The answer to this question is probably glaringly obvious, but I still don't know.I want to get a Samsung Eternity phone, preferably new (but near new is good too). Does anyone know where I can get a GOOD deal on one without a plan? Typically you can get around half off if you get a plan. But I already have a plan! I tried Stuff and CL, but nothing has panned out. Ideas? Got one you don't want?

I'm looking for two very unique ornaments for the tree this year. One I know can be found, the other... might be more of a challenge.I need a pickle and a turkey ornament. The pickle and the turkey is an inside joke with the significant other. This will be our first Christmas, so I thought it would be neat to get these things. The pickle, as luck would have it, is actually an ornament from a German myth that is still going strong. (See story here: http://german.about.com/library/blgermyth11.htm). So I know it's possible to get the pickle, I can get it online. But we want to go to a store to buy it together, so I'm hoping someone knows where to get a pickle ornament. Distance, within 2 hours of PDX. The turkey? I think that will be a little harder to find a turkey ornament. But you know what would work? Just a small plastic turkey, like the kind you would get for Barbie or some other small doll. I can always put a hole in the top and make an ornament out of it. Please and thank you!Current Mood:

I'm going to a pre-Thanksgiving dinner potluck tomorrow.I'm a college student and don't have the desire/time/utensils/energy to do mashed potatoes from scratch, so I'm going to make them from a box. Judge me as you will.My question to you all is: how can I make these mashed potatoes better? Spices? Onions? Sour cream? Cheese? I have a pretty full spice rack and would be willing to run to Trader Joe's for a few ingredients if necessary.

I posted here a few months ago about my sandwich. My big, huge, gigantic, 2,406-calorie, makes-you-want-to-die sandwich... My sandwich is called the "Money Mark" and I think that it's SO GOOD that last time I announced that I made a website dedicated to that very fact. I wanted to spread the good word about the deliciousness.
It was generally well recieved, and people were pretty excited about it, so I thought i'd come back here with some good news for iPhone and iPod touch users...
I made an app for iPhones and iPod Touches. It lists the ingredients, recipe and includes an instructional video. Basically, everything that's on the website is included in this app.
Here's a DIRECT iTunes link (this will launch iTunes)
Please note that i'm not making a dime off of any of this and have nothing to sell. I'm just letting everybody know that there is AN AMAZING sandwich that exists out there in the world, and if you want to take a few hours off your life, eat a Money Mark.

Hi. A while back, a mac 'n cheese recipe was posted here (I think). It had gouda, American and cheddar cheese in it. Unfortunately, I cannot find the recipe and no longer have a saved copy since the motherboard in my previous laptop died. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? Hey there, DPers! I come to you with a question, and digging through the archives didn't lead me to any similar posts, so here goes.Because of a series of unexpected expenses that caught me off guard recently, I need to be super frugal for the next three weeks, and one place I'm hoping to save money is on food. Thus, my question:What is the cheapest place here in town to buy groceries?I currently do a lot of my shopping at WINCO, and have had pretty good luck finding good deals there, but I'm not really certain if there is a better place to get cheap stuff.Location isn't so much of a concern. I figure that, since I have a vehicle and will be making one grand shopping trip out of it, I can drive pretty much anywhere in the area, from Gresham to Beaverton to Oregon City. So...what do you guys suggest? Thanks so much for your help, DP.

In order to save money, I've been trying to use dried beans instead of canned ones in my cooking. I soak them overnight and cook them until they're soft enough, but they still end up with a weird grainy texture instead of a nice smooth one. I thought maybe I was undercooking them, but I tried cooking them longer and they just end up soft AND grainy. What am I doing wrong? Or, is this a problem with the beans? Thanks!

