5th July 1898 James Hunter born, Balfron, Scotland. (1919 & 1924-25)Scottish international left back who was on the club's books without ever making a first team appearance. Returning after playing for both Motherwell and Falkirk, Hunter appeared as cover for first-choice Frank Hudspeth, later moving to play in the USA.
1946 Arthur Horsfield(1969)
Spotted playing youth football in his native Newcastle by Middlesbrough, centre forward Arthur spent six years at Ayresome Park from 1963, helping them return to Division One. Signed as striking cover by Joe Harvey for £17,000 midway through the 1968/69 season, Arthur made an instant impact with a goal within three minutes of his debut, away to Manchester City. Heavy rain at Maine Road however saw that game abandoned before half time, meaning that the goal and Arthur's debut were wiped from official records. He did find the net against Burnley at home and was rewarded with a starting place in the Fairs Cup home win over Setubal. Goals at Spurs and at home to Sheffield Wednesday followed, but by the time United claimed silverware in Budapest Arthur was a Swindon Town player after the Wiltshire side celebrated promotion to Division Two by breaking their transfer record - allowing United to recoup their outlay. "King Arthur" twice won the Anglo Italian Cup with Swindon, before moving on to Charlton Athletic in 1972. A stint at Watford was then followed by a loan to non-leaguers Dartford. Settling in nearby Gravesend, Arthur then worked for the Royal Mail.
1969 Michael O'Neill born, Portadown, Northern Ireland. (1987-89)
Striker who netted thirteen times in his first season after arriving from Northern Irish side Coleraine, and was seemly destined for a big future at Gallowgate under the guidance of his fellow countryman Willie McFaul.
The highlight of Michael's debut season was a memorable hat-trick in the 4-0 stuffing of Luton Town @ SJP, that featured Kenny Wharton's infamous sit-on-the-ball episode. And the first of 31 full international caps (4 goals) followed in February 1988 against Greece, but injury and illness were to badly affect his career at SJP. After a difficult second season, O'Neill moved to Dundee United as Jim Smith overhauled his squad in preparation for life in the Second Division. His next appearance at SJP saw him playing for the smoggies in a 1992 pre-season game, although he looked a shadow of his former self and failed to win a permanent deal. Later transfers took him to Hibernian, Coventry City, Aberdeen, Reading, Wigan, St.Johnstone, Portland Timbers (USA), Clydebank, Boston Bulldogs (USA), Glentoran and finally Ayr United on a part-time basis, also working as a financial adviser. A first step into management saw O'Neill work as Cowdenbeath coach, before taking over as the new Brechin City boss in 2006. Two years later he moved on to take over at League of Ireland side Shamrock Rovers.
1980David Rozehnal born, Sternbeck, Czech Republic. (2007-08)
Central defender pursued and acquired by Sam Allardyce from Paris St.Germain at an eventual cost of £2.9m in June 2007. Debuting for us alongside Steven Taylor in an opening day victory at Bolton, 25 games later (7 as sub), Rozy had followed Sam out of the SJP exit, joining Italian side Lazio on loan. Czech international Rozehnal had expressed dissatisfaction with being utilised in full back and holding midfield roles by both Sam & KK. Concerned that not playing regularly in his chosen central defensive role would hamper his chances of appearing at Euro 2008, Rozy got off to a good start in Rome, retaining his place for all three Czech games - although they were eliminated in the first stage. Having made his Lazio move permanent - with United recouping their fee - Rozy then lost his place in their starting XI and was linked with moves elsewhere in 2009. 1987 Death of Bobby Ancell, 76. (1936-44)
1988 Death of Jack Little, 83. (1927-28)
1983 Jonas Gutierrez born, Buenos Aires.(2008-present)
A player who promised so much when making his competitive debut at Old Trafford on the first weekend of the season, having made a switch from Real Mallorca. However that early form and strong, direct running in possession became less and less effective following an injury layoff after just four outings, all under Kevin Keegan. 33 appearances in all competitions (25 starts) failed to produce a single goal for the player who was nicknamed "Spiderman" for his scoring celebration in Spain - although he did find the net for Argentina while a Magpie.
And although remaining popular among some supporters, a lack of goal assists over the campaign led to accusations of the "nice hair, but flatters to deceive" variety. There was to be a sting in the tail for United, who initially let it be known that they had captured Jonas on a free - only for a subsequent court hearing in Spain to rule that a fee of £5m was payable - half to Real Mallorca, half to former club, Velez Sarsfield.
