Angola, Iran, New Zealand and Syria will play off for positions 13-16 in classification games. Kazakhstan surprised everyone in the host nation by shooting an impressive 53% from long range to defeat New Zealand, 90-83, and move into the second round. Alexandr Tyutyunik continued his strong tournament with 20 points and 8 rebounds. For New Zealand, Brook Ruscoe (20 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists) and Rob Loe (20 points) continued their outstanding tournaments. For Greece, Kostas Sloukas and Evangelos Mantzaris both scored 14 points, and Kostas Papanikolaou scored 13 points. Croatia came from 10 points behind at quarter time to run over the top of Argentina and claim top spot in Group D. Buoyed by a large contingent of supporters, captain Mario Delas was again superb for Croatia with 27 points and 8 rebounds, while Tomislav Lubcic was also excellent with 12 points and 9 rebounds. For Argentina, there were few highlights after quarter time, with only Matias Nocedal (11 points), Lisandro Rasio (11) and Andres Landoni (10) reaching double figures. Spain claimed second spot of their pool, Group C, fighting off repeated comebacks from Canada to record a 82-75 win. Omar Tarek Oraby (15 points, 8 rebounds) Motaz Pellah Okasha (11 points) and Karim Eldahshan (10 points) were Egypt's best and showed promise for the future. After a disappointing first 15 minutes Australia has kept their unbeaten record in tact with a comprehensive 96-54 victory over Syria. Syria closed to 26-40 with 5:14 remaining in the second quarter before Australia finally clicked into gear. Reserve big men Matthew Hodgson (17 points) and Mitchell Young (14) led Australia, and Syria received excellent service from Mahmoud Osfira (20 points), and Tarek Al Jabe (18 points).France survived an early scare to claim second place in Group B. Puerto Rico finished their strong group performance with a comprehensive 86-49 defeat of Angola. Mike Rosario finished with 28 points, while Carlos Lopez has his best game of the tournament with 13 points and 11 rebounds.Day two - Egypt is the talk of the FIBA U19 World Championship

Egypt is the talk of the FIBA U19 World Championship Egypt is the talk of the FIBA U19 World Championship after an amazing come from behind overtime victory over Iran on day 2 in Auckland. The Egyptians trailed by 10 at three quarter time but stormed home behind the play of guard Amro Sherif Abdelhalim, who levelled scores with seconds remaining from the free throw line and scored 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Egypt outscored Iran 11-7 in overtime to win, 95-91. Host nation New Zealand were again the bridesmaids, pushing European bronze medallist Croatia until the final minute, before the class of Mario Delas (31 points, 14 rebounds) proved too much in front of a large and vocal crowd. Missing their starting centre Rob Loe, New Zealand received outstanding performances from Richie Edwards (29 points, 9 rebounds) and Dion Prewster (13 points, 8 rebounds) who had to battle much taller opponents all night. Greece and Puerto Rico put on a shootout and ASB Stadium, scoring 114 points in the first half, before Greece made the big shots in the last quarter to run out 107-98 winners. Leonidas Kaselakis (20 points, 5 assists), Nikolaos Pappas (20 points, 5 assists) and Kostas Papanikolaou (25 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks) made the plays that broke the Puerto Rican resistance. Mike Rosario (28 points), Isaac Sosa (20 points, 7/10fg), Raymond Cintron (15 points) and Jio Fontan (15 points, 6 assists) were superb for Puerto Rico. Australia jumped Spain in the first quarter and never gave the Europeans a chance to get back into the contest. Ryan Broekhoff showed great athleticism on his way to 16 points and 7 rebounds, while Brock Motum continued to impress with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Spain, the best three point shooting team at last years 2008 U18 European Championship, could manage just 1/13 from the perimeter for the first half and 5/24 for the game. Their best contributor was 200cm Toni Vicens with 17 points on 7/13 field shooting. The USA made it clear that France will not stand between them and a world championship medal, taking a 35-20 half time lead behind some intense and athletic defence. The Americans ran out 71-55 winners, with guard Seth Curry leading a very balanced scoring attack with 12 points for the game on 4/7 three point shooting. Gordon Hayward (11 points) and Ashton Gibbs (10) were also in double figures. Andrew Albicy was clearly best for Les Bleus with 15 points including 12 in the first half - 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Alexis Tanghe top scored with 16 points. Argentina recorded a 98-69 win over Kazakhstan, who continue to impress with their efforts despite two losses. Top scorers for the American champions were Luciano Gonzalez (16 points), game one hero Matias Nocedal (14 points, 7 rebounds) and Pablo Orlietti (13 points). Power forward Tyutyunik was the standout for Kazakhstan with 23 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. Lithuania handed Angola a basketball lesson, leading by 16 at quarter time, 37 at half, 48 at the last break and 58 at fulltime. Spearheading the 104-46 victory were Gediminas Orelik and Donatas Motiejunas, who both scored 23 points. Canada defeated Syria 99-53 to record their first win of the tournament, tormenting the Syrians on the boards. The Canadians won the rebound count 53 to 27, and also dished out 18 assists to just 8 for Syria. Jordan Baker, Tristan Thompson and Laurent Rivard all scored 13 points as five Canadian players reached double figures. Power forward Hani Adribe led Syrias major statistical categories with 12 points and 5 rebounds.

