y - latest quotes Llambias utterances as reproduced by The Journal"The money that Mike put in last week (£20M) was to cover costs like wages and so on because we wanted to keep the core of a squad together which would have the best possible chance of being able to get us promoted this season.
“It has not been put aside for transfers. However, we have had a meeting with Chris last week and we have told him we will do whatever we can whenever he needs it.
“We are looking at it now, at this moment we are looking at players he has given us the names of.
“If he wants a player, we ask for the name and the position and then we will try to sign them. At the moment, in our present circumstances, we would prefer that to be loan signings.
"However, in January, when the transfer window opens, if Chris sees a player he wants to buy for a million quid or so we will go out and get him for the team.
"We are particularly interested in player under the age of 22 because we have always had an idea of building something for the future as well as the present. We are currently talking to two 16 year-olds from Ireland who we are going to sign for our Academy (one of whom is presumably Dundalk defender Nathan Murphy).
“But there will be money invested inthe team because the most important thing is getting us up – and if Chris feels the team is short in a particular area, we want to be able to do something about it for him.
“I know we are unpopular and I know a lot of fans don’t like us, but all we want to do is give the club the best possible chance to get back into the Premier League for next season.
“That is in everybody’s interests and we would urge supporters to get behind the team. There is a lot of negativity surrounding the club and there has been for a long time.
“But the most important thing is the team and helping that team get promoted. Promotion is by far and away the most important thing this season and we should all be focused on that goal. When we have achieved that and this team is back in the right division we will focus our energy on making sure we have a team which can keep us there.”

No Messiah - but a sign
Derek Llambias quotes, Tuesday afternoon:"We are just basically looking to explore and maximise our revenues. We have a great opportunity at the moment because our sponsorships are coming to an end - a kit sponsor, shirt sponsor and then we have stadium rights sponsor.
"Our intention is to put a package together that would include, for instance for the stadium rights, a jumbo screen included in that sponsorship which is great for the fans as well.
"Our intention is to have whoever the sponsor is - say SportsDirect.com @ St James' Park. We are never going to lose St James' Park, it is always going to be @St James' Park.
"So at the moment the Gallowgate has already got SportsDirect.com. We would like to follow that through and take it for the rest of the season as a showcase to whoever is out there who would like to buy the package as SportsDirect.com @ St James' Park.
"Of course (we understand fan fears), we know the history, an incredible history, an incredible passion with the fans. There's an ownership to it, we understand St James' Park, the history is just wonderful.
"We are not trying to take that away, we are just trying to add something to the revenue status of our club."So, does that actually mean that SJP has already been renamed for the rest of the season after Ashley's firm or is in the process of being renamed? As we've said before, we fail to see which business would pay to be associated with this bunch, @ or no @? And as for this latest "update" from SJP, let's recall the club's own phrase from the recent Kevin Keegan tribunal judgment:"nothing more than an exercise in public relations." in response to various emails asking where the jumbo screen at the ground would be situated - we don't know.

Tuesday saw Newcastle's reserve side compensate for a lack of league fixtures for a second successive week, by playing a behind closed doors fixture. Behind to a 34th Nathan Porritt shot at Boro's Hurworth training ground, the Magpies levelled just two minutes after the restart when beat Danny Coyne in the home goal with a close-range header. Coyne then thwarted Ryan Donaldson as United pressed forward in search of a winner. While LuaLua played the second game of his comeback from a groin injury, there was a new fitness worry for United though, Wesley Ngo Baheng having to be withdrawn with a hamstring pull. NUFC: Alnwick, Morris (Leadbitter 72), Grieve (J.Taylor 72), Tozer, Ferguson (Folan 72), Adjei, Donaldson, McLaughlin (McDermott 72), Danquah, Baheng (Inman 27), Kazenga LuaLua.

4th November 1885 Sandy Higgins born, Kilmarnock, Scotland. (1905-19)
1958 Frans Koenen born, Waalwijk, Netherlands. (1980-81)
An U21 international Left winger and captain, Frans came to Tyneside from NEC Nijmegen but only arrived at SJP after a brief trial with Oldham. His time in our first team was short, partly due a knee injury and also a change in manager when Arthur Cox succeeded Bill McGarry. He returned to the Netherlands with Vitesse Arnhem via a spell in Belgium and later played for and managed GVVV in Veenendael (whom United faced on their Dutch tour in 2002).
Frans has also had spells in charge of Dutch amateur sides ARC and Bataven Germania and then VV Rood Wit.
1960 Gary Nicholson born, Hexham. (1977-81)This left winger was another player who failed to take the eye of new United boss Arthur Cox - with the emerging Chris Waddle another factor. He moved on to play for Mansfield, York, Halifax and then into the non-league scene with Blyth, Whitley Bay, North Shields, Guiseley, Gateshead, RTM Newcastle (now Blue Star) and Lemington Labour Club.

After levelling the tie on aggregate and holding on through extra time, the Hungarians triumphed in a penalty shootout. United missed all three of theirs (Robson, Mitchell, Gibb) while McFaul was helpless to stop any of the three he faced. And as the stunned United team reached the sanctuary of the dressing room, they were forced to send out two more penalty takers, Fairs Cup rules demanding all ten penalties be taken. Dozsa scored their last two and Clark and McFaul did likewise.

To make matters worse, the incident took place yards away from where a group of Orient supporters were sat, having wisely avoided going to Ayresome Park to see their former hero.

Newcastle 'keeper Wright went off injured at half time and Kevin Brock took over and held firm, despite being semi-conscious and unsure of where he was after a kick in the head from Speedie. Stan Seymour Jr died following the match in a local hotel.

2006 Sheffield United (h) Webber(68) 50,188The roller-coaster ride of supporting Newcastle United became ridiculous when the high of Palermo was followed swiftly by one of the lowest lows in the club's history, less than 48 hours later.
Losing at home to a side that hadn't won all season and hadn't even scored a goal, to leave us second bottom of the Premiership was beyond belief. And we were only the width of a post away from being bottom.
The decision to pocket the TV money for this game, rather than put the fixture back to Sunday, was diabolical. The false economy of taking a few hundred grand while risking the club's top flight status was a gamble that was never worth taking.
2008Richard Money's Reserve side extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to four games at SJP, but only had themselves to blame for failing to collect all three points. United had gone behind to a lively Tigers side who wasted numerous chances before former Bolton player Stelios tapped in from close range on 32 minutes. But after hauling themselves back level, thanks to Andy Carroll's firm header from a Bassong cross on 48 minutes, they then proceeded to waste opportunities of their own.
