Added: 2010-07-30More detailsTafseer al-Mizan
http://www.almizan.org/
This websites provides the reader with easy access to a translation of substantial parts of the Tafsir al-Mizan. This major exegetical work was produced by one of the foremost Iranian Shi'i religious scholars of the 20th century, Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Husayn al-Tabataba'i (1892-1981), and reflects not only his background as a scholar rooted in traditional Shi'i religious thought (including the philosophical teachings of the school of Mulla Sadra), but also more contemporary socio-political concerns (many of his students were influential in the Iranian Revolution of 1979). This translation project still seems to be under progress, and the English translation has not been made from the original Arabic, but from a Persian translation by Saeed Akhtar Rizvi. This still seems to be an ongoing project, as only the first six of the original 20 volumes in Arabic have been translated. Besides the translation, various features can be found on the website, including a search tool, and choice excerpts from the work arranged according to different topics. One can also find a section (through a link to a related website) comparing Tabataba'i with other 20th century exegetical writers, as well as a collection of articles discussing various topics related to Shi'i thought. It should be noted that both the comparative study section and the articles reflect the general approach of the website, which presents Tabataba'i and his thought from a commited Shi'i point of view.

http://www.dar-sirr.com/
This website describes itself as "the first world wide web initiative to create and develop a complete portal to Moroccan Sufism". Many websites that deal with the subject of Moroccan Sufism do so in French, and this is one of the first to do so in English. The author of the website himself is a descendant and devotee of famous Sufi shaykhs of this region, and this website is therefore mainly aimed at people with a personal interest in Sufism. However, the information given here about the various scholars, saints and shariffs (descendents of the Prophet Muhammad) of Morocco is extensive, and would still be of great use for the researcher. Biographies of important figures come with pictures of their tombs and long translations of passages from their works. The 'Hagiography Bank' section also proves quite useful, as one can find such figures listed according to date, place or tariqa (Sufi order) affiliation. In addition to this, newcomers to the subject can also find more general articles on the various aspects of Moroccan Islam and Sufism. For those interested in discussion with fellow admirers or researchers, a forum is available on the website.

Added: 2010-07-30More detailsMas'ud Ahmed Khan's home page
http://www.masud.co.uk/
The Mas’ud Ahmed Khan website has evolved substantially from its early origins as a newsgroup run in the 1990s by the administrator. Its resources mainly reflect the interests and concerns of an increasingly vocal and articulate section of British Muslim society interested in reviving a traditionalist Sunni version of Islam, Sufi orientated, and keen on maintaining a strong British identity (one section is dedicated to British Muslim Heritage). Leading figures of this community (US born Nuh Ha Mim Keller and Cambridge don Abdul Hakim Murad, who both produce a bulk of the articles) have grown in importance over the last decade, particularly following 9/11 and the increasing media attention given to Muslims in the West. Therefore, this website is useful to those interesting in researching discussion among British Muslims over issues relating to citizenship and jihad, articulated not only in contemporary article form, but also in the language of classical juristic and theological scholarship. Numerous video and audio resources are also available, including lectures and radio interviews. These resources deal not only with contemporary social issues, but also long-standing theological debates that are still current in modern Muslim society.

The website 'Ama' is essentially an advertisement for a book of the same name by the American author Manu Herbstein. As such it contains two sample chapters from the book as a taster, as well as details of how to order the book. There are also details of the writing of the book and background information detailing the research which went into its writing. The site also provides reviews of the text (not all favourable). Of most interest to scholars of Africa and the slave trade, however, are the 'enhancements' section and the very useful links which the site offers. There are a number of maps and images of Africa during the slave trade, all provided in reasonably high resolution, as well as links to films and other resources examining the Atlantic slave trade.

By providing translations, this website aims to create access for the wider English-speaking Muslim public to writings by classical and contemporary Sunni scholarship. For the Islamic Studies student or researcher, this website can provide a look into the living heritage of medieval Sunnism. The Sunni scholarship that the translators of this website are concerned with reflect a more classical approach (described here as 'orthodox'), sympathetic to the approach of speculative theological schools as well as the teachings and practices of Sufis, and are dominantly from the Arab world (or at least wrote in Arabic). A section dedicated to biographies of such scholars can be found, as well as a collection of photographs of scholars from various parts of the Muslim world. Most of the translations given here are in PDF form, and are either from relatively short treatises, or small sections from larger works. In line with the contemporary concerns of traditional Sunni discourse, many of these papers attempt to defend the theological methodology of the Ash'ari and Maturidi schools as well the teachings of Sufism from attacks by more reformist Sunni streams. Although the quality of translation does vary from text to text, the standard of translation is usually good, and transliteration and citations are given in the style found in academic journal. A number of audio and video recordings of lectures in Arabic by contemporary scholars can also be found on this website, as well as an online forum.

