Updated: July 2, 2009, 9:39 AM EDTBears to give QB Jay Cutler new contract?
The Bears will look to do something long term with Jay Cutler, perhaps during the season. They'll need to make that move in October probably in order to take advantage of the cap room and apply money to this season. It makes perfect sense. Yes, Cutler remains under contract for three more seasons. But he has a $12 million roster bonus in 2012 that the team would probably like to avoid. Forget the idea of waiting to see how Cutler performs. They got him for the long haul and they're going to invest in him for the long haul. But quarterback deals take time to put together. Why not start during training camp? -- Chicago Sun-Times
Titans LenDale White loses weight, says it won't be back
LenDale White has come too far to blow it now -- he promises. Since the end of last season, the Titans running back has remained on a strict diet and been loyal to the team's offseason conditioning program. The results have shown up in his shrinking waistline, as well as on the scale -- he weighed in at 229 pounds last week. But with minicamps now a thing of the past and training camp not set to begin until July 31, there's plenty of time for him to balloon, of course. Heaping barbecue plates will certainly be calling his name at Fourth of July cookouts … "It's not going to happen,'' White said, shaking his head at the suggestion. "I am not going to let it all go to waste, not the way I feel. My body feels good -- my knees, my ankles, everything feels great out there. And I am trying to keep it that same exact way. So whatever I have to do, I am going to maintain. And when I check into camp (my weight) won't be nothing over 230.'' -- Tennessean
M's hope to use Bedard as trade chip?
Erik Bedard is in the final year of his contract, and the Mariners have discussed a new contract with his agent, but only casually. If healthy, Bedard could be a trade chip next month before the deadline. If he's not healthy, teams are unlikely to offer much, if anything. -- Tacoma News-Tribune
Arizona hasn't ruled out trading Dan Haren
Though a trade seems unlikely, the Diamondbacks do not appear to have ruled out the idea of moving Dan Haren. It likely would take a package similar to the one they gave up two years ago to pry him away. Haren is signed through 2012 with a club option for 2013. -- Arizona Republic
Cavaliers reportedly make a play for Ron Artest
According to several league sources, the Cavs are attempting to land Houston Rockets free-agent forward Ron Artest, and the pitch included a meeting with LeBron James on Tuesday night in Los Angeles as both were in Southern California for various events.-- Cleveland Plain Dealer
Sources: Raptors after Knicks David Lee
Capping a whirlwind 24 hours to open the negotiating period, league sources say Toronto is trying to obtain David Lee, an energetic rebounder who is a New York Knicks restricted free agent. The sources couldn't say whether the move on Lee would be a straight offer or whether it would be a sign-and-trade transaction with any of Toronto's current free agents. -- Toronto Star
Meth mess could put brakes on Jeremy Mayfield's NASCAR career
Jeremy Mayfield has for years been trying to be a major league stock car driver. He's come close in the past, but, now with the allegations of drug use - and a NASCAR official saying Wednesday his drug test turned up methamphetamines - he may forever be known more for what was in his urine than his skills behind the wheel. Until Wednesday, NASCAR officials steadfastly refused to reveal what the substance was that got him in this pickle. Now that the case has ended up in federal court, though, all bets are off. "We will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jeremy Mayfield did violate the NASCAR substance abuse policy and tested positive for methamphetamines," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston told reporters Wednesday. It was the latest step in a verbal battle that has been ongoing since Mayfield was suspended, and threatens to mar him for life. Likewise, it's the first time under NASCAR's new drug-testing policy that a top-level driver has been driven out of the sport because of a positive test result.