1952 Eastern Province (a) 5-1 (1-0) Friendly Davies 3, G.Robledo, Mitchell
1984 It was Bob Dylan's turn to tread the boards as St.James' Park hosted another live concert. For those of you who doubted our level of sadness /attention to detail...here's his set list from that night:
Highway 61 Revisited, Jokerman, All Along The Watchtower, Just Like A Woman, Maggie's Farm, I And I, License To Kill, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Tangled Up In Blue, Simple Twist Of Fate, Masters Of War, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Enough Is Enough, Every Grain Of Sand, Mr. Tambourine Man, Girl From The North Country, It Ain't Me Babe, Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, Tombstone Blues, Blowin' In The Wind.
And here's the gig poster....
Carl Cort signed for £7m from Wimbledon; 4 years, 24 games started, 8 goals. Or put another way, a million quid per league goal. Not the greatest investment ever made by the club. Even King of the Crocks, Duncan Ferguson managed 12 goals from 32 starts in less than three years.
Then, lo and behold an almost miraculous return to fitness for Cort as he moved to Wolves. In just 3 and a half months he managed 16 games and 5 goals.
2003'Readers' of the red-tops may have been getting their hopes up after seeing Freddy Shepherd's son, Kenny, pictured with Ronaldinho leaving a nightclub.
However, the Brazilian was in London to promote the computer game FIFA 2004, produced by EA Sports who had a link with Kenny Shepherd.
Former Magpie Brian Tinnion returned to SJP and signed 21 year-old reserve midfielder Bradley Orr. Scouser Bradley moved to Ashton Gate having been released by United and so far has made 101 starts and 23 sub appearances in defence and midfield for Bristol City.
The 2006/07 season was an eventful one for Bradley. Not only was he red-carded for attempting to head-butt his own player, he was sentenced to 28 days in jail for his part in an incident outside Bristol nightclub 'Romeo Browns'.
Orr returned to the first team after serving 14 days. PS: he is related to Joey Barton...

AA recovery denial News of the alleged interest in buying Newcastle United among the Malaysian business community is now being reported there, with one possible bidder issuing a denial.
The CEO of AirAsia was quick to dismiss any involvement in a takeover, following claims in a Malaysian newspaper that the airline were part of the consortium.
London calling
For ****s sake no, Joe
"I have gone from being bad to being much better than I was. I feel as fit as a fiddle. I love the game and am desperate to get back into it sooner rather than later.
"Mike knows I'm still available. I'm not sure how far down the road they are to selling it. I spoke to Mike last week and he told me there were a few people interested.
"If they don't and haven't got anyone else, then I'd love to return. My opportunity would be to support Mike and Derek.
"I enjoyed my time up there and enjoyed the people. I thought I did very well when I was up there. I'm pretty sure the run we were having at that particular time would have seen us through, but that's too late now."
Recent quotes from ex-Magpies boss Joe Kinnear as reported over the weekend. Haven't we suffered enough?

Subsequent claims were made that billionaire businessman Ananda Krishnan was the figure behind the bid, but that remains to be acknowledged by either side.

1932John Thompson born, Newcastle. (1950-57)Goalkeeper who acted as an understudy to both Jack Fairbrother and Ronnie Simpson at SJP, making his debut in a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford in October 1954. Moving on to Lincoln City, John remained at Sincil Bank until 1960. Returning to his native North East, he later played in the non-league for Horden Colliery Welfare and Annfield Plain. One of a number of former Magpies to work as a bookmaker in later years, John lived in Forest Hall.
1981 Stuart Boam left United to manage Mansfield Town, one of his former clubs. United received £20,000.One former United and England midfielder confirmed the signing of another, as Celtic boss John Barnes hired Terry McDermott. His role? "social manager".2000 Hired hand and well-known football fans' champion Rogan Taylorheld a press conference at the Gateshead Marriott hotel to launch Newcastle's plans for a Fan Forum. The move came in the wake of the Toongate and Save our Seats episodes, which had further damaged the club's standing amongst supporters and the media. Unfortunately what became the Fans' Liaison Committee proved to be a damp squib and was ultimately wound up by its frustrated members.
