West Ham (h)Our first league fixture of 2009 sees the Hammers make the trip to Tyneside for a 3pm kick-off this Saturday.
NUFC: to follow...Nicky Butt sits this one out, after receiving an automatic one-game ban following his fifth booking of the season, incurred at Hull. Jonas Gutierrez is one booking away from a one-game ban.
Charles N'Zogbia is expected to be OK after limping off at the KC Stadium with a dead leg, but there's an illness doubt over Danny Guthrie, with Cacapa on standby.
Barton, Beye, Gonzalez, Martins, Smith & Viduka remain sidelined, while Ameobi, Cacapa and Xisco aren't expected to feature - whether named on the bench or not....
JFK has given Andy Carroll a belated 20th birthday present by confirming that the striker will be in his starting XI - only his third ever competitive senior start for Newcastle and his first on home soil.
Paddy Power offer the following odds on Carroll notching his first senior goal for the club on the ground where he's found the net during previous appearances in FA Youth Cup, reserve and first team friendly fixtures:
First scorer in game @ 7/1
To score anytime @ 12/5
To be first Newcastle scorer @ 9/2
To score in a Newcastle win @ 7/2
Last scorer in the game @ 7/1
To score only goal of the game @ 33/1
And for the others in the side who are also looking to break their duck, first goalscorer odds are as follows:
Bassong @ 40/1
Coloccini @ 33/1
Gutierrez @ 20/1
Enrique @ 50/1
"Spiderman" has now played 1,364 minutes of competitive football for us (1,190 in the League) without scoring.

WHUFC: to follow...Gianfranco Zola's side began 2009 with a 3-0 home win in the FA Cup against Barnsley - their third successive victory after a 4-1 win at Pompey and a 2-1 home win against Stoke.
That FA Cup tie also marked the return of Kieron Dyer to first team football after a seventeen month absence.
Appearing at SJP would be only his fifth competitive outing for the club he swapped life on Tyneside for - he's yet to finish on the losing side for West Ham (3 wins/1 draw).
Dyer is one of a quintet of old boys returning to their former club, along with Scott Parker, Lee Bowyer, Craig Bellamy and Hammers assistant boss Steve Clarke.
However that depends upon West Ham holding off the advances of Manchester City, who have been credited with an interest in signing both Parker and Bellamy.
And there's a link with Lee Bowyer and Birmingham City - a mooted move which came a cropper back in 2006 when City fan protests deterred the player from switching to the Blues from Newcastle.
Matthew Etherington and Callum Davenport also look close to finding new clubs, with moves to Stoke City and Bolton Wanderers respectively said to be nearing completion.
Away from East London, West Ham have won at Fulham, the mackems and Pompey, whilst taking points from their visits to the smoggies, Liverpool and Chelsea. Defeats came at West Brom, Hull and both Manchester sides.

The transfer speculation story of 2009 so far has to be the crackpot tale of Newcastle and Boro attempting to swap Alan Smith for Mido - the former not yet back in training after being absent all season, the latter having recently labelled travelling toon fans as "shameful", "disgusting" and "racist".
It's coming up on five years since the Egyptian was first linked with a transfer to Tyneside, telling reporters in his home country that he was due to have talks with Sir Bobby Robson. He ended up signing for AS Roma.

Claim and counter-claim over the fitness of striker Obafemi Martins in recent days have been settled by confirmation from United that he does require surgery.
He will now head for Germany for a hernia operation next Monday in the Munich clinic of Doctor Ulrike Muschawek, who has previously performed similar ops on Steve Harper, Shay Given, Alan Shearer & Michael Owen.
No date has been put on his return to action, but he's expected to be sidelined for "a couple of weeks" as he recovers from the procedure.
Martins has also distanced himself from quotes criticising club staff that were attributed to his agent, saying:
"I wish to make it perfectly clear that I have never criticised the medical team at Newcastle United, who all do an excellent job for the Club.
"All I am concentrating on is getting fit again as soon as possible so I can be back playing and helping the team."
The Northern Echo had earlier reported reported Oba's agent as having said:
“The Newcastle medical staff are woeful - Oba has been having this problem on and off and they failed to spot it.“It was only when he went to Italy that the correct diagnosis was made, and he will have the operation this week.
“Look at the entire team. Viduka is injured, Alan Smith is injured, Nicky Butt is injured, and so many players. Even when Shearer was playing, how many times did he end up on the treatment table?”
PS: Martins has also been in the news this week, after escaping with a fine for admitting a speeding offence.
He'd been clocked at 106mph en route to Newcastle Airport in May 2008, for which he was given 6 points
and fined £950, including costs.ckets

Those season ticket holders entitled to free cup tickets this season will get this game automatically added to their smart cards - that you won't receive a paper ticket*.
*due to the additional Level 7 places being allocated for Hull, it's feasible that fans entitled to free tickets won't be sitting in their own seats for this game. We're seeking guidance on what the situation is for these people now.
With Crewe and Millwall scheduled to face each other 24 hours earlier in their Third Round replay, the identity of
our potential Fourth Round visitors will already be known by the time we kickoff against the Tigers.
PS: Hull are looking to have a new design of kit made for this visit to SJP, having been forced to wear their grey away shirt with white Newcastle shorts for the league game here back in September.