Dale Jr.: This season was a big failure for us
Dale Earnhardt Jr. asked what his feelings will be at the end of the season: "When the race is over at Homestead, what am I going to be feeling about next year? ... Am I going to go 'Man, we didn't really fix it yet'? Or am I going to go 'Holy [expletive] man, we're gonna be [awesome] next year.' I hope I feel good. I want to. I'm optimistic, but I'm also worried. ... The season wasn't a success. Even if we win three or four races the rest of the year, I wouldn't count it as a success. This season was a big fail for us. I carry all the responsibility as the driver. ... We're starting to look and feel more like a top 10 team. We're not. I wouldn't even label us a top 10 team yet, but we're starting to look like one. And that's a long, long ways from winning races and dominating." -- Orlando Sentinel
Cowboys Tony Romo: no marriage rumors with Jessica Simpson
Jessica Simpson was greeted by a slew of photographers when she first arrived in Washington D.C. Tuesday. She was jokingly asked if she's waiting for Tony Romo to win a Super Bowl before she agrees to marry him. Simpson (who turns 29 July 10) replied, "He'll win. Tony is playing with Tiger tomorrow. That's all I'm thinking about." Romo recently addressed marriage rumors. There are "none that I can think of," he told Entertainment Tonight. "I'm sure you guys can tell me something new here soon enough, though."-- Us Magazine
Former NBA star faces foreclosure on home
Former NBA star Latrell Sprewell faces yet another foreclosure lawsuit. Sprewell has failed to make mortgage payments since November on a home on E. Hampshire St. in Milwaukee, Harris National Association, formerly Lincoln State Bank, alleges in a lawsuit filed last month in Milwaukee County Circuit Court. The bank wants to foreclose on its $920,000 loan and have the home sold. Sprewell has not responded to the lawsuit. City records describe the property as a 5,200-square-foot, 70-year-old mansion with six bedrooms and four fireplaces. It is assessed at nearly $1.1 million. Sprewell, 38, who five years ago reportedly spurned a three-year, $21 million contract offer as insulting, has amassed a history of financial trouble since his 13-year NBA career ended in 2005. -- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
U of Miami safety Wylie decides to transfer
A day after the University of Miami said it expected safety Joe Wylie to remain with the program, Wylie has decided to transfer. Coach Randy Shannon indicated earlier this week that Wylie was still on campus and was expected to remain at UM. But UM said Wednesday that Wylie has decided to transfer to Tennessee State. Wylie, from Lauderdale Lakes Boyd Anderson, played only one game during his freshman season and wanted to go to a school where he would get more playing time.
Florida State fights NCAA to keep 14 football wins
In the rebuttal it filed on Wednesday to the NCAA, Florida State argued once again why it shouldn't be forced to vacate victories in the aftermath of a widespread academic fraud scandal and the university described as "woefully inadequate" the NCAA Committee on Infractions' rationale that led to the disputed penalty. As it did in its original appeal, Florida State maintained that innocent coaches and athletes should not be punished for the actions of the 61 athletes and three former university employees who were implicated in the scandal, at the heart of which were improprieties in an online music course. If the Committee on Infractions' ruling stands, victories from FSU's 2006 and 2007 seasons would be vacated. At stake are two national championships in men's track and as many as 14 victories in football. If FSU is forced to vacate the football victories, then it would likely end Coach Bobby Bowden's pursuit of retiring as the most victorious coach in major-college football history. -- Orlando Sentinel

No comments yet.Personally I am tired of hearing anything about Brett Favre. I just wish he would go ahead and retire, and quit using his fame for headlines. One of these he will get hurt and wish he did retire.

Updated: July 1, 2009, 9:34 AM EDT1246 commentsFormer NFL coach: Michael Vick will end up with Dolphins
Longtime former NFL head coach Dennis Green went on Sirius national radio this week and said the following: ``I have a hard time believing that Michael Vick is not going to wind up with Bill Parcells, simply because [Parcells] has that creativeness that says no matter what it takes, he's going to find a way to get Michael Vick. Now, whether it means convincing the commissioner or whatever it takes, Michael Vick is probably going to wind up at Miami because of the fact Bill Parcells is Bill Parcells.'' OK. Deep breath. Where to begin? Green had one thing right. It is a fact that Bill Parcells is Bill Parcells. As for the rest of it, ol' Denny appears to be roughly as unhinged as he was in screaming, ''They are who we thought they were!'' during an infamous postgame tirade later played for laughs in a Coors Light commercial. -- Miami Herald
Broncos Brandon Marshall To Police: I Hate Denver
Denver Broncos Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall said he wanted to be traded more than 18 months ago and said he "hated Denver," according to documents obtained by the CALL7 Investigators. Marshall was arrested on suspicion of DUI on Oct. 22, 2007, and according to the police report, he started verbally attacking the city of Denver and saying he wanted to leave the Broncos. "I hate Denver. I hope I get traded. I hate this f******* city," an officer wrote in the police report. -- ABC 7 News (Denver)
Red Sox looking to trade Takashi Saito
According to officials with other clubs, the Red Sox have made it known they would be willing to move reliever Takashi Saito, but despite a strong first half (2-1, 3.25 ERA, 26 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings) interest is said to be minimal. The elbow may have scared off some teams. Another factor limiting interest is that Saito has extensive incentives in his deal. On top of a $2.5 million base salary, Saito already has earned $1.5 million in roster bonuses and could earn another $1 million. Also, if Saito appears in 50 games - he had been in 28 before last night - he'll make another $500,000, with additional $500,000 payouts for each five-game increment after that. The Sox have signaled to teams that they may be willing to take on some of that bonus money if it means a better return, but to little avail. -- Boston Herald
Cubs Zambrano jokes about Red Sox, Dodgers trade
Carlos Zambrano had some fun with an unscientific Chicago Tribune fan poll in which 57.2 percent of respondents said he should be moved, as Phil Rogers suggested in a column Monday. "Fine, trade me to Boston," Zambrano said. Last weekend Zambrano said he would play for only two other teams than the Cubs -- Boston and the White Sox. But apparently he changed his mind about the White Sox now that he knows pitching coach Don Cooper doesn't care for him. In truth, the Cubs can't send Zambrano anywhere without his approval. "Got the no-trade clause, man," he said. Any other team in the National League he would consider being traded to? "The Dodgers," he said. Why the Dodgers? "Can you see me in Hollywood?" he said. "Me and (Sylvester) Stallone? Rocky VI."