2002 Newcastle announced that defender Gary Caldwell would be linking up with Coventry City. He went on to make 41 appearances in league and cup for the Sky Blues. The Magpies also confirmed that they had released reserve striker James Coppinger, who had made one senior appearance for the club.
2004 What Nicos Dabizas called the "most important moment of his life" as Greece defeated host nation Portugal 1-0 in the final of Euro 2004.
(We can't help wondering where escaping from his car seconds before it burst into flames ranks in his important moments list....)
Sadly for the former Toon man, he watched the game from the subs bench as he had for the rest of Euro2004 - never being called into action by Greek coach Otto Rehhagel, despite having recovered from the groin injury that saw him lose his place in the run up to the finals.
2005 Newcastle returned to pre-season training to the news that Craig Bellamywouldn't be appearing as was previously expected. Officially he was given an extra week off, along with those players who took part in post-season senior internationals (Jean-Alain Boumsong, Jermaine Jenas, Shay Given, Stephen Carr and Hugo Viana). However, the extra week gave Bellamy the chance to conclude a permanent transfer away from St.James' Park. Celtic still had high hopes, but it was David Moyes and Champions League qualifiers Everton who were at the head of the (short) queue for the Welshman. Blackburn were still nowhere to be seen.
Former Magpies goalkeeping coach Terry Gennoe was the latest recruit to Glenn Roeder's coaching staff. The former Bury, Halifax, Southampton and Blackburn 'keeper spent three years at United from 1997 when appointed to a coaching role by then-boss Kenny Dalglish (whom he followed from Ewood Park). During his first stint at United, Gennoe worked with Shay Given and Steve Harper, as well as former Magpies Shaka Hislop and Pavel Srnicek. He followed Dalglish to Celtic in 1999 where he was part of the staff with Terry McDermott during the ill-starred John Barnes era. Gennoe remained at Parkhead with Martin O'Neill and then worked in his own goalkeeping school at locations in the West of Scotland. The 53 year-old native of Shrewsbury replaced Academy coach Adam Sadler, who had been handed temporary first team coaching duties by Roeder during his time as caretaker.
2008 Steven Taylor signed a new three year deal, keeping him at the club until 2011. Negotiations had been ongoing for nearly a year.

So why didn't Fergie want you in 2005?
There's only one United...apparently
Surely the most unlikely football story of the close season came to a speedy conclusion on Friday afternoon, when signed for Manchester United. The free agent passed a medical and was paraded after a move that may not win him a new legion of fans, but further lowers his standing on the red half of merseyside. And after being greeted with virtual indifference when playing at Anfield in a black and white shirt, his return there next season promises to be a good deal livelier - assuming he's not injured again.
Owen commented that:"It feels great. I never even had it in my wildest dreams really but then I got the call from the manager to come and meet him.
"It was a shock but I'm obviously really happy and things have moved quickly since then.
"I probably had a poor spell up at Newcastle but prior to that, my career was very good and I'm sure a top club like this can re-ignite my career. Hopefully I can score a few goals and help the team to more success.
"It's early days but when you think about United, you automatically think about winning trophies, the stadium, the massive fanbase.
"A lot is made of it and probably a lot will come out in the coming months and years but I certainly don't feel like I'm injury prone.
"I'd like to think that everyone was quite surprised at how my medical was. I knew I would pass my medical, I've obviously passed them before. My fitness is fine."Four years and £40m+ dismissed in three words "a poor spell". It's of course no shock to learn that his fitness is fine, having been on an elongated warm up since 2005. Owen doubtless regrets ever setting foot on Tyneside; well, that's at least one thing we can agree on....
The two exceptions are Huddersfield (pay on the night) and Utrecht (no ticket details released as yet). are now taking bookings for coach travel to Darlo (£15), Huddersfield (£22) and Dundee United (£26). Ring them on 0191 261 5005 or visit the shop.
Club coaches Chris Hughton, Colin Calderwood, Paul Barron, Richard Money and Alan Thompson remain in charge of the team until further notice. Fitness coaches Mark Hulse and Robbie Elliott are present also, but working their notice - so we have coaches counting down the days to their departure, as well as players...