Help! I need two ideas for birthday cakes. The first: my boss's birthday is next week, I want to bake a cake, I usually bring this chocolate espresso cake, but want something different. I'd like something kind of impressive. I'm a pretty proficient baker so give me your best recipe. I'm completely drawing a blank. The second: my daughter's first birthday. I want to make something simple, as it will be just my hubby and I for this cake. I was thinking I'd like to make a thick round cake that's a single layer and decorate it simply but something kind of cute. Does anyone know any tricks for baking a nice tall simple cake?2 comments or

l posted by NeilI'm happy to say that I've not won any more awards in the last 24 hours, or done anything particularly noteworthy. I've walked the dog. Written things. Listened to things on headphones. Eaten a bit. (I've lost weight in the last year. I'm about twenty pounds lighter than I was this time last year, without having done much more than eating smaller portions and a lot more sensibly. This makes me happy.) I spiced three different chilis (the Hot, the Mild and the Vegetarian) for the weekend visitors. (Lorraine, my assistant, traditionally makes the chili, and I come in at the end and spice them. Thus it has always been.) During any down moments I've read comics, for a project I don't know if I can talk about yet. Some astonishingly good ones, some not so good.Maddy and I watched the antepenultimate Doctor Who special, The Water of Mars, which we both liked a lot more than the Bus-in-the-desert episode. Good, scary classic, monstery Doctor Who which felt predictable (in a good way - almost inevitable) until suddenly it wasn't, and it got interesting in different ways. I liked the plot and performances, and feel comfortably certain that David Tennant's Doctor is going to have a better exit from the stage than any of the other nine. (Do not write and tell me that Colin Baker never even got to regenerate, and neither did Paul McGann, so really that should have been seven, because I will not be properly sympathetic.)Let's close some tabs:For the curious, here's a video of the winning Graveyard Book party in Winnipeg, and photos of the winning party in Decatur, GA
Dear Mr.Gaiman,
I am so excited that you are coming to my city, Winnipeg, for a book signing! I do have a tiny question though, how many books are you able to sign? Please write back! I'm looking forward to the book signing on December 15 2009!
From your biggest fan, Shivani Hunter
It's going to depend on the numbers of people who turn up. Assuming that it's around a thousand people in each location (Winnipeg and Decatur) I'll probably pre-sign a load of books, so people who just want to hear me read or answer questions and don't want to stand in a long line can get a signed book and go home, and we'll do something along the lines of I'll sign one thing, but if you buy a book of mine from the store I'll sign two things, which allows people to get the Thing They Love Most signed, and get something signed for someone (as we're heading into the holidays then) or for yourself....
Shaun Tan's story of Eric, the Foreign Exchange Student, from the Guardian, makes me toe-curlingly happy. It went up a while ago, and I've meant to post it here many times. Click on it, then click through the story, and you will not regret the time spent, I promise. Delicate, clever, gentle, strange and odd, in all the good ways. (It's possible I may have actually posted it here at some point. If so, smile indulgently, and read it again.)...Naperville, near Chicago, will be having its ninth annual "Naperville Reads" program this year, when everyone in the city is encouraged to read something by the same author. I'll be in Naperville toward the end of February, and "citywide events are planned". I do not know what they are either. Details at http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=338299 ...I started getting somewhat premature congratulations from people today when Screen International did interviews with the directors of Up, Fantastic Mr Fox and Coraline and described them in the headline as "this year's Oscar-nominated films". I think what Screen meant was "This year's submitted-for-Oscars and may-have-a-good-chance-of-being nominated films" as 20 animated films have been submitted so far. And no-one will know what's actually been nominated until Feb 2nd 2010.And Coraline gets talked about in this excellent New York Times article on Unleashing Life's Wild Things.Molly Crabapple's site has a great photo of the art that she and Fred Harper did for the Amanda Palmer Brooklyn show, with me and her and Fred and Amanda.(Reminder: Miss Amanda's last show is in Knoxville, TN on Sunday. Mention at the Merchandise Table that some strange man sent you from his blog and you will get something cool.)...Remember the Best Pecan Pie on the planet I was sent for having The Graveyard Book on the NYT Bestseller list for 52 consecutive weeks? Elise Howard guest-blogs the history of the pie and how you too can make it. How good can a Pecan Pie get? About this good....I'm enjoying the commentary and the travel photographs over at http://neverwhat.blogspot.com -- I don't know if I'm going to be able to be in Chicago for their production of Neverwhere at the end of April, but just from reading the commentary, I know I want to.The annual Moth auction is now over, and soon I'll find out who paid $4,400 for afternoon tea with me, and when we're going to have it. (Part of me goes WHY DEAR GOD WHY? while another part goes, WELL IT IS FOR A GOOD CAUSE.)...I was fascinated to learn that there is a bedbug registry website tracking cases of bedbugs across the US, and letting you know which hotels have had bedbug outbreaks at http://bedbugregistry.com...And finally, a letter from one Rupert Psmith, a gentleman I had always believed to be fictional:
Dear fine, noble sir, I wish to inquire as to your favorite Wodehouse novels. As I was looking upon journals of my exploits, strangely written in the third person, it occurred to me that my autobiographical tales always seemed to bear the most power. I was wondering if you felt the same.
Yours sincerely,
Some Ass
I do. My favourite Wodehouse novel is definitely Psmith Journalist. I think, because it was about something, in a way that most Wodehouse books aren't. (They're about themselves, in the same way that Agatha Christie novels are about themselves.)And yes, Comrade Psmith (the P is, of course, silent, as in Psittacosis or Pneumonia) you are my favourite Wodehouse character. Even if he did steal you from Rupert D'Oyly Carte....Sorry about the blog title. It was that or A Quiet Sort of Day With Tab Closing, and I thought perhaps the less honest one might be more fun. There was, in fact, no blood anywhere in this blog entry at all. Not even in imaginable quantities.

