tip jars by the register as far as I can tell.Is tipping at an all-you-can-eat buffet place typical, like in a full-service restaurant, or just kinda nice, like how I felt about kids bringing me holiday cards when I taught? (I don't plan on stopping grammy from tipping regardless, as she can afford it and I assume it's at least appreciated, but I'd like to know if I'm routinely being a jerk when I'm not eating with her.)Current Music: Benjamin Britten - Festival Te Deum

This summer while in Alsace I bought myself an earthenware kugelhopf mould. The woman who sold it to me did give me instructions as to how to prepare it before I first used it but they were in French and I wasn't paying that much attention thinking I could always google it. Well, google has failed me and so I turn to you wonderful people. I think she said butter it and then put it in the oven for a bit but the only result I've come up with is at the end of this, which is quite different! (And I may be very mistaken but if I add oil to water the oil is just going to float, right and go nowhere near the mould?) I've also looked up tempering terracotta pots for baking and that said repeatedly brush with oil then bake. Does anyone have any ideas? I'd hate to crack my beautiful mould the first time I use it!Current Location:uk

I'm going to another taping of the Late Late Show, on Thursday!! I heard Denis Leary's supposed to be on, though I don't know if that meant he's supposed to be on TV on Thursday or he's taping on Thursday (or both). Let's hope it's the latter, because if I get the opportunity to see my two favorite comedians in the same room, I think I might be able to die happily. ♥

It's probably an incredible long-shot posting here, but trying can't hurt, right? For those of you that know nothing of horses, just scroll on past because I'm not sure this posting will make sense! So I own a horse that I'm trying to half-lease because I only have time to ride her 2-3 times a week now (I'm a 1L law student). And maybe there are some horse-deprived equestrians on this forum who would like to bond with my sweet red-headed mare? She is trained in dressage primarily, but would be fun for anyone with flat-work experience. She does require a confident intermediate rider because she is very light in the mouth and seat, but she has no vices, lots of personality (the good kind), and is one of those mares that bonds with caretakers after a time. In short, she is FUN! When in more regular work she easily performs at an upper training/1st level skill set. Here's the link to my bare-bones Craigslist ad. There are some older pictures of her there.I'm totally willing to negotiate on pricing and times/days, especially for Damn members.

Hello All~I am looking to get a friend of mine a flask for their birthday next week. I thought it would be nice to engrave a message on it. I know that "Remember This" in the mall does engraving but I have heard bad things about the quality of their work. Does anyone have a suggestion for a better place to go? It is my friend's 30th birthday so I want to get her something nice. Thanks in advance for your suggestionsSerenity

Lucy is a 2 year old tuxedo kitty that needs a new home as soon as possible! I just moved and cannot have her in my new apartment. I am also in my final year of college and without a job, and do not have enough time or money to keep supporting her. She needs a better home with someone that is caring and patient. She gets along with other cats and dogs (as long as they are friendly). She is up to date on vaccines.e-mail me if you are interested, and I will tell you more about her. elbeeeye at gmail dot comI've already posted numerous times on Craigslist, but so many other people have to surrender their pets, that Lucy's post gets pushed back to the next page in just a few hours.more photos

Thanks everyone for the suggestions on good places to look for a pet. After some research finding a reputable breeder, we found our new puppy Henry. Given our past experience with shelters (with our cat), we decided to not go that route this time. Henry is a Cocker Spaniel who can hold his own with my mom's full-grown, albeit small, cocker. Henry is quite big for his age and will probably be a 30 lbs cocker at adulthood. I can certainly take him out for walks, but he loves being off his leash and I know he'd enjoy getting to run in an off-leash area. Any suggestions for off-leash areas that cater to young and/or small dogs? He's not ready for the big time quite yet.Must be on the west side and tri-met-able5 comments or

Ohai guys. My boyfriend is searching for a Mortal Kombat ringtone that will play on an LG Xenon. We're with AT&T if that makes any difference. It's surprisingly hard to find, and I googled it but nothing even remotely legit is coming up.Tried to find a ringtone from Dr. Horrible for the song "A Man's Gotta Do" but no such luck. =(