Bidders
BBC Radio Newcastle reported on Thursday evening that MD Derek Llambias had shown representatives of a Malaysian bidder round the club earlier in the day. It's now come to light that a number of the current first team were introduced to the delegation as they toured the training facilities at Darsley Park. Subsequent claims were made that billionaire businessman Ananda Krishnan was the figure behind the bid, but we don't believe that to be the case.Former striker: MO OT MOT The most unlikely football story of the close season (save for him buying NUFC) took a step closer this morning, as Michael Owen was photographed arriving at Manchester United's Carrington Training Ground. The 29 year-old striker was there undergo a medical prior to reportedly signing a one year "pay as you play" deal. Incredible. PS: comments from Ian Rush:"People have knocked Michael Owen all his career but he comes back bigger and better. People said he was finished years ago but he's a fantastic player who comes back stronger and better.
"It won't worry him, I know the way he is and he doesn't have to prove anything anyway. It's a chance for Michael to get back and score some goals. He'll get chances for Manchester United and will score goals."Wise words there from a man who, like Owen, has first hand experience of earning money for old rope at SJP.

3rd July 1988 James Troisi born Adelaide, Australia.(2005-08)
Arriving as a youngster from Australia with his family in tow, this attacking midfielder spent three seasons with United, graduating from the Academy side to the reserves. His first reserve goal came against Liverpool in October 2006 and within a month he was named by Glenn Roeder on the substitutes bench for United's UEFA Cup tie in Palermo. Under Sam Allardyce, Troisi featured in five pre-season friendly games before the 2007/08 campaign began, returning to the first team picture when named as a sub for Kevin Keegan's first game in charge, v Bolton. That came after Troisi had appeared for Dutch side JC Roda on a brief trial, with no new deal on the horizon for him at SJP. An Australian youth international, Troisi was selected for the U23 side and helped them secure qualification for the Beijing Olympics. His first full international cap followed in March 2008 against Singapore, but within weeks he'd been released by Newcastle - his final reserve outing for the club coming in the Northumberland Senior Cup Final against Blyth Spartans @ SJP. That summer saw him sign a three-year deal with Turkish side Genclerbirligi and feature for the "Olyroos" in the Olympics, although his side were eliminated in the preliminaries.
1995 Then boss of Turkish side Galatasary, Graeme Souness concluded a £2.35m deal with Aston Villa for striker Dean Saunders. Ten years later, the pair were briefly reunited at SJP when Saunders joined the Newcastle coaching staff. 1998 More penalty shootout drama, with France wisely having already substituted new Magpies signing Stephane Guivarc'h before extra time in the Stade de France. Victory over Italy saw the home nation progress into the World Cup semi-finals.
1999 Newcastle midfielder Dietmar Hamann still hadn't found a new club but a return to SJP seemed impossible, after comments made in the media.
Meanwhile, Nobby Solano's Peru beat Bolivia to progress in the Copa America. Sub Zunica came on, promptly scored but was sent off in an eventful five minutes.
2006 Michael Owen travelled to the Colorado clinic of renowned knee specialist Doctor Richard Steadman ahead of surgery. And the player himself played down talk that he was in need of attention to both his anterior cruciate and medial ligaments:"We've had all the scans done over here, basically we're thinking from what the scans say that it's a cruciate.
"It's a rupture, you can't see the cruciate on the scan so it's obviously floating about somewhere in the knee, but apart from that there is minimal damage.
"There is nothing else that needs operating on, so that is a big bonus. Not so much of a bonus in terms of time limits, but just in coming back where you have just one injury to come back from and not plenty of things going on in your knee."
2007United began pre-season preparations with a week in residence at the Balance Resort, near Stegersbach in Austria. The trip was for fitness and team-building only, with no friendly games scheduled.

1920 Laurie Nevins born Gateshead. (1940-47) Left winger who appeared for the Magpies in wartime football and also played as a guest for Middlesbrough. Serving in the Royal Navy as a submariner, he later played league football for Brighton & Hove Albion & Hartlepools United.
1939 Gordon Marshall born, Farnham, Surrey. (1963-68)A 22 year career between the posts for Gordon, who despite hailing from the South East of England was brought up in the Edinburgh area. Marshall joined Heart of Midlothian in 1956 from Dalkeith Thistle, having first appeared for another amateur side, Balgreen Rovers. Seven years later he swapped Tynecastle for Tyneside, replacing Dave Hollins and remained with us until 1968 when he moved on to Nottingham Forest after having lost his place to Willie McFaul. After only a year at the City Ground though, Marshall returned to Scotland and turned for out for Hibernian, Celtic, Aberdeen and finally Arbroath, where he retired in 1978. Marshall then returned to his adopted home of Edinburgh and ran a newsagents and barbers shop. His son, Gordon junior, was also a goalkeeper and made over 650 appearances for East Fife, Falkirk, Celtic, Kilmarnock and numerous other clubs. Gordon senior's other son was defender Scott, who appeared for Arsenal, Brentford and numerous other clubs - his only senior Gunners goal coming against Newcastle at Highbury in March 1996.