Striker extends himself:
Shola finds his pen
Shola Ameobi has become the first Newcastle player to agree and sign a contract extension keeping him at SJP beyond the end of the current season.
The 27 year-old has put pen to paper on a three year deal running through to 2012, marking a complete turnaround from his expected departure in 2008, when he was loaned to Stoke City but failed to make the move permanent.
Ameobi had also looked set to join Ipswich Town last year, when given permission to speak to the Championship club - only for the move to collapse amid injury fears.
Shola made his first team debut as a substitute in a home draw with Chelsea in September 2000, racking up 144 starts and 100 sub appearances in all competitions.
He remains one goal away from completing a half century in our colours, scoring three times this season after having being marooned on 46 since October 2006.
Tuesday's Mirror carried a tale of Ameobi reporting what he believed to be a break-in at his home, only to then realise that it was nothing more than his own untidiness that had caused him to misplace the "missing" items....
That ever-present club insider cropped up at the local
cop shop to tell the paper that:"We were told thieves had taken a number of things, the most important one being the chequebook. Given what soccer stars earn, that was obviously a matter of great concern.
"We got a call back saying nothing was missing after all - perhaps he had had a party and the place just looked as if it had been burgled."
A police spokesman confirmed:
"We received a report of a theft from a house in Jesmond but it appears to have been a genuine misunderstanding."
Does that mean that Shola's sarcastic nickname of the Fenham Eusebio now changes to the Jesmond Messi?Latest:
No CM comebackStuck with Xisco
Following recent media speculation, former Newcastle United Chairman Chris Mort has made it known that
he's had no contact from Mike Ashley regarding a return
to his previous role - or any other position at SJP.
Mort confirmed that he has attended some Newcastle games this season, but purely as a fan and not on any official basis.
Latest:Home advantage
The situation regarding Magpies striker Xisco is no nearer resolution, amid confirmation that the early season appearances he made for Deportivo La Coruna before
moving to SJP in August now prevent him from moving
on elsewhere in the current transfer window.
Under FIFA rules, players can be registered for three clubs in one season, but only appear competitively for two.
On the basis that he's at least injury-free and has been named on the first team bench recently, Xisco's failure to play in a single Newcastle reserve game this season is nothing short of baffling.
His injury-affected Toon career to date consists of three starts and two sub outings - the last of which came in the closing stages of the home victory over West Bromwich Albion back in October 2008.
FAC4:
Newcastle's reward for beating Hull City at SJP in their FA Cup Third Round replay would be a home Fourth Round tie against either Millwall or Crewe Alexandra.
Former Magpie Dave Beasant selected our ball in Sunday's draw, with Roberto di Matteo then pairing us with the League One duo (Millwall lie third; Crewe bottom).
The sides drew 2-2 at the New Den on Saturday and replay again at Gresty Road on Tuesday January 13th.
Fourth Round ties are scheduled to take place over the weekend of January 24th - and with the mackems already guaranteed to be in home action that weekend, it seems unlikely that both they and ourselves would be able to stage 3pm Saturday kickoffs due to police restrictions.
A trio of players with Newcastle connections are in the current Crewe squad - although none of them ever made
a competitive appearance for the Magpies.
Striker Calvin Zola was released as a teenager, while defender Dennis Lawrence was on trial at during the Robson era. Standing at 6'7", the Trinidad & Tobago international is on loan from Swansea City, but eligible
to play in the FA Cup for Crewe.
The third and final old boy is Stuart Green, who is also on loan at the Alex but would be ineligible to play after having appeared for his own club Blackpool in an earlier round.
Much-travelled Green got as far as a place on the Toon bench before moving on - being one of "other" subs alongside Alan Shearer and Duncan Ferguson in the SJP mackem monsoon game of August 1999.
Aside from six league meetings in the 1890s, Newcastle's only meeting with Crewe came back in season's 1991/92 League Cup competition.
A eventful away leg saw the Railwaymen race into an early 3-0 lead, before Andy Hunt and a hat trick from Gavin Peacock gave us a 4-3 advantage by full time.
Steve Howey then netted the only goal of a forgettable second leg in front of less than 10K fans on Tyneside.
More familiar foes at league level, Millwall's last Toon trip came in December 1992, when a David Kelly penalty salvaged a point in a 1-1 draw with the Lions in what was to be our promotion season.
Millwall had won @ SJP in the previous two seasons, registering another 1-1 in the final home fixture of our 1988/89 relegation campaign.
We've never beaten the South London side in a cup competition, succumbing 0-2 to them on Tyneside in the 1977/78 League Cup and going down 2-1 at Cold Blow Lane in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie back in January 1957.
We have no former players in the Lions lineup - but a certain D.Wise managed them between 2003 and 2005, having joined them as a player in 2002.