Hi all,I run a feminist reading group at my university and recently we did a session on Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw's excellent Mapping the Margins:Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence Against Women of Color. The group is predominantly white women, and although we do have a few members who are not white they totally understandably didn't come to this session. There was quite a lot of resistance to discussing the article and to taking issues of intersectionality seriously. I was foolishly, naively shocked (I recognise that this in itself is a demonstration of white privilege - how can I have been in feminism so long without experiencing this before!? although, of course I may just have failed to recognise it before now). So, I'm looking for more reading we can do on the subject. Any and all suggestions would be very welcome. While we are an academic reading group, I am really open to reading non-academic writing particularly given that often academia forecloses a lot of what people have to say. I am also interested in compiling a list of really great feminism by non-white scholars/writers that doesn't necessarily focus on race/racism, as I'm concerned that the only non-white feminism on our list so far is specifically about race and therefore risks making race seem like the only thing non-white feminists write about.

For the bread, I used a standard white bread recipe (1.5 lb.) and added 2 tsp. black pepper and a half cup of Sargento Bistro shredded cheddar and bacon cheese to the mix. I buttered a slice of it, covered it with some of the remaining cheese and bacon, and toasted it in a toaster oven at the dark setting.Toasted cheesy bacon cheddar pepper bread, originally uploaded by Coyoty.

Hi,For my college project, I need a couple of sample kids recipes. I would love something that has vegetables and other healthy food-pyramid offerings, and something that doesn't have pre-prepared ingredients like peanut butter, pizza crust and so on. Unfortunately, my Google search brought precisely that: Jell-O "salad," peanut butter balls rolled in crushed cornflakes, and other fairly disgusting stuff. Do you know of any website that has good, simple, and healthy recipes for kids?Thank you!UPDATE to clarify: the recipes for kids to cook (hopefully, to eat later, but cooking is a must :) ). I was thinking about this and then someone posted about replacing an omelet pan and it occurred to me I could ask you guys. I've been using the same enamel over steel cookware for about 15 years. In the past year I have managed to ruin two pots (totally my fault, got started on the web and didn't hear the timer). I'd replace them with identical pots, but they were Pfaltzgraff pots and the disadvantage to making everything match is that the companies which make them decide to stop making them and then you can't replace. I don't know if that has happened in this instance or not, but I'd just rather gradually change completely rather than rely on something which isn't going to be there in the future. So my question is; If you were going to replace your cookware one piece at a time, which cookware would you chose as the replacement? I'd like both practical and 'if I won the lottery' suggestions.

