I’m up way too early! That’s what I get for falling asleep before 9pm. I woke up at 6AM to Paul in a Hawaiian shirt that looks like Wash from Fireflyleaving for work. He never wears Hawaiian shirts but I guess he’s being festive today.
I also woke up to an e-mail from Hannah from Frothy zine who made these awesome badges that you can put on your websites, your blog, you We Make Zine Site, or your zine. Feel free to download them and do with them what you will!

So, we have made it to July and it is International Zine Month!
What are you doing to celebrate? Here are some ideas listed on the IZM site:
Make a 24 hour zine. Set up a zine reading, a zine swap, a cut and paste party, a zine fest, or even a simple zine workshop at your local library or community center. Write a letter to every zine you read, leave your zine at random places around town like buses, bathrooms or universities. Order zines directly from the creator, make a shirt with iron on letters that says “ask me about zines”, make buttons with phrases like “zines saved my life” or “do you read zines”. Send out zine fliers with your mail or leave them around your town. Approach shops in your town about carrying zines, donate to zine libraries, start a zine library, and the list goes on!
Here’s what I have been doing:
-wrote long over due letters to zine pen pals.
-thought about doing a 24 hour zine about beer.
-wished lots of people happy International Ziner Month.
-Worked on the International Zine Month site trying to collect all the zine activities in July in one place.
-Put two buttons up on my Etsy site for 20 cents each. One is a design by Emma Jane Falconer (my Etsy team zine co-leader) and says “Up For Trades” to be worn to zine events so people will know you are trade friendly. The other is part of my “Ask me about” series and says “Ask me about zines”.
-Also I’m an organizer for the Portland Zine Symposium. Tables are almost filled up. Saturday is completely booked and there are a few half tables for Friday and Sunday I think .We are also looking for volunteers and some more workshop leaders.
Ok, back to work for me!

I recently got back from a visit to Hobart, Tasmania. What I love about Tasmania is their amazing fresh produce and seafood. But what I love most about Hobart is a place called Machine laundry cafe (where you can do your laundry and have a coffee while you wait) and their amazing breakfast menu.I had this dish four times over the week I was there. The hot cakes were always cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of banana and ricotta oozing out of each hot cake. Forget maple syrup, what makes this dish is the BUTTERSCOTCH SAUCE. Oh my god, that sauce is like liquid heaven. Combined with a big dollop of DOUBLE cream makes makes me want to weep with happiness after each mouthful. I cannot find the words to describe the deliciousness.

Just outside of Solvang, CA, there's a roadside ranch where you can pick your own blueberries - you go to the stand, they hand you a little tin bucket and point you to the hugest blueberry field you've ever seen. We spent about an hour filling up our little bucket (and our bellies - I swear, I must have eaten my weight in berries) with about a billion different varieties - little ones that had a flowery taste, big tart ones, medium-sized sweet ones - who knew that there were that many different kinds of blueberries? posted by NeilI went to Los Angeles, had a sort of a working holiday, came home, and am writing. Working out a lot with the trainer, got a new trampoline. The cherry tree is covered in cherries, and the wild raspberries (red and black) are out in the woods, and I find them when I walk the dog.Nights here are filled with fireflies. Steve Brust came over for dinner tonight and brought his puppy, and we talked about stories and writing until late. It's a good world. That's about it for excitement at this end. Lots of people have written in asking stuff about me and Amanda, and I don't really know how to answer them. Either they're really nice and pleased for us and encouraging and don't need answering, or they're the kind of things that leave me deeply puzzled, and to which the only responses are "Isn't that a bit personal?" or "Probably none of your business I'm afraid," or even "Why would you write things like that?"Hello Neil,Why don't you blog more often?Just a death wish I guess. Your blog is a wonderful thing to read.I have a rare case of skin cancer and your blog cheer me up!Mostly because I have less to say right now, I think. Or at least, I hate repeating myself. The blog's eight years old, and over one million three hundred thousand words long. That's a lot of things. People write me lots of questions still, but so often they're questions that have already been answered on the blog, usually at some length -- the kind of things that make me think that I should spend time I could spend writing again (say) how you get an agent in, instead, organising things and getting a really useful FAQ up and running, or just a way of finding things, particularly advice on writing.Obviously, I'm sorry you have a rare case of skin cancer, and I would be just as sorry if it was a common sort of skin cancer. So here, to cheer you up and fulfill your dying wish: a blog, and a link to an interview http://www.wmagazine.com/w/blogs/editorsAnd finally, there are now more than 666,666 people following me on Twitter. So we had a party. It's still ongoing, the party, over at http://bit/ly/666party and to join in all you have to do is upload a photgraph of you and a Balloon. And once 600 people showed up at the party, the webgoblin made this: a mosaic.blog/2009/06/29/neil-gaiman-on.htm and also to an amazing Daily Telegraph piece in which a bunch of writers and artists suggest books for younger readers http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/b ookreviews/5720639/Summer-Reading-for-Ch ildren-Adventures-to-enchanting-worlds.h tml. Todd Klein, letterer extraordinaire has the fourth in his series of prints out. The art is by J. H. The whole talk, with Karen Berger's introduction and all, is up now on YouTube, and is embedded here for your pleasure. It's an hour and a half.