Joe Kinnear's latest utterances about possible transfer comings & goings have us scratching our heads slightly:
"I am aware of how much we have bid for players.
"There are certain players I am trying to sell at the moment so a lot will depend on how much I get back for that. There won’t be any surprise exits. None of the big boys will go but other players may, with a value of £16m for three of them."
"It is in Dennis Wise’s quarters at the moment. He is the one wheeling and dealing, he is the one selling them. We’re trying to get funds back in and he is aware of the players I want."
Three players worth £16m who aren't any of the "big boys"...?
So if Owen and Given are definitely staying - according to JFK - then we're struggling to come up with a trio that would bring in £16m, especially with Xisco's appearances for us and Deportivo meaning he's stuck @ SJP until the end of the season.Premier League:

Hammers in Toon - Premier League years:
Having lost 1-3 at the Boleyn Ground in September, this fixture gives West Ham the chance to do the double over us this season - a feat they last managed in 1998/99.
This will be our twelfth home game of the season in all competitions and although Magpies fans have seen just four home wins (plus four losses and three draws), we haven't yet failed to find the net.
Seventeen goals in all competitions have been scored by eight Magpies: (Owen 6, Martins 4, Ameobi 1, Barton 1, Duff 1, Edgar 1, N'Zogbia 1 and Xisco 1) plus an own goal.
Of Newcastle's six clean sheets in all competitions this season to date, only two have come on home soil.
This will be our 300th home Premiership game having so far won 168, drawn 71 and lost 60, scoring 531 goals and conceding 302 in the process.

Central defender who joined Newcastle's academy from Redheugh Boys, going on to feature at U18 and reserve level for United.
Alex appeared as a late substitute in a pre -season senior team friendly at Hartlepool in July 2007, but was released nine months later without winning a professional deal.
Moving over the Tyne to sign for Gateshead that summer, he quickly came up against his old side in a pre-season friendly.
Now appearing in midfield for the Tynesiders, Alex was the subject of transfer interest in early 2009 from Newcastle Blue Star.
Studying at Gateshead College's Academy of Sport, Alex also plays for their side and has been selected for the English Colleges FA XI.
Ten days after winning 2-1 at SJP in the league, the Reds returned to end our Coca Cola Cup dreams in extra time. Alan Shearer's early effort at the Leazes end was enough to give Newcastle their first Premiership win in four games and reclaim sixth position in the table.
Alan Shearer kept his last trophy dream alive by firing past Kevin Pressman to end the resistance of the Division Two Stags and save us from a trip to Field Mill.Shearer's strike at the Gallowgate end saw him equal Jackie Milburn's 49 year-old record of 200 league and cup goals.
It also secured our 100th home FA Cup victory and gave under-fire Magpies boss Graeme Souness some temporary respite.

Crock or ready to rock?:Oba: second opinion
Following earlier newspaper claims that the injury sidelining Obafemi Martins would require surgery, the news on the striker is slightly better.
The Journal quote JFK as saying that Martins has a small chance of featuring on Saturday, with his condition having improved through not playing or training.
After assessing him in training on Thursday, a final decision will be made on whether he'll undergo a hernia operation - which would be performed quickly and then require about two weeks to recover from - not the six previously mentioned in press reports.
The Northern Echo report the story in similar style, but add quotes from the player's agent attacking the club:
“The Newcastle medical staff are woeful - Oba has been having this problem on and off and they failed to spot it.“It was only when he went to Italy that the correct diagnosis was made, and he will have the operation this week.
“Look at the entire team. Viduka is injured, Alan Smith is injured, Nicky Butt is injured, and so many players. Even when Shearer was playing, how many times did he end up on the treatment table?”