1959 Mirandinha born, Fortaleza, Brazil. (1987-90) He wasn't from Argentina but he wasn't f***in' brill either. Possessed a lethal shot but the danger was usually to spectators not goalkeepers. Still, his continual pouting and the filthy looks he engendered from Paul Goddard were worth the admission fee alone.
For the younger viewers out there, he was like a watered-down Tino but it's difficult to look back on his black and white days without smiling.
His scoring record wasn't bad in a rotten side and he did score twice at Old Trafford and memorably at Anfield, where he celebrated unashamedly in front of the Kop. However, his greatest moment was probably the time he kicked then-Wimbledon goalkeeper Dave Beasant up the arse then ran away.... Mira came to this country with very little knowledge of the English language, but rapidly increased his vocabulary, thanks to a kindly local interpreter. His name? Paul Gascoigne. Many are the hilarious tales of the beleaguered Brazilian attempting to go about his daily life in shops and bars etc. innocently addressing people with what turned out be a stream of obscenities. And if anyone ever gets the chance to snatch a few words with our former manager Jim Smith aka Bald Eagle, you must ask him about Mira and the £17k loan for the pig farm....then stand back and watch that vein on his head start pumping furiously. He must have loved him deep down though - bringing Mira's son Ernandes da Silva (also a striker) to Fratton Park on trial in November 2002.
1950 Jackie Milburn made his World Cup Finals debut for England as Walter Winterbottom reshuffled his team in the wake of the USA defeat. Spain won with the only goal in a tight match in Rio De Janeiro, with Milburn unluckily seeing a goal chalked off.
1952 Border Province (a) 10-0 (5-0) FriendlyG.Robledo 7, Davies, Foulkes, Crowe (pen) 4,000
1954 England bowed out at the quarter final stage of the 1954 World Cup losing 4-2 to Uruguay in Basle. It was to be the final time United's Ivor Broadis played for his country.
2001 Mick Wadsworth departed from SJP to take up the offer of Assistant to new Saints Stuart Gray. Did he jump or was he pushed? Who knows, but his influence on negative team tactics and poor foreign signings had attracted criticism from fans and the media. Bobby was furious that his right hand man had gone and lambasted news reporters in a fiery press call, but few others shed a tear.
United's first major summer signing was Real Mallorca's Argentinean winger Jonas Gutierrez, who was nicknamed Spiderman.
The winger signed a five year deal for an undisclosed fee, but the move later saw him present in a Palma court as a £5m transfer fee was levied by a judge who brushed aside claims that he was a free agent.
Highpoints were goals that beat Chelsea and Spurs in the FA Cup, but those were isolated highs for the mostly non-flying Dutchman, who didn't need to tell Toon fans they

Sporting "a dark tan", Duffer was "thrilled" to be there and "partied the night away" with pals. Beats drinking on Osborne Road... Whether the players will be doing some limbo to get in shape remains to be seen, but away from the training pitch though, limbo is as good a description as any. There's nothing new to report, with the BBC unable to add anything to their earlier story of a Freddy Shepherd-led takeover and Sky filing the thinnest of "progress" reports. As and when there is something confirmed as happening then we'll report it - but frankly trying to make sense of the ongoing machinations of the rumour mill is now doing our heads in. PS: Our reaction to the £60m Shepherd bid story:
Eddie exit confirmed Newcastle defender David Edgar has now agreed a four year deal to join Premier League newcomers The 22 year was a free agent and the Magpies will receive an unspecified amount in compensation, due to his age and the fact he came through Newcastle's Academy system. That figure would be decided by a tribunal if the clubs were unable to reach an agreement themselves. Edgar's 23rd and final senior appearance (including 10 as sub) came in the final game of last season - with a red card at Villa Park meaning that he'll be suspended on the first day of this season, when Burnley face Stoke City. 2018/2022 Host City launch:Bid on the Tyne

The 24 year-old Republic of Ireland international winger moved to Easter Road exactly two years ago following his release by Newcastle, but has failed to make an impact in the SPL and constantly struggled for form and fitness.