Okay. I'm having a problem. As much as I'd hate to admit: I hate onions. I don't even like them a little, and I can't even handle eating foods with them in them. It's not a mind thing, like "ew gross onions yuck". I genuinely dislike the taste of onions. However, a LOT of recipes call for them. What I need to a vegetable to replace it, if there is one. So can you help me with this? I need something that had a strong flavor that can replace onions in just about anything you can think of (save like...onion rings. I'll just omit and have the fries). Maybe this is just a pet peeve of mine... I'd like to see what the rest of Portlanders think, since we're essentially a giant beer garden of a town!
The Scenario: four of rive guys go to a bar, club, etc. Someone buys a pitcher... should the table automatically assume the pitcher is for the entire table or should person A merely get a few glasses for himself and maybe a friend? Personally, I am of the school of thought that a round is bought for the table by one person, then someone else grabs a round, etc. Am I wrong?
Is there an established etiquette which MUST be followed? Are there rules stating one must establish the rules of etiquette before going out? Will Lassie ever find Jimmy?

I posted this to the cooking community, and someone suggested I share it with you guys. I tried this weird recipe this morning that is strangely delicious and I thought I'd share it with you guys. It's ugly, it's murky, but it is surprisingly good. If you like Tootsie Rolls and lemonade, you'll like this recipe.
Ingredients:
Juice from 1 lemon, per serving1 cup water, per servingSugar, to tasteChocolate syrup to taste (the drink will be muddy; I used about 2 Tbsp)
Combine and stir. Serve over ice.
The original version of this called for a 12 ounce lemonade concentrate, mixed with water according to directions, then 1/4 cup chocolate syrup (or to taste). But I didn't have that handy, I just wanted to taste it, and I really prefer fresh lemons. So that's what I got! I know it sounds awful, but it's really mild and refreshing, with a 'toasty' note of chocolate at the end. Highly reccommended.
Also, since that appears to be a similar theme here, you should check out my journal for more weird-but-delicious combinations I try. I bet a lot of them will be right up your alley. :3

Hi Folks..So, I need some advice. My partner's employer has switched to Kaiser, and I am looking for a referal for a doctor within the kaiser system here, that is clued into trans issues. I have found a name in a few places listed as a trans-friendly privider within their system. The name is Dr. Stephanie Detlefsen. Anything? Also, does anyone know about their inclusion/exclsuion policies with trans patients. I learned a fair amount about trans exclsuion plicies with Pacificare and UnitedHealth recently, but know nothing of Kaiser. I do remember a friend of mine that I lost touch with, getting his top surgery covered in the kaiser system, through a decent doctor. I can't find him for the life of me, anywhere. Thanks mmuch!devon

The beauty and abundance of my CSA produce always makes we want to arrange the vegetables into a lavish still-life. This time I actually did it! In this photo you can see chard, dandelion greens, cucumbers, Norland potatoes, Detroit beets, candy onions, a green cabbage, a head of green lettuce, a head of magenta lettuce, a bunch of redbor kale, and four huge zucchinis. [Note: the contents of the fruit bowl are not from the CSA.]Another angle, plus a shot of how I used some of these veggies.

I don't suppose any of you would be into swapping genre novels?I love to read sci fi, fantasy, romance, paranormal stuff, urban fantasy, YA, all sorts of genre stuff -- typically that targeted for a female audience, but not exclusively so.& I was thinking it would be a better deal & more fun to just trade books with someone with similar tastes than it would be to sell my used books at small fractions of their value.Any takers?Current Mood:

Hey. I'm a freelance writer looking to beef up my homepage content a little. For one section of my site, I had the idea to write up/review unique businesses out of Portland—think the locally made bamboo bicycles profiled on the bikeportland blog not too far back and things of that nature. Something that could use some coverage. I know Portland does cupcakes and coffee, but those are so common. Does anyone know of someone with a really original product or service? if so, jot it down here or email me at dree[at]tenkone.com . Oh yeah, PG-13 and under stuff preferred. Thanks!