I had a chance to make roast pork rack recently (an earlier experiment with roast pork loin had come out well, but I wasn't too sure why...) and was even happier to be able to document part of the process. The starting ingredients were portobello mushrooms, garlic and bacon. I found that by adding mushrooms to the stuffing, the moisture from the 'shrooms (as they cook) help to keep the pork roast tender. The full recipe is on the long side, so I'here

Sausage and Herb Sauce Over Bow Ties, originally uploaded by kitchenbeard.
Sausage and Herb Sauce Over Bow Ties4 oz pancetta8 oz sweet fennel sausage4 tennis ball sized yellow heirloom tomatoes1 bunch parsley1 bunch basil1 bunch sage4 large cloves garlicApprox ¼ cup sauvignon blanc2 oz goat cheese4 oz bow tie pastaOlive oil as neededOptional parmesan reggiano for grating1)Cut pancetta into ½ inch cubes. In a deep skillet or duch oven, heat some olive oil till it shimmers and then add the pancetta.2)Cut open sausages and remove filling from casings. Discard casings. When pancetta begins to brown add sausage meat and continue cooking over medium heat until both have released their fat and are browning.3)While meat cooks, trim stems off herbs. Add all herbs to bowl of food processor with garlic, one of the tomatoes diced and a little olive oil. Puree until it turns into a paste. It doesn’t need to be uniform.4)Dice the rest of the tomatoes roughly and add to the pan. Stir quickly making sure that the meat isn’t burning. Use the natural tomato juices to deglaze. Add the herb mixture. Mix well and then add the wine. Reduce heat to a simmer and allow to reduce. The sauce may be very oily looking.5)Cook pasta to barely al dente in salted water.6)When pasta is done portion into three or four bowls and top with sauce. Add some crumbled goat cheese to each. Also serve with parmesan reggiano if you wish.

Hey DPers,I discovered today that I have a chipped tooth. Not sure how it happened. It's not bleeding or hurting, but it's a pretty huge hole in my tooth, and I'm afraid food will get stuck in it and it'll get infected. I think it needs professional attention.I have a job right now, for which I feel truly grateful. However, it is a temp job and I have no insurance. Any recommendations for where I can go for dental care? Do you know of any good resources for the uninsured? I would hesitate to call myself poor in these times we live in, but I sure ain't rich either, and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.Tags:dentists

I baked two cakes this weekend, one for me and my boyfriend, and one for the Fall Festival at my church. I wanted to bake a lovely layer cake that folks at the Fall Festival would be excited to win in the cake walk; hope I succeeded! This is Barefoot Contessa's Carrot Pineapple Cake. It was really moist and delicious, with hunks of walnut, raisin, carrot, and pineapple throughout. I used buttercream on the Festival cake, since it wouldn't be refrigerated, but went with the traditional decadent cream cheese frosting on our version. For more information about decorating these cakes, my ruminations about cake walks, and gratuitous pictures of my toy poodle, please head over to my baking blog, Willow Bird Baking!x posted to food_porn, bakebakebake, and cooking

Okay, sowinstonchiswell 's post last week about bugs in produce led to some comments of "Don't you wash your vegetables off when you get home from the grocery store?"I never wash them off right when I get home b/c it always seemed like storing wet vegetables would lead to ... goopyness, going bad quickly, molding, or something. I've always waited until I was actually going to cook them to wash them off.But I'm curious: do YOU wash your vegetables off right away and then store them, or store them and wash them later? If you wash them first, do you put them away wet, or do you dry them? How do you dry leafy greens like lettuce? If you put them away wet, do they get yucky quickly?I'm just wondering, b/c maybe I've just never known the proper way to do this...Portland related b/c we eat vegetables here.

I like to make French Toast with hot dog rolls instead of regular bread sometimes, I think it ends up way more custardy inside (since the rolls are way thicker then slices of bread).Plus, we normally end up throwing two or three stale roles away every time we have hot dogs, this saves them from going to waste.![]()