It was originally conceived as a 'Deen News Bureau', and still provides up to date information on events and news related to Muslims (mainly Sunni) in the English speaking world, particularly Britain and the United States. The main target audiences of this portal are young, educated western Muslims who are interested in a moderate traditional form of Islam. By logging in as a member, one can participate in its message boards, and add new events and links. New developments in the Muslim web community can also be followed on the Blogtracker section. http://meterdown.wordpress.com/
The meter down blog contains a collection of interviews (in Hindi), writing in English and audio feeds documenting a number of conversations with Bombay taxi drivers. The interviews are explorations into the issues of migration and are a collection of sub-altern voices in a city consumed with the narrative of globalisation and rapid change. This non-academic project, is slowly, conversation by conversation, assembling a repository of oral histories. At the time of this review (December 2008) there were sixteen interviews on the site, each giving an interesting context to the interview and the interviewee, with photographs and a personal history of each informant. A podcast is also available so that new interviews can be automatically downloaded as they are created. An RSS feed allows similar warning of new content for those wishing to view, rather than hear the content. An ambitious project which could become quite significant, this is a fascinating site which should interest urban historians, social scientists and political commentators alike.

There is also the promise of future results from the survey, which should prove useful to any scholar of South Asian art and the perceptions of its meaning among different audiences. Those wishing to view the artworks will have to create an account with a user name and password.

http://ignca.nic.in/dgt_0001.htm
The website Kalsampada comprises an impressive and very large databank of resources, publications and ephemera relating to Indian art and culture. The site gives information about and access to the extensive holdings of the Indira Gandhi national centre for the arts, many of which are available freely for download through links available on the home page. There are collections of photographs, ebooks, papers, research reports, essays, bibliographies and audio recordings, all with annotations and notes and a great number freely accessible. While this is only a pilot project, the scope and scale of what is available is very impressive and the promise of what might be possible in the future is very great. The design is not fantastic, and the home page could be less cluttered to make searching more simple, but this is a laudable project which should become a very important research tool in the future.

"eDemocracia" is the blog of a Spanish organisation which was created in 2003 to study the impact that new technologies are having on democratic systems and, more precisely, the case of Spain. The site discusses in what ways the internet and new technologies may help to increase political action, transparency and the active participation of people in political decisions. Although there are a few articles and comments about worldwide issues, the site will mainly be of interest to those dedicated to the impact of new media and technology in Spanish society and politics. The site offers the possibility of reading working papers and articles by the members of this organisation. Some examples are: "E-Participación: de la remediación a la simulación"; "Ciberactivismo y alfabetización digital"; "eDemocracia, retos y limites para la Acción, la Participación y la Representación Política". The site also features some information about symposiums on the matter, and an exhaustive list of links. The London Chinese Cultural Centre stages film, education and music and performance events in the capital. Its simple homepage lists a guide to current and future events, of which users are able to read a brief summary, and be navigated to a new page for further visual and textual information (in English and complicated Chinese characters). One of the main annual events run by the centre is the London Chinese Film Festival, which shows Mainland Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwanese films, often without other UK distribution networks. The Centre also stages film shows throughout the year, and it is worthwhile to visit the films section of the website for information on new and recent releases.
The website also offers contact details of the centre, and a short list of links to related websites, although it is need of expansion. The website would be of value to anyone interested in the diasporic Chinese community, and Chinese cultural activities. Its main interest, however, lies in its short descriptions of its film programme.

The accompanying online resource to the PBS Frontline programme, The Tank Man, follows the image of a young man standing in front of a tank used to quash the Tiananmen protests in 1989 to interrogate the progress of political and ideological freedoms in modern China. Users will find a brief introduction to the programme, and sections on the Tiananmen Square protests and their aftermath, which include: eyewitness accounts and press reactions to the 1989 protests; a timeline of key events in the student movement; discussions of the aftermath of the protests and their government repression; and discussions on censorship and freedom of information in Mainland China. Unfortunately, users in some countries (including the United Kingdom) are not able the view the programme online due to rights restrictions.
The website would be of value to anyone with an interest in modern Chinese political history. It includes a great deal of textual information from respected academics on freedoms and rights in China, and extends the debate about the protests beyond their immediate historical context to their implications on culture in China today. Teachers of secondary level will also fins a teachers' guide with lesson plans, and the site acts as a gateway to related websites and online journalism, although it should be noted that not all links are still active at the time of review.

