S1 Wind Chimes
First workshop project
Several S1 classes have recently completed wind chimes. All based their designs on the 'ancient elements' - earth, wind, fire and water.
These chimes were made by, from left, Daphne Leung, Poppy Apter and Julia MacPherson.

Clock (E-Scape Project)
Mrs Smyth's class recently completed their 'E-Scape' project - the design and construction of a clock.
Pupils in the class were given considerable design freedom and used the E-Scape 'Fizzbooks' - small laptop computers with built-in cameras and microphones - to document their design decisions.
Mrs Smyth has posted several articles about the project on our departmental blog -

Fizzbook Feedback
Fizzbook FeedbackScott made a good job of his clock, employing plug cutting in a range of hardwoods.
Ewan Campbell - S3 Craft & Design
Clock (E-Scape Project)
Ewan has added brass and aluminium to his hardwood dial. The numbers are 'letraset' style transfers.
Ross Clark - S3 Craft & Design
Clock (E-Scape Project)
Ross has used two sheets of acrylic for his dial. The numbers are 'letraset' style transfers.

Marc has employed oak for his dial, with sheet aluminium and mahogany veneer decoration.
Confusingly, the decorative elements don't correspond to hours.
Mr Cockburn & Class 2l
Building Arches
Euan Cockburn is currently on placement with us, from Edinburgh University's Post Graduate Diploma in Education course. He has made a fine start.
Recently, he ran our arch building activity with class 2l, with considerable success: very few teams manage to build all three arches in a single lesson, but several of Mr Cockburn's class did.

Departmental Book 2009
Our 'review of the year' book arrived from last week and we're very pleased with the quality. The book is Blurb's hard back version with a dust jacket. The images have printed particularly well.
The book includes a selection of the best pupil work, information on new initiatives for 2009, classroom photos, an extracurricular competition and our London study visit.
Departmental Book 2009
On Demand Printing
The book opens and sits well, making it easy to read.
The paper is heavy in weight (we opted for the premium grade) with a matt finish. The dust jacket has a semi-gloss finish.
Departmental Book 2009
On Demand Printing
Higher and Advanced Higher Graphics pupils will be having their own books printed and bound at Blurb this session.
Pupils in the Advanced Higher Graphics class are compiling portfolio books, containing the best of their Graphics, Art & Design, Product Design and Craft & Design work from the last few years. The books will be taken along to university and art college interviews.
Higher Graphics pupils are writing and illustrating their own children's story books.
Departmental Book 2009
On Demand Printing
The cover is plain black, without a title down the spine.
Departmental Book 2009
On Demand Printing
Blurb's first 'price point' is up to forty pages, so that's how many pages our book has.
Book size options at Blurb.com
On Demand Printing
These folded cards were produced to show pupils the size options for books at Blurb.com. Each has the price listed inside.
The two books in the foreground weren't printed at Blurb, but show the two other cover options available - a hard back with an image laminated on, and a soft cover.
Departmental Book 2009 - 'page-flip' versions
Available to read on-line
Small version - loads quicker.
Big version - big enough to read comfortably. To maximise the image size, click on the '1:1' button.
Using this free page flipping flash utility, pupils will be able to make their books available on-line for university entry tutors to check out - at their portfolio sites at www.folio1.org
In-house printing option
Advanced & Higher Graphics
Pupils may choose to have their booklets printed in-house to reduce costs.
To find out what quality of product we can achieve, this exemplar booklet was produced.
In-house printing option
Advanced & Higher Graphics
We've used heavy weight, smooth, matt, A3 size paper to print the booklet double sided. One of our old inkjet printers was employed, and although registration between the front and back of pages isn't perfect, it's good enough.

You'll see from this photo that the pages don't register perfectly down the gutter.

Claire Mathiesons's Elephant in a Tutu