He'd been clocked at 106mph en route to Newcastle Airport in May 2008, for which he was given 6 points
and fined £950, including costs.
Striker extends himself:
Shola Ameobi has become the first Newcastle player to agree and sign a contract extension keeping him at SJP beyond the end of the current season.
The 27 year-old striker has put pen to paper on a three year deal running through to 2012, marking a complete turnaround from his expected departure last season,
when he went out on loan to Stoke City.

Following recent media speculation, former Newcastle United Chairman Chris Mort has made it known that

Mort confirmed that he has attended some Newcastle games this season, but purely as a fan and not on any official basis.
Latest:Crock:Oba Op claim Tuesday brought newspaper claims that the groin problem that has sidelined Obafemi Martins since the victory at Portsmouth last month will after all require surgery. The striker is reported to need a hernia op, which will then require around six weeks of recuperation before he can begin training again.
His injury-affected Toon career to date consists of three starts and two sub outings - the last of which came in the closing stages of the home victory over West Brom back in October 2008.

Striker Bobby had scored goals at a lower level before being brought in to boost our efforts at climbing out of Division Two.
(2005-present)
After spells with Walsall, Cambridge United and Wrexham (where he played against Blyth Spartans in the FA Cup), Shinton had been signed by First Division Manchester City.
He struggled at the higher level however and was loaned out to Millwall before joining Newcastle for £175K barely nine months after arriving at Maine Road for £300K.
One goal in his first ten games saw United win just once to end 1979/80 on a low note, with the mackems sneaking promotion and popular Peter Withe leaving for Aston Villa.
The following season was equally painful, with Shinton ended up as our top scorer, with a paltry seven league goals - the last
of which was scored in the November!
Missing through injury from February 1981, Shinton returned the following season to find striker Imre Varadi in situ - Mick Harford having come and gone in his absence.
He struggled on until March 1982 when he rejoined Millwall for £15K, with injury forcing him to quit the Lions in May 1983.
Moving into the non-league with Worcester City, Bobby later had a spell as manager of Newmarket Town and worked for Aspinalls' Building Supplies in Willingham, Cambridge.
Centre forward who first came to our attention when scoring after just 15
Home goalscorer was Trevor Whymark, a favourite of Sir Bobby Robson's during his time at Portman Road. He later joined Vancouver Whitecaps. Kevin Keegan's dream draw in the FA Cup proved to be a crossroads in his career, as Mark Lawrenson caught and dispossessed him, despite giving KK a two-yard head start. That incident was cited as the moment when Keegan decided to retire at the end of the current season - a decision he revealed in public on his 33rd birthday in February 1984. This Friday night fixtures is remembered for the incredible support given by 12K travelling Geordies, despite the mismatch on the field.
minutes of his U18s debut in March 2005.
Handed a reserve team debut that season, Andy featured at both levels in 2005/06 and made an impact in the FA Youth Cup.
It was a similar story the following season, with Glenn Roeder's promotion from his role
at the Academy to first team boss seeing Carroll training with the first team squad.
November 2006 saw him appear off the bench for the final moments of United's 1-0 UEFA Cup victory in Palermo, becoming our youngest participant in a European fixture.
He made five more sub appearances that season, while the following campaign saw him scoring his first senior goal in a home friendly against Juventus, beating Gianluigi Buffon.
Secured on a contract until 2011, Sam Allardyce allowed Carroll to join Preston on loan, with an international callup seeing him score on his England U19 debut (having turned down a previous Scotland callup).
Twelve appearances for PNE brought him just one league goal (at home to Leicester) and a red card, as Carroll tried to get to grips with Championship football.
Returning to SJP in January 2008, Carroll made five sub appearances for Newcastle that season, under three managers (Allardyce, Pearson and Keegan).
Kevin Keegan handed him his first senior start for the club on the final day of the season away at Everton, but by the time he was seen on a pitch again, KK was history.
A foot injury incurred in the close season saw Carroll absent until October, returning as a sub in the home draw with Manchester City.
After two more sub runouts, Joe Kinnear then rewarded Carroll for scoring five goals in three reserve fixtures by handing him a second start in the FA Cup game at Hull City.
This was immortalised on opening titles, with a shot of 'Reds keeper, Bruce Grobbelaar, conducting the choir.Sweet revenge for Magpies midfielder Gary Megson on his return to the City Ground.
The midfielder had been bought by Brian Clough, who then decided that he "couldn't trap a medicine ball" and refused to pick him for the first team. United then signed him.
Despite being played on a Sunday, the game wasn't televised, having been delayed by 24 hours to allow the pitch to improve.A narrow win at Boothferry Park brought some cheer, following the New Years Day mauling from the Wolves. United sent a side to the Federation Park home of local league side Dunston Federation, to inaugurate new floodlights.
A young reserves side included a three man veteran's defence of Ossie Ardiles, Tony Galvin and Derek Fazackerley, with scored in a 2-1 loss. The highlight was a one-woman protest about the new lights by a neighbour, who stood in her garden and yelled abuse at the 500-strong crowd, who were most amused. The reserves beat Alnwick Town 10-0 in the Senior Cup, with both hitting hat-tricks.
Andy Hunt netted a rare goal and Belisle notched an OG. Trailing at half time, United hit levelled with eleven minutes remaining through sub striker Guy Bates, who netted with a deft flick. As far as the media were concerned though, the main story was the non-performance of City's want-away midfielder Robbie Savage. Banished from the first team squad and forced to train on his own, the Welsh jessie was booed by home fans during the game. Someone went to the trouble of draping a bedsheet with the words "$AV - U HAVE LET US DOWN" over the hoardings at one end, which was duly recorded by a TV crew.
And two local urchins were forcibly removed from the ground by stewards just after half time for some unseemly behaviour. With four minutes remaining Newcastle were all but through to the FA Cup Fourth Round but the ten men of Birmingham found a late leveller to take the tie back to SJP.The doom mongers didn't get the hoped-for result but the performance at the Britannia Stadium must rank as one of Newcastle's worst under Allardyce.Only the woeful displays at Derby, Wigan and Fulham could rival this inept showing in front of the BBC cameras, as the Magpies stayed in the FA Cup by the skin of their teeth.