Lakers Lamar Odom drawing interest from Spurs, Suns
San Antonio and Phoenix are interested in trying to sign Lamar Odom. Both teams are trying to clear salary-cap space to see if they can get a deal done with Odom, who is looking for at least a four-year deal worth an average of $10 million a year. -- LA Times
Stephon Marbury: stars shouldn't sign with Knicks
Stephon Marbury, who becomes a free agent again today, believes star players should be cautious about signing with the Knicks because of Mike D'Antoni's offensive scheme and the way the organization treats people. "I wouldn't want to play in that system,'' Marbury told The Post. "That system can't win championships. You can't win championships if you don't talk about defense. In Boston, the coaches even play defense.'' Marbury said he believes being exiled for four months "mentally damaged'' him and effected his Boston performance. "I knew it wasn't about money,'' Marbury said of his exile.
Martin Truex Jr. replacing Waltrip next season?

Richard Petty: NASCAR not sport for women
Sales are down, attendance is off and ratings have slumped in NASCAR. Help, however, might be on the way wearing high-heeled shoes. Danica Patrick, a tiny tempest of personality, marketability and skill, is looking to move into NASCAR next season, creating a whirlwind of optimism for a sport that's desperately looking to get back on track. The sanctioning body has tried several ideas to stir interest. The first step was double-file restarts. Changes to the Car of Tomorrow are likely. And getting Dale Earnhardt Jr., the sport's most popular driver, back on track is another priority. Few argue that Patrick wouldn't be an instant fix, shooting television ratings into overdrive. Even if there are some old-school doubters. "I just don't think it's a sport for women, and so far, it's proved out," said Richard Petty, a team owner and NASCAR's all-time leader in victories. "It's good for them to come in. It gives us a lot of publicity. It gives them publicity. But as far as being a real true racer, making a living out of it, it's kind of tough." -- Florida Times Union
NFL QB signs autograph on cocktail waitress' arm

National Football League is a non-profit?
The new union leader's quiz of some of the best-educated professional athletes in the country proceeds like this: "How many people here know the National Football League is a non-profit?" DeMaurice Smith, the longtime Washington, D.C., lawyer asks 75 members of the Seattle Seahawks. No hands rise. "How many people here know that the NFL has a special antitrust exemption granted to them by Congress?" Again, no hands. "We all understand the difference between a strike and a lockout?" Silence and blank stares. -- Wall Street Journal
Maryland's Friedgen says he might stay on past contract
University of Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen says he might want to remain in his post for up to five more years if the team is performing well - a move that could complicate the school's coaching succession plan. Friedgen, 62, said in an interview with The Baltimore Sun that he might want to stay beyond the three years for which he is under contract. On Feb. 6, the university signed an agreement promising to pay $1 million to offensive coordinator James Franklin - who has turned down coaching jobs at other schools and in the NFL - if he is not elevated to head coach by Jan. 2, 2012. Athletic director Deborah Yow said it is premature to speculate about when the coaching change would occur. She said Friedgen and Franklin, 37, have a close relationship and suggested the two could work out any issues related to the timing of Franklin's promotion. "We don't intend to ever pay the million dollars. Things are going to be good," Yow said. -- Baltimore Sun
Okie State coach Mike Gundy hasn't decided if he'll call plays again
So it goes for Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy, who has yet to announce his intentions when it comes to moonlighting another season as the play-caller for the Cowboys' lethal offense. Life has never been dull in Gundy's four seasons running the program at his alma mater. Whether he's maniacally screaming at the media or calmly operating in his own world during a game, Gundy has a way of drawing unwanted attention to himself. The former Cowboys quarterback obviously knew his press conference rant after the 2007 Texas Tech game wouldn't go unnoticed. But he had no idea his sideline demeanor during the 2008 season would become so controversial. After the numbers OSU's offense amassed with Gundy personally directing the action, you would think any controversy would be over. And you would be wrong. -- Tulsa World
