Updated: 11:02:PM Thursday, Jan 08, 2009 Anti-Semitic vandals again target Jewish preschool By Daniel Wolowicz camarillo@theacorn.com
Anti-Semitic graffiti was found Mon., Jan. 5 at a Jewish preschool in Old Town Camarillo—the second time in less than a week that Nazi-related vandalism was seen on the campus.
This is the third time since 2007 that racist vandalism was found at the preschool.
According to police, a parent at the preschool saw swastikas and other hate-crime graffiti at the Gan Camarillo Preschool, 2222 E. Ventura Blvd., early Monday morning.
Rabbi Aryeh Lang, head of the Chabad Camarillo that runs the school, said investigators are not sure whether Monday's vandalism was new or if it was left over from a Dec. 31 incident, in which vandals used black permanent markers to draw swastikas on the sidewalk in front of the Jewish preschool.CONTINUE...

The Rebbe's Advice #25 - Returning to Kollel after long interval In memory of Rabbi Gavriel & Rebbetzin Rivkah Holtzberg HYD - Shluchim to Mumbai, India
Most people do not have the peace of mind needed to learn in Kollel after being involved in some other work, including communal activity. Therefore, I do not recommend that you go back to Kollel.

Boys from the South Come to Rishon Letzion The Ohr Malka Talmud Torah in Rishon Letzion, part of the local Chabad educational network, accepted children from the Chabad school in Kiryat Gat this week. The children have been traveling there on an organized bus every day. Apart from continuing with their studies, the children have received much moral support and enjoyment from their temporary location.
As part of the fun, the children enjoyed a special activity day, with trampolines, arts and crafts, bongo drums, and a professional puppet show.
The Kiryat Gat municipality and the local welfare department provided funding for the activities and are doing whatever they can to ease the children’s situation. The mayor is expected to visit the children and see for himself the hospitality of their peers in Rishon Letzion, who are now learning in cramped conditions.
In addition, children from Ashkelon and Netivot are also joining the classes in Ohr Malka’s cheder and girls’ kindergarten.
(SOURCE: COL.ORG.IL) The Talmud Torah’s administration in Kiryat Gat would like to thank the staff at Ohr Malka for providing classroom space, shiurim, and study material for over 40 children.Last chance for birthing classes before Pesach This Sunday morning begins the informative, super-thorough, and practical birthing classes by Birthworks-trained instructor, Shayna Eliav.

You Can Go Home By Larry Gordon
The hall closet still has a box of mothballs sitting on the shelf directly over the coatrack. As a result, it still harbors this pungent but otherwise sartorially healthy scent that tells you that the clothes in here are well protected. This is the hallway closet in my mother’s house in Crown Heights in Brooklyn. I’m there often—though not often enough—usually to pick my mom up before Shabbos or drive her back home after Shabbos, but rarely, if ever, am I there to spend a Shabbos there myself these days.
In fact, I can tell you exactly how long ago it’s been since I spent a Shabbos in the house I grew up in. I can easily recall the last time I spent a solid 24 hours in the home where I gave up my baby bottle as a toddler, the home where I had my bar mitzvah and even the shalom zachor of my firstborn son. Up until last weekend, it had been 14 years since I made Shabbos in that house.
With my mother recently out of orthopedic rehabilitation after breaking her femur, instead of moving her around to one of our (her children’s) homes, we’ve begun a rotation of joining her for Shabbos in her home. For days I felt that coming back after all these years was not going to be a simple, matter-of-fact event for me. More than anything else, I knew that I’d end up grappling and trying to make peace with my new/old “frozen in time” surroundings. I felt that I’d have to try to reconcile this contradictory feeling that here in my childhood home time has both come to a complete halt and also marched on at an unrelenting pace. continue...

Mothers from the south will receive special treatment and will be allowed to stay in the hospital for three days instead of the usual two.
To ensure the welfare of any mothers preferring to stay away from the south, the authorities at Assaf Harofeh have asked families in Kfar Chabad to host some of them in exchange for payment. Kfar Chabad is very happy to provide assistance for free, and comfortable accommodation adapted for caring for newborn babies has been prepared. Nonetheless, no new mothers have chosen in this option in the meantime, preferring to return to their families.

