Dr. Melissa Pilgrim will discuss synergistic outcomes (e.g., publications, grants and undergraduate research projects) associated with her positions as Visiting Scientist at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory and Upstate Regional Coordinator for the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program. Dr. Jennifer Parker will discuss community partnerships and opportunities to combine service, teaching and scholarship. This has led to the creation of a new interdisciplinary minor, grant opportunities and scholarship. Dr. Steve Caldwell will discuss recognizing opportunities in the business community to engage organizations with academic competencies that both meet their needs and offer possibilities for scholarship. Dr. Lynette M. Gibson will discuss community-based participatory recruitment strategies that were used to engage African-American churches and community organizations to assist in recruiting participants for research on breast health. Millions of people struggle with depression and most of us will either experience it or know someone who struggles with depression. In an effort to normalize this issue and increase awareness, Counseling Services is sponsoring the National Depression Screening Day Information Table on Tuesday, October 12, from 10:00am-3:00pm in the Campus Life Center (2nd floor lobby). The event is open to all USC Upstate students. Participants can learn more about depression by picking up brochures, completing a self assessment, taking an online survey or viewing an educational video. Hailed as an American hero, Alva was decorated and visited by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Vice President Dick Cheney, and President George W. Bush. However, he was only able to be true to himself after he left the military, and upon his retirement came out as a gay man. Today, Eric Alva is a gay rights activist and spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, where he speaks out against the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Alva has teamed up with members of Congress to help put an end to this discriminatory practice. Not only is Eric Alva a truly heroic man, but through his powerful message of hope and confidence he is making the world a better place for all those who have felt the pains of discrimination and hate.