May 17, 2009:I am on my bed, talking to my husband, when he tells me that he still loves me but is no longer in love with me and that he won't kick me out, but... I go to the bathroom. Shut the door. Lock it. Turn on the shower and bawl my eyes out. When I come out, he is gone. I don't see him again until hours and hours later when he comes back from having gone out with a friend, having ignored my calls and my texts. By this time, I am already packing a good portion of my stuff in my sister's car.People tell me that things will improve, I'll be better, blah blah fucking blah stupid bullshit people always say. I quit listening.November 17, 2009:I wake up in a very foul mood. I try to get over it and mostly do by the time I get to work. But, throughout the day, my breath is taken away again and again and again.Six months.Six months of watching him be happy with other women when he wasn't happy with me.Six months of discussing our various relationships with each other.Six months of near-daily phone calls and conversations.Six months and I still miss him and the life I had before and my home and having all my furry kids together and yeah, maybe it wasn't always great, but maybe I was considering leaving but never did because "us" meant too much to me and also because I was scared.I wonder: how does he view me now? Am I a friend? Something more? A relic from the past? More like a sibling than a spouse?I may never know.
I don't think the lives we're leading now are any better.
They're just different.
And maybe that's the hardest part of all.

One goal I've never been able to reach is to eat an uber healthy lunch every day.
I wanted to have a huge green salad with grilled/roasted chicken and an apple or banana. But, I cannot force myself to eat the same thing every day.
Last night I made roasted veggies: carrots, parsnips, brussel sprouts, red potato, sweet potato, garlic, shallots and seasonings. Its AWESOME!
I do NOT like minestrone soup or tomato based soups.

i need a portable storage drive that can handle running continuously all day. i want it to keep my music on.i think i've narrowed it down to either toshiba or western digitalopinions? other suggestions? where to buy? i'm looking to keep the space at 500gb or above and the price around $100-$120. i have an older WD desktop drive that's huge and kind of shitty. i carefully took out a DJin' a couple times and the casing snapped out of place on one corner and i can't get it back. my boyfriend has a WD one like i linked to and he says its great, so *I* have conflicting experience with them, but they're affordable and convenient for sure.

Ahoy there neighbors. Some pals from Seattle are coming into town for a bachelor party and they asked me what strip club I recommend. I have my favorites but I prefer a more relaxed atmosphere and I am pretty sure they are looking for 'rowdy' so as to party their asses off. Anything spring to mind? I think its going on tomorrow, I am not going so I ask mostly just to increase the already sterling reputation of our town. Thanks!

It was a small intimate gathering of just a couple of friends…so it was relatively fuss free….especially seeing we didn’t have to bother about the lamb sitting on the bbq.
He salt and peppered the lamb…seared it over high heat to seal the meat…and then allowed it to turn slowly over the coals for 2 hours on very low heat. He added some cabernet soaked hickory wood chips to the coals…which gave the lamb a wonderful aroma and smokey taste.
The lamb came out PERFECT….just a gentle shade of pink in the middle…oh so tender thanks to the slow cooking over the coal. Click here for more pictures of the meal and to read more

What are everyone's favorite ethnic dishes using ground beef? I'm especially interested in trying South American and African cuisine; not too big on Indian flavors but I'm open to pretty much anything, and have 5 pounds of frozen ground beef to use up. TIA!!!!7 comments or

So I've been experimenting with hot chocolate recipes because I'm too lazy to go to TJ's and get my favorite mix (not even certain they'll have it). Hubby liked my previous version a lot but has declared this one perfect. Here's how I did it:5 very heaping tablespoons cocoa (Hershey's is what I had on hand)3 coffee mugs of milk4-5 generous squirts of agave nectar - I'd say each squirt is about a teaspoon or so easy to adjust this to taste1 TB granulated sugarroughly 3/4 tsp Saigon cinnamonWhisk and heat until warmed up. Adjust sweetness to taste.Add in 2 white chocolate Lindt truffles (cut into 1/4 pieces) near the end when it's hot and stir until melted.3 comments or