(IsraelNN.com) Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told foreign ambassadors in Israel on Thursday that Israel's campaign in Gaza is part of the international effort against terrorism. She told the ambassadors not to equate Israel with the jihadist Hamas terrorist organization.
Speaking with the ambassadors at the Foreign Ministry's humanitarian aid command center, Livni said that Operation Cast Lead is a "struggle... against terror and it cannot end in agreements with it. In order for there to be quiet here one must defeat it, not come to any arrangement with it."
Addressing the specific possibility of negotiations with Hamas, the Foreign Minister said, "Don't expect that we will find a way to create an agreement with Hamas. It won't happen. The only agreements we can make are among us against terrorism. This war we are waging is part of the war waged by the international community throughout the world and I expect of you not to equate us with Hamas."
The immediate benefit of the Gaza campaign, Livni explained is that it made it "clear" to Hamas that "the equation has changed. Until now they attacked us and now they understand that when they attack us, we respond and will not accept a situation in which our citizens are under attack." continue...

Chabad Richmond Hill opens new building TORONTO — After 11 years in temporary quarters, Chabad Lubavitch of Richmond Hill is gearing up for an inaugural banquet Jan. 15 and an open house three days later, featuring food, crafts, music and dancing at its new 10,000-square-foot building.
The Chabad Romano Centre is located at 10,500 Bathurst St.on a 2.5-acre tract of land south of Teston Road.
Land developer Mario Romano, who is also contributing to the cost of the synagogue, donated the land to Chabad. Then, in February 1984, one article announced “New family arrives here,” with photos of Rabbi Moshe Wilhelm, his wife Devorah and their two young children, Motti and Simi. They’d just spent two years in Australia and came to Portland at the request of the New York Chabad Lubavitch Rebbe.

California: County approves up to $140 million in bond issuances for expansion of Chabad Hebrew Academy SDDT.com
Two proposed tax-exempt bond issuances valued at up to $340 million were approved on consent by the board of supervisors Tuesday but how much demand there will be for this debt is an open question.
The instruments include up to $200 million in order to refinance and refund costs associated with the new 330-bed inpatient tower at Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa; and up to $140 million for an expansion of the Chabad Hebrew Academy plus the addition of a dormitory for at least a couple hundred students at its Poway location at 10785 Pomerado Road.
...The $140 million Chabad bond issuance for the Hebrew Academy is by Walnut Creek-based California Statewide Communities Development Authority, another nonprofit corporation. The proceeds of the bonds are to be used for acquisition, construction, improvements, furnishing and equipping the academy and its dormitory
Along with the dormitory, the work is to include a student center, new classroom facilities, a gymnasium and a pre-school. Chabad officials couldn't be reached for comment.
The Chabad Hebrew Academy is an entity of the Friends of Chabad Lubavitch, San Diego, a California corporation. The entity said on its Web site that it has 20 community centers, multiple school and pre-school facilities and a summer camp in the county.continue...
Denial of bail to Rubashkin fueling legal controversy Ben Harris - JTA.org
NEW YORK (JTA) -- Nearly from the moment federal immigration agents raided the Agriprocessors kosher meat plant in Postville, Iowa, on May 12, supporters of the company alleged that it was being unfairly singled out by the government and unjustly excoriated in the media.
Nearly eight months later, a judge's denial of bail to the plant's former manager, Sholom Rubashkin, has drawn the attention of several national Jewish organizations and provided those who see anti-Semitic motives in the government's behavior with their best ammunition.
At a hearing Nov. 19 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, federal prosecutors argued that Rubashkin was a flight risk in part because Israel grants automatic citizenship to Jews. In a subsequent filing with the court, the government claimed that Rubashkin has “de-facto dual citizenship.”
In two separate rulings, Magistrate Judge Jon Scoles sided with the prosecution and ordered that Rubashkin, who faces an array of charges related to his management of the packing plant, be detained until trial. An appeal is pending before the chief justice of the Iowa court, Linda Reade. continue...