I have balance and mobility issues that make riding a regular bike impossible for me. I just picked up a older upright tricycle on craigslist, it's a 3 gear with dual rear driven wheels. I would love to put a child seat on it to take my 3 year old daughter on rides with me. I know that there are seats like the WeeRide and IBert that mount on the front handlebar stem, are there any others (either front or rear) that anyone else knows of? Has anyone been able to pull a bike trailer w/ an upright trike?Just trying to find out what my options are. Thanks, Rebecca

Hi all! I just found this community today and have had fun browsing the recipes and bookmarking the ones I want to try! However, I do have a request I'd love to get some different opinions on!My boyfriend and I were given a GIANT bag of potatoes and a GIANT bag of onions yesterday! This is exiting, because I love both those foods, and homegrown = heck yes I'll take it! Except they are, as I mentioned, HUGE bags and I'm afraid they'll go bad before I can use them! So a two-fold question:Is there a good way to store a large amount of both those foods so they last for awhile? Currently they're in the cabinets around my sink with a humidity-catcher thing to keep it less humid, but I don't have containers big enough for them all, so they're in plastic bags. Any advice? And the cooking question: anyone know any recipes using a large number of either potatoes or onions or both? I want to use a lot all at once, and the added benefit of having leftovers that last for awhile would be awesome! My small problems: I have no oven! I do have a microwave. It is supposedly a microwave-oven, but I can't figure out how to work it (ahaha... >.>) My bf has a tiny toaster oven as well. I am also allergic to tomatoes, so if they can be substituted or left out that would be nice! Finally, I live in Japan, so the simpler the recipe, the more chance of me finding all the necessary ingredients! I've been searching for recipes for about an hour, but a lot of them I can't do simply because I know there's no way I'll find everything I need, and I'm not a good enough cook to know what can be left out/substituted.Any help would be awesome! And, uh, if you live near Gunma and want some fresh veggies I have more than enough to share!

Hi everyone - I have a strange question which may make me appear a supreme novice but oh well, was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I am not much of a baker, but I can follow a recipe pretty well, so I decided to make some cupcakes for my friend's birthday. I had the idea that I wanted to make chocolate chocolate chip cupcakes because she loves chocolate.......so I started doing searches on the internet for a recipe.. how come there are no recipes for chocolate chocolate chip cupcakes? I really don't want to improvise because, like I said, I am not much of a baker and am prone to ruining baked goods.Shall I just make chocolate cupcakes and add some chocolate chips? would that work?

Anybody know if there's a good site to find quotes from the show on? Be it the official CBS site or a fansite. Anything. I've seen some of the IMDB ones but I kind of want more. Guess I could go about it the hard way and rewatch a bunch of videos online and just write them all down.

Curious, any of you fly, drive, cruise or submarine off to another foreign city on vacation? But then quarter yourself in the sleaziest, most disdainful section just to save money, yet you had a good time?

OK what are you guys making for food this weekend? We're having a get together of approx. 16-18 people and attempting to figure out the menu of what we should cook/bring/have others bring to cook. What are you suggestions for easy-ish meals? We will have a complete indoor and outdoor kitchen :), a crock pot and 2 refrigerators (possibly one smoker).Thinking of potato salad (homemade), deviled eggs, maybe shrimp and couscous, snacks etc...

O ye! O ye! By special dispensation of the pan-galactic committee on NNLC, by supreme high royal order of the Dowager Empress of NL herself, and by rule 43 of the internet, I hereby open the DP chapter of the TuNNLC. I was going to go out, but my ass-grabbing couch has a death-lock at the moment. I'm watching Helvetica. *in spot-on King Julien voice* You may envy me now.

Am I the only one who thinks online voter registration is 1) stupid and 2) not going to change voter turnout? From what I've read while on long and distant travels to the lands south of our border, Oregon is close to passing such a law.I just think that if you can't find it to go to any greater number of places where voter registration cards are or feel you don't have the time to take the 2 minutes with a person registering voters perhaps you should maybe...not vote. I mean, you don't even have to leave your house to vote in Oregon. Technically, you don't even have to leave your house to register to vote already. You can already get your voter registration card from online, and just MAIL it in.Shouldn't voting and registering take a bit more effort than the effort it already takes to be blissfully uninformed?
