County seek a professional Library Director to plan, coordinate, direct and supervise our county
library services. Providing services in a Headquarters (Lenoir) and two Branch Library locations
(Hudson and Granite Falls) the Director manages the Library budget of approximately $1.4
million and a staff of 20 professional and paraprofessional employees.Plans, coordinates, directs and supervises county Library operations, services and staff. Prepares and manages the departmental budget. Selects and trains new employees and evaluates employee work performance. Recommends, interprets and enforces system wide policies and procedures; selects print and non-print library resources; prepares and submits financial and statistical reports; attends County Commissioner meetings when necessary or appropriate and Library Board of Trustees’ meetings; and represents the Library at professional meetings and in the service community. Murrey Atkins Library’s Special Collections Department at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking an Audio/Visual and Oral History Collections Archivist to promote, preserve, and manage the department’s Audio/Visual and Oral History holdings.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or other relevant master’s degree required
- One to three years of professional level experience, in special collections departments in libraries or archives, or equivalent combination of specialized training through formal education and internships.
EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrable experience working with film, video, photographic, and/or audio materials
- Demonstrable experience with digital video and audio equipment, files and formats, compression codecs, and web delivery
- Demonstrable experience in the application of metadata standards such as Dublin Core, AACR2/MARC, TEI, or EAD
- Demonstrable experience in the design and creation of web pages
- Demonstrable experience with digitization issues, processes, and techniques.
- Demonstrable experience in organizing materials, establishing intellectual control, and providing access through the use of appropriate standards in information technology.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, ATTRIBUTES
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently and collaboratively as a member of a group in a changing environment
- Working knowledge of preservation best practices and standards for film, video, photographic, and audio materials
- Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, and trends in archival administration and in historical scholarship, methodology, and the use of sources.
- Ability to relate to users at a variety of educational levels.
- Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting unit policies and procedures.
- Record of successful performance of duties in prior job(s).
- Knowledge of the history of North Carolina or the South preferred.
- Ability to climb ladders and to lift boxes weighing up to 40 lbs. to retrieve materials for researchers.
- Evidence of professional growth and mastery of ASERL competencies relevant to the specific job assignment.
DUTIES:
- Manages audio/visual holdings in department’s collections, including analog and digital film, video, audio, and photographic materials
- Works with colleagues in department to ensure proper storage and handling of audio/visual materials
- Provides guidance for preservation of and access to audio/visual materials, including film, video, photographic, and audio materials
- Seeks out and applies for external funding to pursue preservation and access projects for audio/visual materials
- Manages Oral History Collection. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- evaluating methods to organize and provide accessibility to the collection;
- coordinating continued development and maintenance of the New South Voices oral history database and general web pages for the Oral History Collection and for other collections as assigned, working closely with the library webmaster and the digital services librarian;
- establishing priorities for collecting interviews and identifying potential interviewees - advising individuals outside the department on all aspects of developing and managing oral history projects and on technical details involving equipment, etc.
- supervising part-time workers.
- Actively promotes use of all the department’s collections by seeking out university faculty and students, historic site and museum personnel, and members of the scholarly community and general public who could benefit from the department’s services.
- Provides instructional classes on campus and makes presentations to non-university groups, incorporating the advantages of technology with traditional techniques.
- Prepares displays, including exhibits on the Web.
- Shares responsibility for reference service in Special Collections on a more or less equal basis with other department faculty and staff.