I have been thinking about making these and planning them for weeks. Today I finally managed to make them. I thought that they made a suitable subject for my first post here, I can't help but salivate looking at this pic knowing that beneath the buttercream there's a gooey cherry centre surrounded by chocolate. Black Forest Gateaux may be one of my favourite things but the cupcake incarnation is fast gaining on it!More pics and the recipe over at AnnaInTheKitchen.

I will be in Japan myself in a couple weeks. Do I bow to the company leaders that I am going to visit? Or do I just look them in the eye and give them a firm handshake?

So on Thursday we are having our Thanksgiving potluck at work, and I've signed up to bring mac & cheese. We always eat first thing in the morning (we are an impatient bunch, and also we don't really have ways of heating up all of the food at once for lunch) so I have to arrive with the food hot and ready to go at 8am. I would like to be able to put everything together on Wednesday night, so I can just pop it all into the oven on Thursday morning and take it to work straight out of the oven. However, the only recipe I have that allows for this is this recipe, which is good but I want to try something else. I want to make something with real cheese!Would I be able to do this with any mac & cheese recipe? Is there anything I need to look for in a receipt to know that I *can't* do this? The recipe I have calls for uncooked noodles, and they cook when you put it all in the oven. Would cooking the noodles ahead of time and then leaving them mixed up with whatever make them mushy and gross? Or would I just be better off making it and then just warming it up the next morning?Additionally, if anyone has a truly awesome mac & cheese recipe, I'd appreciate it. I don't want to use my mom's recipe because it's waaaaaaay too rich, with like a gallon of butter and a few dozen eggs*. I figure I can always google for a recipe that looks good, but this community always has brilliant ideas :)*exaggeration, but still.Tags:help: cooking method

Saturday whilst freezing my ass off standing in line at the Hair of the Dog Brewery for their special anniversary sale, a fellow struck up a conversation with me, asking for assistance writing his book about beer. What he's looking for is blind taste testers, to all get together at some point, drink some beer, take some notes, and then he'll compile the reviews and write a book about it.I don't drink the stuff because I think it tastes like rotten wheat (I was buying beer as a favor for an out-of-state friend who idolizes HotD beer and couldn't make it), and thus can not help him, but I took his card and told him I'd pass on his information to those who enjoy beer. Which is probably some of you!His name is Seamus Campbell, his website is here, he can be reached for more information about the tasting at seamus@fearlesscritic.com .And.....drink!

oh yeah, and roast beef, too. And gravy, and peas, and roasted carrots, and garlic mashed potatoes. But most importantly, YORKSHIRE PUDDING.This was my first attempt at this grand and most favourite meal. I did overcook the meat, which I think is a common issue, but it was still so so tasty. I am currently enjoying cold roast beef sandwiches with mustard.

My bread fanaticism began when publishers sent me a copy of Andrew Whitley’s new book, Bread Matters: The State of Modern Bread and a Definitive Guide to Baking Your Own. The book makes the case for bread activism -- avoiding possibly harmful and certainly less wholesome mass-produced bread in favor of making your own. Apart from just a political stance, though, Whitley presents breadmaking as an artform -- and one that doesn't have to be too time-consuming, at that. He calculates that a loaf of bread takes about 30-40 minutes of active work punctuated by periods of waiting.
This was my first experience with letting a sponge ferment for days and baking it into a loaf of delicious bread -- and I'm hooked on the experience, from mixing, to kneading, to proofing, to baking, to eating! My boyfriend and I ate our cheese bread with chicken and dumplings, and then used the leftovers for something decidedly more sinister . . . :)
( recipe and photos, including a picture of the PERFECT USE for leftover cheese bread )
To read my review of the book Bread Matters, listen to me waxing poetic about bread, see a photo of how entertaining kneading can be, or just to see more pictures of that amazing breakfast sandwich, please head over to my baking blog, Willow Bird Baking!

