October 29A video report of a motorist in the Houston area who spotted an odd animal in the road and thought it could be the legendary Chupacabras. So he took a video of the dead animal. But it turns out to be a coyote with a serious case of mange. Speaking of which the International Cryptozoology Museum is looking for a taxidermist for a Chupacabras...err coyote... that someone has donated to the museum: CZ Museum Taxidermist Volunteer Needed NowA black triangle over St. Petersburg, Russia. Three lights in the form of a triangle floated above apartment buildings. One of the many witnesses to the event was able to capture it on a cellphone video. Apparently Russia is showing some interest in the UFO phenomenon with a prominent geologist speculating we are descendants of Mars and brought to Earth by aliens some 10,000 years ago. Oh, and by the way, remember the story about the object that crashed and caused a fire in a huge crater? Well, the Latvian UFO revealed to be PR trick. And at DeVoid, Billy Cox asks: Whatever happened to Klayman?Witches' Brews The Daily GrailAn excerpt from Paul Devereux's The Long Trip: A Prehistory of Psychedelia discussing the little-known role of hallucinogenic substances by medieval witches, including a rather eye-opening theory as to the real use of the witches' broomstick. Did witches use broomsticks to apply hallucinogens to their vaginas?A follow-up to a report that originally appeared in the first issue of EdgeScience about the discovery of a bald-headed, pink-faced songbird discovered in Laos by Iain Woxvold of the University of Melbourne. When asked--Do you ever follow up native reports of creatures that might be new to science?--Woxvold replied, in part, "To help us with some of the more cryptic species, yes indeed, we do rely rather heavily on the extensive knowledge of local hunters..."The Coming of the Sky Dancers ThunderboltsAuroras today are a relatively peaceful phenomenon, usually appearing as gently dancing curtains of light, a reddish ‘cloud,’ or spectacular rays of light. But the so-called Carrington Event of 1859 shows that auroras can be extremely violent events. Indeed, various peoples have preserved memories of the potential intensity of the polar lights, suggesting "an intimate connection of the auroras with divine beings or ‘ancestors’ and times when the world passed through a phase of destruction and renewed creation." Something to think about as scientists begin to ponder the possibility of extremely violent solar storms triggering geomagnetic disturbances on a massive scale. Also, a review of a new DVD called Symbols of an Alien SkyIn a report dating back to the mid-1960s, a central Illinois woman recalls her sightings of a large, white creature that she described as hairy with skinned features. She first saw the being during a walk home at night as a teenager, then later narrowly escaped the pursuing creature after a face to face encounter through a window. Years later she encountered the creature again in Kentucky as a married mother of two kids. Can the same creature have traveled hundreds of miles through the years to find the same woman? Elsewhere, the post from January on The Mount Vernon Monster has been updated, as several more sightings have been reported.Taking a Scientific Approach To Spooky Herald SunOn the research carried out by the Rhine Research Center into psi abilities, and its executive director, Sally Rhine Feather, daughter of Joseph Rhine, founder of the Duke University parapsychology lab now known as the Rhine Center. "Whatever the psi mechanism, it's probably built in as a warning," states Feather.Neanderthals 'Had Sex' With Modern Man The TimesWith the completion pending of the Neanderthal genome sequence, the director of genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology says that it's all but certain that modern humans and our cousins the Neanderthal engaged in sexual acts, though it is as yet uncertain if offspring resulted. The data of the sequence should eventually point to a solid answer and serve to quell controversy that some discovered fossils possess both human and Neanderthal characteristics despite both species DNA being considerably different. As a Slashdot poster commented: "What remains a mystery is what Paleolithic brewery provided the catalyst for these stone age hook-ups."Girl's Confession Stuns Worshippers The SpectatorA bizarre and grisly account of human sacrifice in Ghana left worshippers of a local shaman's church aghast. Olivia, a self-proclaimed witch with a penchant to bestow hardships on her family through her sorcery, had sent her mother to a witch camp where she was slain and feasted upon by the queen witch of the cult as well as by her daughter. Claiming witch powers that were handed down to her at the age of five by her grandmother, Olivia pleaded with her mother for help over the years, feeling the witchcraft within her getting stronger, but to no avail. Her mother's death was brought on by the demands of the witch camp to provide new "meat" for the many feasts performed by group--an activity that seems ongoing and widespread.