Keegan's dream draw in the FA Cup - until the match unfolded, that is. This was the night KK the player decided he would retire at the end of the season after Mark Lawrenson caught and dispossessed him, despite Kev having a two-yard headstart.
Yet another game famous for the incredible support given by 12,000 Geordies, despite the mismatch on the field. This was immortalised later on Match of the Day's opening title sequence which showed Liverpool keeper, Bruce Grobbelaar, conducting the Toon Army choir.1985 Nottingham Forest (a) 1-1 (1-0)

Sweet revenge for Gary Megson on his return to the City Ground. He had been bought by Brian Clough who then voiced the opinion that he couldn't trap a medicine ball and refused to pick him for the first team. Despite being played on a Sunday, the game wasn't televised, simply delayed twenty four hours to allow the pitch conditions to improve.1990 Hull City (a)

The Magpies regained a measure of pride with this narrow victory over the Tigers at Boothferry Park, following the New Years Day mauling from the Wolves.1992 Newcastle sent a team to Federation Park, home of Dunston Federation, to mark the switching of on of their new floodlights. A mixture of juniors and reserves were aided by a three man defence of Ossie Ardiles, Tony Galvin and Derek Fazackerley. Dunston won 2-1 in front of a crowd of around 500, David Robinson netting for United.
The highlight of the evening was a one-woman complaint about the new lights, by a female neighbour who stood in her garden and yelled abuse at the amused spectators.1993 A strong reserve side beat Alnwick Town 10-0 in a home tie in the Northumberland Senior Cup. Alan Thompson and Steve Watson both hit hat-tricks, Andy Hunt got two, Darren McDonough netted a rare goal and Belisle of Alnwick put past his own keeper.2003 The reserve league game against Everton, scheduled for Gateshead Stadium, was called off after bad weather made the pitch unplayable. So no change there then...2005 Tommy Craig's Reserves took a point from their first visit to Damson Park, home of non-league Solihull Borough and on this occasion, Birmingham City reserves.
Trailing at half time to a Matthew Birley shot on 36 minutes, The Magpies hit back with eleven minutes remaining through substitute striker Guy Bates, who netted with a deft flick over Nico Vaesen. But at least as far as the media were concerned, the story of this game centred on the non-performance of Birmingham's want-away midfielder Robbie Savage.
Banished from the first team squad and forced to train on his own, Savage's appearance for the second string put a few on the gate and ensured the presence of press photographers and TV cameras.
The Welsh jessie was booed by some home fans and someone had gone to the trouble of draping a bedsheet with the words "$AV - U HAVE LET US DOWN" over the hoardings behind one goal. Two local urchins were forcibly removed from the ground by stewards just after half time for some unseemly behaviour.

The doom mongers didn't get the result they were hoping for but the performance at the Britannia Stadium must rank as one of the worst under the guidance of Sam Allardyce.Only the woeful displays at Derby, Wigan and Fulham could rival an inept showing in front of the Beeb's cameras as Newcastle stayed in the FA Cup by the skin of their teeth.