Does anyone have recommendations for piercers in Portland who do triangles? I looked on BMEzine & only saw Adorn mentioned, & I have no experience with them, nor have I heard anything about them. I typically go to Nick at STTP, although I bought jewelry from Robot & fell in love with the male piercer there, so I've had--or am willing to have--great experiences with both.Any thoughts on location, piercer, or the process in general?Or, bonus question: how do you feel about metal in panties?

Anyone get married in MultCo and (or) know whether or not both bride and groom can legally change their name that way? The website information seems to indicate so, and I figure I'd be impatient and try to get an answer right now than wait a few hours to call the county office.

i want to see the meteor shower tomorrow night. What's a good place to see them, I have a car so I can drive out. Would the best bet be to hop on 26, drive towards Mt Hood til I'm out past Gresham and all the lights, and just pull over? Or is there a better, more organized plan of action I should consider?Nevermind, checked the weather report, nothing within a 2 hour drive will be clear skies.

Hello again, DP!I was doing a closet purge today, and I found my old engagement ring in the depths of a drawer. My ex specifically said previously that he didn't want it back, and I could use a bit of extra cash to help pay some medical bills. It's a pretty modest ring, but it is made of quality materials. (i.e. real gold and small diamonds) Does anyone have a tip on where I might have the best luck with selling it for a fair price, besides the obvious pawn shop or Craigslist? Also, I know diamonds don't exactly hold their value well, so is this even worth the energy? Thanks muchly!

Hey guys,I have a pretty fab looking jar of pumpkin and basil pasta sauce but I really want to add some stuff to it before serving. Maybe some sort of meet and/or cheese? Some cooked ricotta mixed through? I know proscuitto is awesome with pumpkin but something thinly sliced will probably be lost in it and it is pretty expensive. Any other suggestions/combos?Current Location:homeCurrent Mood:

I just wanted to thank anyone that took two seconds to try and help me out with my computer problems, I ended up getting rid of it, all it took was not being lazy. For those who said simply "get a mac" I have one and I dont see how that fixes my pc.

My first post and my camera battery is dead! Anyways, had a late lunch so we didn't cook dinner tonight. I got hungry while watching The Amazing Race. I nuked a couple of store bought egg rolls, and concocted my own "sweet and sour sauce", but it is more like "sweet and spicy". I mixed King Kelly Orange Marmalade and Sriracha...it is perfect!

Is it a requirement that people become angsty, trendy/counter-trendy, pseudo-political activitist douche bags with a militant alternative diet and preferred method of locomotive arrogance when they move to Portland, or is it just a learned trait? Not even the gays are as flamingly happy as they once were in this place. What the fuck happened to my happy-go-lucky Portland?

I know DP has some tech powers out there. So this is my quest, a quest to end my computer born stress.Recently I have been having issues with "Autorun.ini" files on my external drives. Primarily linked to Rundll32.dll.exe . This is my culprit I believe. For the most part it was just very suspicious errors. Until tonight. First my web cam started turning on and off, then my cdrom drive opened and closed on its own. This all freaked me out.... the computer crashes..... GREAT.I reboot. It starts happening again, but the cam stays on and I get an alert "Damn you look sexy on cam" Mind you this is a windows system alert. So Im like.... yep hacked. All of a sudden an ie based "Ghost Chat" pops up. I ended up finding out in C:\windows\system32\rundll32\rundll32.dll.exe there was a file called logs.dat and it was a keylogger file. I found a way to stop it for now, but I want rid of it completely, any ideas?

I need a little help. I have about 8 bananas and was thinking of using a few of them for a banana cake, but I don't know how it would turn out because their all going bad. Would I still be able use them? Anyone know of a few other recipes I could use for them? I'd hate to throw them away.
Thanks,