This interest in dialogue and reconciliation extends also to inter-faith dialogue, and a list of the various events and publications organised by this institute can be found here, connected to both types of dialogue. The institute also is involved in funding and organising research in the study of Islamic thought and civilization. The list of fellows associated with the institute contains names of prominent Muslim researchers and teachers in both traditional and modern institutes of learning.

A number of audio and video recordings of lectures in Arabic by contemporary scholars can also be found on this website, as well as an online forum.

http://meterdown.wordpress.com/

The website 'Soyuz: The Research Network for Postsocialist Cultural Studies' is an interest group of the American Anthropological Association. Formed in 1993, it is a network which brings together anthropologists and other scholars working in postsocialist studies. The group meets formally and regularly at various conferences in Europe and North America. The home page features a review of a book of the month, with a link to the publisher in order that site visitors can order the book. Former books of the month are archived with their reviews. The site offers a calendar of both Soyuz and non-Soyuz related events. These are mainly relevant international colloquia. An archive on the site offers full Soyuz newsletters from 1994 to 1997, as well as reports and programmes of past conferences going back to 1996. The site gives an excellent address list of its members with their institutional affiliations. This information is bolstered by a well-updated bibliography of members' research. The bibliography indicates that members' main interests concentrate on political, economic and cultural development in Russia, East Central Europe and Central Asia. The site provides good employment, postgraduate and postdoctoral funding announcments. Soyuz has several annotated links pages, which are clear, extensive, and should be very helpful for academics working in this field. For those interested, there is a mailing list on the H-Net Listserv, H-Soyuz.

The website provides a bibliography of works on the Rothschild family, details of bursaries available for study at the archive, key dates in the history of the family, and news. A wide variety of historical and bibliographic resources is available from the 'Instituto Brasileiro de Filosofia e Ciência Raimundo Lúlio' on Ramon Llull (1232-1316), one of the most famous medieval scientists. Theologically, Ramon Llull was known for his dramatic visions of Christ, which lead to his conversion to Christianity and his resulting works on Christian doctrine and missions. However, in recent years, he has been the particular focus of researchers interested in the development of natural philosophy in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Likewise, the site underlines the figure of Llull as an inspiring figure for cross-religious dialogues. The vast majority of resources are found under the Studies on Ramon Llull link. From here, one can access data on the chronology of his life and details about his travels. For those looking to expand the frontiers of Llull research, there is a helpful directory of critical editions in both Latin and Catalan; as well as details of theses published in Brazil and a catalogue of pseudo-Llull works on alchemy. The Institute has also collected a series of electronic articles in Portuguese, German, Italian, Spanish and English. A number of free ebooks are available, as well as a catalogue of publications which can be purchased on site. Users of these pages should note that while the site can be navigated in English, many of the documents themselves are available only in Portuguese.

http://www.almizan.org/

Added: 2010-07-29More detailsMeter down
http://meterdown.wordpress.com/
This site is a survey canvassing opinions of American, Swiss and Tibetan participants about their impressions of a number of works of Tibetan art. Whilst this may not be of direct relevance to visitors to the site from outside of these regions, the website is nonetheless of interest due to the variety of works it displays which cover a range of periods and styles.

The site also features some information about symposiums on the matter, and an exhaustive list of links. http://www.chineseculturalcentre.org.uk/

Teachers of secondary level will also fins a teachers' guide with lesson plans, and the site acts as a gateway to related websites and online journalism, although it should be noted that not all links are still active at the time of review.

http://www.almizan.org/

This is the official website of ‘A Common Word’, a letter drafted and signed by a large group of Muslim scholars, clerics and intellectuals in reaction to the controversy raised by Pope Benedict the XVI’s message in Regensberg on the 13th of September, 2006. The name ‘Common Word’ refers to a Quranic verse (3:64) which calls on followers of other Abrahamic religions to come together with Muslims and agree on common ground and shared values. This document can be found here in numerous languages (including English, Arabic, French, German, Russian, Polish and Indonesian), together with lists of signatories and recipients. The website has special sections for documents related to Christian and Jewish responses, and a ‘News’ section which provides a chronology of events following the release of ‘A Common Word’. The ‘New Fruits’ section has a substantial collection of papers published since then, including conference proceedings. Audio and video recordings of many of the events mentioned above can also be seen in the multimedia section.

