Ritual bath to honor couple murdered in Mumbai terror attack By Mary Gail Hare | The Baltimore Sun
A ritual bath, steeped in symbols of Judaic faith, will remind those who immerse and pray in its waters of a young rabbi and his wife killed in a terrorist attack in India a year ago.
On the tiled walls of its mikvah, a deep, warm-water bath that promises spiritual purity to Jewish women, the Lubavitch Center in Pikesville will hang a marble plaque that reads, "May their merit be a blessing for all those who immerse in these waters."
At 11 a.m. Sunday, in a public ceremony, the center will rededicate its Mikvah Mei Menachem in homage to Rabbi Gabi and Rivky Holtzberg. The rabbi's sister, Rikal Kaler, belongs to the congregation.
"This wall of remembrance is a message of life, survival and hope, all of which the mikvah symbolizes," said Rochelle Kaplan, center director. "It is most appropriate to remember the Holtzberg couple at this facility, because their life exemplified purity, self-sacrifice and the very best of humanity.".
Halacha of the Day: Lefties and Righties in Halacha (10) The one who removes the Sefer Torah from the Aron to hand it to the Chazzan for the Torah reading takes it out with his right hand and then gives it to the Chazzan who also holds it in the right hand while carrying it to the Shulchan. If however the one who is taking out the sefer Torah is left-handed, he can take it out with his left hand to give it to the chazzan, since it takes just a few moments. However, the chazzan, even if he is left-handed should carry it to the Shulchan with his right hand, since everyone sees him carrying it and they do not necessarily know that he is a lefty. If his right hand is weak and there is concern that he may drop it if he carries it with his right hand, then he may carry it with his left hand. (Shaarei Ephraim 10:2)
For Kapporos it would seem that a left-handed person should use his left hand to hold the chicken (or money), just as he would for any mitzvah that he performs. (See Pri Megadim/Aishel Avraham 206:6, Mishna Brura 206:18, Kuntras Ish Itair 50)

New York Times reports on Chabad.org's employee's search for Manhattan apartment Rooms for the Observant By JOYCE COHEN - NY TIMES
IT dawned fairly quickly on Rabbi Motti Seligson and Shterni Bukiet Seligson that “one-bedroom apartment” was hardly a meaningful descriptor.
They began apartment hunting last winter, soon after their engagement, assuming they could spend around $1,500 a month. After all, they were seeing Manhattan one-bedrooms listed for that price. Those, however, turned out to be more like divided studios.
At the top of one dark staircase in Kips Bay, they bumped into each other while looking at the bedroom. There was no closet, just a kind of ledge on the wall.
So their price range rose. And rose. “It was traumatic,” Rabbi Seligson said. “You live, you learn,” said his wife. continue...

Soul stirs for guidance in daily lives By LISA ANN WILLIAMSON
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Beatrice Smith scans the news and the world around her, notices lawlessness, chaos and greed and wonders how to remain spiritual through it all.
It boils down to a one of the many questions relating to the function of the soul, which will be explored in a six-week course offered through Chabad Lubavitch of Staten Island at the Joan and Alan Bernikow Jewish Community Center beginning Nov. 4.
"It all relates to how we transform the physical to the spiritual," said Mrs. Smith, a Willowbrook resident who has completed other courses on spirituality. "We believe we have to bring Godliness into this world, lifting the world to the spiritual level so that it's more holy and we are all closer to G-d." continue...
Questions About Using a Shabbos Elevator Several weeks ago, a new halachic ruling was issued stating that it is forbidden to use a Shabbat elevator, and is even an issur mid’Oraisa. The ruling was signed by Rabbi Yosef Sholom Eliyashiv, Rabbi Shmuel Halevi Wosner, Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, and Rabbi Nissim Karelitz.
This aroused much controversy, and in response the director of the Institute for Science and Technology in Jewish Law, Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Halperin produced a booklet called “Habracha.” Rabbi Halperin stated clearly that any elevator that is authorized by the Institute does not pose any problem at all. LIVING WITH MOSHIACH #1615 R. Yitzchak Aizik of Homil, a chasid of scholarly renown, once said: "When Moshiach comes and the dead will be resurrected, among them will rise the Patriarchs, the leaders of the Twelve Tribes, Moshe and Aharon, all the prophets, all the tannaim and amoraim, and the geonim [great Torah sages] and tzadikim of all the generations. And whom will they seek out to rejoice with? The simple Jews."
A Gemara Celebration in Tzefat This week, the participants of an evening shiur at the Shivat Habanim shul in Tzefat celebrated the completion of Maseches Eiruvin.
Many members of Anash and local residents gather for the shiur every evening and study Gemara and Halacha together. The shiur is arranged by Rabbi Avraham Ochanona, a former chief of the army’s Northern Command, who is a supporter of the Chabad community. Rabbi Ochanona is also responsible for the city’s Chevra Kaddisha.
The siyum, which took place on Sunday, included a delicious festive meal. The speakers were Rabbi Chaim Bazak, Dayan at the Tzefat Beis Din, and Rabbi Mordechai Bistritzky, leader of the Chabad community in Tzefat and the head of the local Kashrus department. (SOURCE: COL.ORG.IL)
