Backpacking LIght WorkshopMay 9 - 1pm After 32 years backpacking, with the last 5 years researching and implementing a more lightweight method, I have information to share with new or returning backpackers. I plan to hold a 3-4 hour workshop on Saturday, May9 starting at 1 PM. We will review the basics of backpacking: Keeping warm and dry Prevention of getting lost Gear to bring, as well as the latest on lightweight packing. This will be in my home, which can hold about 15 people. If there are only 4 people, that will still be enough to have a lively discussion. Call to reserve a space. Contact: Margarite at 816.361.7757 Photography Outing at Loose ParkMay 16 - 9am When it comes to celebrating springs majesty, Loose Park continues to be a winner for beauty and diversity of people, activities, landscape, and as a central meeting location! So once again, lets meet at the Pavilion there on Wornall Road at 9 AM. (However, if you like, come earlier to capture the sunrise or early morning glow at the rose garden or lagoon.) Well spend several hours at the park, break for lunch nearby, then extend our exploration into Kauffman Gardens and perhaps surrounding areas. If weather doesnt cooperate, well reschedule for May 23. Well begin a two-hour bike ride from the Leawood City Park south of I-435 at Lee Blvd. Well meet in the parking lot for the swimming pool. Please arrive early and bring your bike, helmets and water. Contact: Mike at 816.942.0711 Day Hike the Prairie CenterMay 30 - 10:30am It is time for a nice morning hike at the Prairie Center tallgrass preserve in Olathe. We will hike 4 miles on the mowed grass and earth/rock trail. We will have a stop at the quarter-way point at a shelter where there is a restroom. Be sure to bring water as the shelter area does not have any. After we finish we can go for a nice lunch at Fred Otts on Hwy 7 in Olathe where they have a covered outdoor patio that is great for informal dining. Directions: from central KC, go southwest toward Olathe on I-35 and exit at Santa Fe (135th). Then drive west on Santa Fe about 5 miles and turn left on Cedar Niles Road (at the stone house). We will be meeting at the shelter house at 9 AM. Plan on hiking for about two hours on a rolling grass/dirt/wood chip trail. Hiking boots are suggested and a walking stick is helpful. The trail covers a variety of scenery including upland, lowland, old fields, streams, and forest. Bug spray is always a good idea. Directions: Take I-35 north to the Wallace State Park exit #48. Turn right on Hwy 69 and left on 121. Picnic shelters are near the entrance. We have reserved Shelter #4. Please bring a dish to share and $2 to cover the cost of the shelter, tableware and beverages. The park has lovely gardens and a paved walking trail of about a mile. Antioch park is just south of Shawnee Mission Parkway on Antioch Rd at 65th street. (West of Metcalf and east of I-35.) Shelter #4 is accessed via the north entrance on 65th street. Wildflowers at the Prairie CenterJune 13 - 8:30am Glenn Fell, an expert on native plants and Board Member of Grassland Heritage Foundation will be leading a wildflower walk at The Prairie Center.
