International Institute of Space Law

Website of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) a membership organisation founded in 1960 and based in France. The purpose of the IISL is cooperation with national and international space law organisations and the development of space law. The site provides organisational details on the IISL and information on the Institutes activities which include annual colloquia and joint symposia with the European Centre for Space. Standing committee reports, an online newsletter and conference and workshop proceedings can be downloaded from the site. Recent topics covered include capacity building in space law and the legal implications of space applications for climate change. Details and videos of the winners of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition can be viewed online and a bibliography of space law, providing a cumulative index of the IISL annual colloquia from 1958 to 1994, are also offered. EMLF membership is drawn from law firms, law schools, mineral companies and trade and professional associations supporting the mineral industry. The site provides a directory of members, details of educational events and a page of related web links. Extracts from EMLF white papers covering topics such as water, timber, synthetic fuel, oil and gas operations, mineral valuation, electric power and coal supply contracts, can be downloaded from the site. These papers are chapters from proceedings of the Annual Institutes of the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation and full text versions can be purchased online. It is maintained by Rolf F. H. Schroeder, an independent researcher in Bremen, Germany. He writes "The development of these systems in different parts of the world has been accompanied by theoretical and empirical work of social scientists who analysed these social innovations from a variety of different angles. The Safer streets website is an interesting example of the use of web 2.0 technology by British government departments to encourage citizens to participate in community government. Launched in 2009, it enables local residents to use the website to tell their local authority and police service where they feel unsafe to go out. The website provides background information on the project and access to the mappings. These show contributions from citizens and safety agencies. The types of information include comments on anti-social behaviour, crime levels and street lighting. There are links to official crime prevention and reporting agency websites. Added: 2009-11-04

LSE Library (also known as the British Library of Political & Economic Science) is the working Library of the London School of Economics and Political Science and one of the largest libraries in the world devoted to the economic and social sciences. Its flickr photostream provides free access to digital images of some of the political posters from its archives. These include a small collection of Soviet political posters from the 1920s, as well as collections of British political posters, London County council election posters. The British political party posters include materials from the early 20th Century (1905-1910) from a range of parties including Liberal and socialist. This website, Virtual New York City (VNY), from the City University of New York, aims to provide free online access to a multitude of sources on the history of New York. Although still in development as of October 2009, the site provides information on all aspects of New York's history, from the political and economical to the social and environmental. There are currently four exhibitions on the site which are all under the broad heading of 'Disaster'. They focus on: storms; riots; fires; and epidemics. Information is presented under each of these headings and includes detailed and interesting discussion on some major events. There is, moreover, the ability to search the VNY archives by keyword, and a number of links to other sources detailing New York's history. Established in 2007 at James Cook University, Australia, "in a unique tropical location adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Ancient Rainforests", the activities of the Centre for Tropical Tourism Studies include education; tailored business-oriented courses; development programs; consultancy; tourism and hospitality research; and the "facilitation and distribution of tourism and hospitality information through this site, conferences, symposia, seminars and workshops".
Its website gives details of areas of priority research, current projects and downloadable summaries of completed research on backpacking, wildlife tourism and volunteer tourism. Copies of the full reports are available for purchase. The website also contains information about the centre's partners, business activities, courses, and forthcoming and past conferences. The latter feature downloadable presentations from 2007 and 2008 on the conference topics of small to medium-sized firms (SMEs) and synergies between tourism and hospitality. This website applies the HACCP (Hazard Analysis by Critical Control Points) system to organic food production. It brings together project studies and responses on consumer concerns and preferences about organic production systems, and information about typical production chains for seven representative commodities in regions across Europe; the commodities studied are milk, wheat bread, cabbage, tomatoes, eggs, apples and wine. The project objectives include describing procedures of the organic production chain for the selected products, identifying main areas of consumer concern in regard to the quality and safety of certified organic food products, and formulating the results of the studies to produce safety criteria for the certified organic market. The website provides a series of summaries on production safety aimed at consumers and producers; a database of critical control points for each commodity, and reports of consumer surveys conducted throughout Europe.