Centre half signed from local side Dudley Welfare who made his senior Magpies debut in an 8-2 home win over Everton in 1959. In and out of the Magpies side, relegation in 1961 saw him a regular choice in the early part of the season back in Division Two, unfortunately putting through his own goal in a 2-1 home defeat by Liverpool.
Losing his place, Heslop returned to the top flight when agreeing to sign for Everton, failed to break into the first XI at Goodison and made just ten appearances in four years. Moving on to Manchester City in 1965, George won a Second Division Championship medal in his first season at Maine Road. A key member of the side that captured the First Division title thanks to an epic 4-3 win at SJP in 1968, Heslop also collected League Cup and European Cup Winners Cup medals in a City career that ended in December 1971. Moving to South African side Capetown City on loan, he returned to England later in 1972 and appeared for both Bury and Macclesfield. Managing Northwich Victoria for a spell, he then entered the licensed trade with bars in the Manchester area. He later became a social worker and passed away shortly after his retirement, in 2006.
Playing for his hometown club Ajax from the age of seven, Kluivert scored on his senior team debut in 1994, capping a first season with the winner in the Champions League final against AC Milan. By 1997 he was a Milan player, but within a year had joined Barcelona and shown good form for the Netherlands in both the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 tournaments - sandwiched by a Spanish league title win. By 2004 though he was a free agent following his release from Barcelona and made his 79th and final international appearance against Shay Given's Ireland in a friendly. Within two months he was a club colleague of Gives at United, having sat unused on the bench for the Netherlands at Euro 2004. Kluivert had been feted when playing and scoring for Barcelona at SJP in a pre-season game back in 2002, also finding the net both home and away against Newcastle in the Champions League that season. Chairman Freddy Shepherd later revealed that he'd tried to sign Kluivert at that time and saw him as Shearer's Toon successor. Lacking fitness, a first competitive outing for Kluivert saw him manage the last three minutes of a 2-2 draw at the smoggies, with his first goal coming in the 4-2 defeat at Villa that ended Sir Bobby Robson's reign. Scoring both goals in a home win over Israeli side Hapoel Bnei Sakhnin then got him off to a good start with new boss Graeme Souness and he then netted against West Brom in the next game, playing alongside Shearer. After scoring twice in the return game against Sakhnin (after earlier losing a £4K diamond earring on the pitch in training), Souness tellingly commented:
"The only doubt about Patrick is his desire. He's a world-class player in anybody's book. If Patrick wants it, Patrick will get it because he's got that much class, athleticism and ability that it can only be his state of mind which will prevent him from becoming the best striker in the world in the next four years."Those doubts were justified as within six months the striker left England, having started just 14 league games. Groin problems saw him miss games and training, but didn't seem to affect his off- field "activities". Highpoints were identical headers to beat Chelsea and Spurs in the FA Cup, but those were isolated highs for the mostly non-flying Dutchman, who didn't need to tell Toon fans they "never saw the best of him". After 13 goals from 37 appearances, United passed on their option for a further two seasons of flabby Paddy magic - a decision greeted with a sigh of relief by most locals, save for those with a commercial interest in the fleshpots of Jesmond.....His next port of call then proved to be the coaching staff of Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, although he retains ownership of a nightclub in Barcelona (Carpe Diem) and appeared for Barca in an old boy's game in March 2009.Paddy was certainly a good club man - if you're talking about the nocturnal variety with bars, rather than the sporting type. As a Newcastle player though, he was one of the biggest let-downs of the modern era.
A Premier League tribunal found in favour of Newcastle United and ruled out a move to West Ham for Olivier Bernard. Credit was due to Freddy Shepherd for sticking to his guns and not allowing West Ham or Bernard's agent to engineer an unscrupulous bit of business.
OB had uttered these untimely words before the deal was done and was subsequently forced into a climbdown:
And the West Ham boss at the time who was forced to deny accusations of
an illegal approach? Glenn Roeder.Free agent Lee Bowyer put pen to paper on a four-year deal at SJP, having passed a medical the previous evening.Having only managed to add Scott Parker to his squad in the close season, Graeme Souness confirmed that
an approach to sign Manchester United's Alan Smith had been unsuccessful.