Close games highlight opening day Puerto Rico have provided the comeback of the day in what was an exciting opening of the FIBA U19 World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand. The tiny American nation, who placed fourth at the Americas U18 Championship, came from 17 points down at quarter time to shock the European runners up, 80-73. Isaac Sosa (18 points) was the star, hitting three perimeter shots in the second quarter to bring Puerto Rico back into the game. Forward Kevin Young was a constant throughout, recording 20 points, 12 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocks. New Zealand very nearly caused the second upset of the day, but a late travel denied them the chance at a match-winning shot against Americas champion Argentina. The Junior Tall Blacks led by four at half time and six at three quarter time, but three triples in the final period from Matias Nocedal (21 points) were enough to see Argentina home, 66-64. Brook Ruscoe was almost the hero for New Zealand with 22 points. Australia shook a determined Canada behind their forward combination of Cody Ellis (25 points) and Brock Motum (22). Australia started the game with a 15-2 run, and despite the best efforts of Mangisto Arop (27 points) and Canada, the Emus prevailed 88-77. Team USA and France meet on day two, and both made a clear statement with their first up performances. The USA used a 16-1 run at the end of the first quarter to push clear of Iran, and they didnt let up until the final whistle, winning 106-55. France effectively ended their contest with Egypt with an 11-1 run late in the first half to take a 26-point lead into half time, before running out 102-56 winners. Jonathan Bourhis hit five three-pointers on his way to 21 points and teammate Christophe Leanard tallied 18. Croatia shook off a relentless Kazakhstan team to record a 104-74 victory, point guard Toni Prostran leading the way with 23 points. Greece easily accounted for Angola, allowing just 58 points, including only eight in the second quarter and seven in the last, while scoring 101 themselves in a comprehensive victory. Guard Nikolaos Pappas top scored with 20 points on 8/14 field goal shooting, while Miguel Kiala finished with 16 points and 18 rebounds in an impressive display for Angola. Spain warmed up for their big clash with Australia with a comfortable 79-53 win over Syria.

U-19 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP USA takes 28 pt exhibition win over Croatia The USA squad, which does not feature any player with previous true international experience, was paced by Seth Curry's (Duke / Charlotte, N.C.) 16 points (4-7 3pt FGs), Ashton Gibbs (Pittsburgh / Scotch Plains, N.J.) added 15 points and Shelvin Mack (Butler / Lexington, Ky.) accounted for 12 points, six assists and four steals. Outrebounding Croatia 43-25, John Shurna (Northwestern / Glen Ellyn, Ill.) led the way on the glass with eight rebounds to go with nine points, and Howard Thompkins (Georgia / Lithonia, Ga.) added seven boards and seven points. "It went pretty well. It took us a while to get used to the conditions and getting used to playing overseas basketball, but I think we got better as the game went along and were making strides right now," said Curry. "Theyre (Croatia) a real big team, really physical, its not what were used to, but thats what we needed for a scrimmage game to get used to the conditions and the referees and stuff like that. Id say the game definitely benefit us." USA head mentor Jamie Dixon likewise agreed that the scrimmage was good preparation for the United States squad. "We had a little slow start today against Croatia, theyre a good team, good size, shoot the ball pretty well. But I thought we responded, got better as the game went on and guarded some things that we havent played against. Weve only been together about 10 days, so were learning as we go. I thought we picked up some things, got better as the game went on, and finished pretty strongly. This was a pretty good performance by a lot of our guys."

We jotted down the pre draft picks of some of the prognosticators to see how they faired against one another seems fair they keep score and standings in the league. All those listed selected either 11, 12, or 13 of the correct players in the lottery (the most prominent misses were Jrue Holiday, Ty Lawson, James Johnson, Jeff Teague, and DeJuan Blair) but who got them in order ?
