The resilience of the human spirit is a remarkable thing. We see it all about us in many ways every day. It was especially evident here this weekend.
- After winning the WVIAC regular season with a perfect 10-0 record, our #1 in the Conference women’s soccer team was edged 3-2 by #4 Concord on Friday night in the Tournament Semifinal. Special thanks to our two seniors Jackie Krum and Megan Beal for a remarkable season and college career.
- Meantime, our men (#2 in the Conference), having downed #3 Wheeling Jesuit at home in the semifinal on Thursday, taking their conference record to 10-1, dropped a 2-0 heartbreaker to #1 Charleston in the Conference Championship match on Saturday. Thanks especially to seniors Tim O'Toole, Zak Fayer, John-Carlo Rock, Justin Logan, Brett Keatley, Mikey Perez, James Kpainay, Daniel Kwafo, Tristan Wierbonski and Joel Richardson for serving the College and the team so brilliantly
- Seniors Joe Altobelli and Ryan Lichtner completed their cross-country college careers at the NCAA II Atlantic Regional Championship Meet on Saturday. Thanks guys.
On Thursday, the women’s volleyball team opens the 2009 WVIAC Volleyball Tournament in the Charleston Catholic Sports Complex at 9:00 a.m. Then both basketball teams open their regular seasons the following week.
Over on the academic front, D&E’s Zeta Chapter of Chi Beta Phi National Science Honorary was given the Outstanding Chapter Award for the 2008-2009 academic year. Colleges and universities from Arkansas, Indiana, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia were represented in the evaluation.
This past weekend the College reaped the benefits of its church relation in the form of two journeys of spiritual and intellectual self-exploration. Denice Reese led our annual expedition to the ethics conference sponsored by the Men of the Presbyterian Churches of Hilton Head, SC. Over the course of three days in Hilton Head, four of our students—Jennifer Boyle, Samantha Roman, Tillman Ellis and Adam Williams—joined their counterparts from other PC(USA)-related schools in the Southeast to discuss ethically complicated case studies from business and education. Headed north, Bob McCutcheon took two students—Shannon Neuenschwander and Ken Tolley—to Pittsburgh Theological Seminary for a workshop entitled “Discerning Your Call to Mission” designed to encourage and guide students toward service close to home or far afield.
We'll celebrate our veterans (and all others related to the armed forces) on Veterans Day this Wednesday. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., we will join with the larger community at the All Veterans Memorial on the corner below the campus between Walgreens and Scottie's. Following that, at about 12:15, we will dedicate the Pullman Room in Halliehurst as the ‘Veterans Lounge’, thus giving all our veterans and armed forces personnel a place to gather and call "home" on the campus. That evening, Joni and I are inviting all veterans and military personnel (and their spouses) in the college family - students, faculty, staff, retirees - to our home for dinner. Social hour begins at 5:30, with dinner at 6:00.
Everyone is invited - in fact, encouraged - to attend the 11 o'clock community gathering and noontime dedication. If you are a veteran or associated with the military in any way, or know of those within the college family, please RSVP to Joyce Nestor at jbn@DavisAndElkins.edu so we can have an accurate count for dinner that evening.
This is International Week with a Study Abroad Fair beginning at.12 noon on Wednesday in the Benedum Dining Room. Then on Friday evening there's a free public recital by Cellist Jonathan Kramer, Associate Professor of Music, North Carolina State University, and Professor of Ethnomusicology at Duke University at 7:30 p.m. in Halliehurst.
On Friday and Saturday, we will host an international and interdisciplinary conference on "Spirituality, Art and Social Justice" in the Byrd Conference Center. Sponsored by the Center for Spirituality, Ethics and Global Awareness, the conference is attracting distinguished scholars and researchers from the U.S., Canada, Europe, India and South Africa. Selected papers from the conference will be published in an anthology by the Cambridge Scholars Press. Faculty and scholars participating at the conference are from a wide range of disciplines including literature, philosophy, religion, history, sociology and fine arts.
We'll host the fall's largest prospective student Open House on Saturday. Many thanks to the Admission team and all those students, faculty and staff who turn out to help our guests feel so welcome, and catch the D&E spirit.
Joni, Holly and I ventured down to the baseball field in yesterday's 74-degree afternoon sun to take in the baseball team pipe-driving competition as they installed the outfield fence that now encompasses the soccer field. A clear signal of the changing seasons. And that this weekend’s taste of summer will soon end.