http://www.aalalbayt.org/en/index.html
This is the website of the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, a non-governmental research institute based in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The name Aal al-Bayt is a reference to the family of the Prophet Muhammad, to which Jordanian royal family claim descent. This choice of name is intentionally aimed at bringing together the various schisms within Islam, particularly that between Sunnis and Shi’is. A selection of some scholarly contributions (in both Arabic and English) on the subject of ‘Love in the Holy Quran’ (the topic of the Institute’s Fourteenth General Conference) can be freely accessed from the website. Together with this, one can find information on past, current and future activities organised by institute in the ‘Projects’ section.
Added: 2010-07-30More detailsSunnipath : the online Islamic academy
http://www.sunnipath.com/
Sunnipath is an online academy dedicated to providing access to traditional Sunni Muslim education to the English-speaking Muslim world. Many of the scholars associated with this institute were trained in various religious fields, and received their qualifications in traditional institutes or circles of learning (mainly based in Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Yemen) using the personal certification (ijaza) system. Sunnipath tries to combine the benefits of such a system with the advantages of modern technology and educational forms. Attendance of most courses requires payment of fees, but free registration is also possible, allowing access to numerous free online classes and events. The website also hosts a number of features that are accessible without the need for registration. The Answers section was the original reason behind Sunnipath’s creation in 2003, and it is still a useful and regularly updated resource for those with questions about Islamic law (answers are available for two rites of law: the Shafi’i and the Hanafi), faith or practice. The Library section has numerous resources including articles, Quran recitation recordings and translations of a number of classical texts (most notable are the Hadith collections found here). The website also hosts a blog with daily comments from the many scholars affiliated with the institute.

The journal has a bias towards political, economic and social issues, so is suitable for social scientists from higher education communities. As of 2009, only one issue is available in English translation, therefore an intermediate level of French is required.

The website is made even more accessible through its multilingual format (Arabic, English, French, German, Russian).

Each article opens on a new scroll-down page and titles include 'British Composers in Literature', 'Crime Fiction and Music', 'Music inspired by Sherlock Holmes', 'Music and the Brontes', 'The Cafe Orchestra in Fact and Fiction', 'Jane Austen and Music' and 'Elgar in Crime Fiction'. The articles vary in length and detail but are all fully referenced and offer an excellent starting point for research on the broad subject of music in literature, as well as more focused analysis of particular genres and authors. The garlands almost reach 380 (May 2003) with many still in manuscript awaiting transcribing. There is a search facility.
Added: 2010-07-30More detailsAma, a story of the Atlantic slave trade
http://www.ama.africatoday.com/
The website 'Ama' is essentially an advertisement for a book of the same name by the American author Manu Herbstein. As such it contains two sample chapters from the book as a taster, as well as details of how to order the book. There are also details of the writing of the book and background information detailing the research which went into its writing. The site also provides reviews of the text (not all favourable). Of most interest to scholars of Africa and the slave trade, however, are the 'enhancements' section and the very useful links which the site offers. There are a number of maps and images of Africa during the slave trade, all provided in reasonably high resolution, as well as links to films and other resources examining the Atlantic slave trade.

http://www.marifah.net

Deenport is a web portal for those interested in subjects generally related to Islam and Muslims. Based on frames, the format of the website is simple and easy to use. An online art gallery displays a selection of Islam-related artwork and photos, and one can also download lessons and audio recordings of religious music such as Sufi chants and songs in praise of the God and the Prophet Muhammad.
Added: 2010-07-29More detailsMeter down
http://meterdown.wordpress.com/
Added: 2010-07-29More detailsSeeing Tibetan art
http://www.seeingtibetanart.org
This site is a survey canvassing opinions of American, Swiss and Tibetan participants about their impressions of a number of works of Tibetan art. Whilst this may not be of direct relevance to visitors to the site from outside of these regions, the website is nonetheless of interest due to the variety of works it displays which cover a range of periods and styles. There is also the promise of future results from the survey, which should prove useful to any scholar of South Asian art and the perceptions of its meaning among different audiences. Those wishing to view the artworks will have to create an account with a user name and password.
Added: 2010-07-29More detailsKalasampada digital library : resources of Indian cultural heritage
http://ignca.nic.in/dgt_0001.htm
The website Kalsampada comprises an impressive and very large databank of resources, publications and ephemera relating to Indian art and culture. The site gives information about and access to the extensive holdings of the Indira Gandhi national centre for the arts, many of which are available freely for download through links available on the home page. There are collections of photographs, ebooks, papers, research reports, essays, bibliographies and audio recordings, all with annotations and notes and a great number freely accessible. While this is only a pilot project, the scope and scale of what is available is very impressive and the promise of what might be possible in the future is very great. The design is not fantastic, and the home page could be less cluttered to make searching more simple, but this is a laudable project which should become a very important research tool in the future.

http://edemocracia.blogspot.com/
The organisation published a number of bulletins during 2006, which are also available in addition to an archive of previous comments and news.
Added: 2010-07-29More detailsLondon Chinese cultural centre
http://www.chineseculturalcentre.org.uk/
Added: 2010-07-29More detailsTank Man
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/tankman/
