09:47 pmdamnportlandersmetalchick1000 so we're getting rid of some things and i have every intention of posting to CL, but i figured i'd offer it up here first since i got tired of freecyclers flaking out on me and my boyfriend has an aversion to CL (but doesn't want to pay to list them in the local classifieds).
pro: this stuff is cheap!
con: we live in newberg, and we don't deliver.
anyhoo.
full mattress and boxspring: not new, very used, free to good home. might be able to dig up the bed frame, but don't get your hopes up.
foosball table: about a year old, used maybe twice, nothing missing, $40.
washer and dryer set: old but works really damn well. i'm the second owner, paid $100, selling it for $25. dryer door doesn't latch all the way but it does not affect the effectiveness of the machine.
baker's rack: xmas gift from the ex in-laws, i just want it the hell out of my storage unit. free.
old air conditioner: in window unit, quite possibly weighs 400 pounds, missing non essential parts, but still works and incredibly powerful. probably not energy efficient. free, and feel free to snark me for posting this environmentally unfriendly item.
32" lcd tv: by vizio. used for 2 years. $200, includes remote and instruction manual (no stand, sorry).
vacuum cleaner: free to good home. used for ~1 year.
leave me a comment if interested, or email me at entnn AT yahoo DOT com, and i'll get in touch. photos available upon request. 2 comments or Leave a comment 12:01 am January 8th, 2009craig_fergusonkagomeshukoe-mails??? What?!?!?! No e-mails?!?!?! 2 comments 09:46 pm January 7th, 2009

kengwen...little brother? ...speaking of little video-cameras,
I'm wondering if anyone has one of those nanny-cam teddy bears (or something that would work like that, it's to try to video an animal so it's not really important that it be all stealth or anything) that I could borrow or rent for like a week? Barring that, anyone know where you could buy one and how much they go for?

9 comments 09:00 pm January 7th, 2009 I was craving s'mores one day, but the chocolate never gets melted enough for me. Then I remembered a recipe I had read somewhere once, and sprang into action! I found some old (and pretty stale) graham crackers, and dug out an open bag of marshmallows that have been sitting all by their lonesome since Christmas dinner. I discovered that I was lacking chocolate, and since chocolate is an essential part of s'mores, I drug my butt to the gas station down the street to scoop up a bunch of Hershey bars (I got a weird look from the clerk, since I was buying 8 or 9 bars of chocolate). Then I crushed the graham crackers and put them in a big bowl, with the rest of the bag of marshmallows and mixed it all together. Then I melted the Hershey bars and dumped the chocolate on top of the crumb and marshmallow mixture, and mixed mixed mixed! Once everything is coated, start scooping blobs of it out onto a greased cookie sheet (or greased foil). Put the cow pie-looking blobs into the fridge till they set, then have at 'em! These did not go over well in the hoity-toity cooking groups, so I figure they belong here!
The cast of characters:
( One more behind the cut )
They are so freaking good. I can easily sit and eat a whole batch while slugging down half a jug of milk (stright out of the jug, of course). Try them! They're so worth it.smokeyourgenderTweets for Today

damnportlanderswillie_randolphTouching me, touching you. Holy shit, I have four free tickets to see Neil Diamond at the Rose Garden tomorrow night. Why are they free? OK, backstory:My boss bought these last summer and chose the print-out method of receiving tickets instead of getting the hard copies. The concert WAS scheduled for Monday, Sept. 22 but ol' Neil canceled due to a bout with the laryngitis (or something) and was rescheduled for TOMORROW, January 8th. I called the Rose Garden box office and was told that these tickets will still be honored at the door. However...Neil's September engagement featured an "in-the-round" stage design, and these tickets (Sec. 110, Row J, seats 18,19,20,21 respectively) were "primo" for that kind of stage schematic (right up front). Well, it has recently come to our attention that Neil's make-up show tomorrow features a more traditional stage setup, which looks like this:
Did you see where Sec. 110 is? Yeah, I know. Not quite so primo anymore, but good seats nonetheless!
Why didn't my boss get a refund when we found out the show was postponed? Because the Rose Quarter people said that these tickets would be honored at the door. However, we didn't anticipate the changed stage setup, and by the time we found out about it the 30 days had passed in order to get a refund/seat-change. So, my boss bought four MORE seats in the third row on the floor (he's a generous fella) and told me to "get rid of" these tickets we got stuck with. They look like this:
Well, it turns out people couldn't care less about buying computer-printed tickets on eBay or Craigslist, even at massively discounted rates (remember, theses tix originally sold for $120.00 each!). And now...my point:
Who wants four FREE tickets to see Neil Diamond tomorrow night? Please respond with a "Why Neil Diamond Matters To Me" essay. The one I deem most creative/entertaining wins the tickets and I shall make arrangements tomorrow for pick-up.
Sorry for such a long-winded and verbose post, dear DamnPortlanders, but THESE ARE FOUR FREE NEIL DIAMOND TICKETS! 4 comments or Leave a comment 05:05 pm January 7th, 2009blot
Tukwila, WA. Family sues school for failing to protect their autistic son from bullying>
Many people have accepted that there is little a school district can do to prevent bullying. That is simply not so. A few years ago I sent my oldest son to live with his dad in Colorado. The programs Colorado has developed (post Columbine) to identify and counsel future bulliers is amazing. They take children who fit the profile of a future bullier and educate them. They take these children and turn them into ambassadors and diplomats in the classroom.
I would like to see more states follow the example of Colorado.
In so many ways this up-and-coming generation has so much more going for it than we did. We being the feral alumni of latchkey child rearing. It is very obvious that Voltron raised a few of us.Tags:latchkey bullies

what do you consider the definition of a feminist? 41 comments 04:30 pm January 7th, 2009adamsbjaBig Brother to the people So with the availability of miniature cameras or even video, plus the accessibility of the internet, we're entering an era where common folk can essentially have a monitoring network to police authority figures. We've seen it in action during elections, and in some cases of police misconduct, and it's only going to get more common. But before we do so, there is one important question we should answer:What should we call it?

03:09 pmc_is4_catherineMarinating Tofu I'm planning on making stir fry tomorrow night, and I have this Trader Joe's General Tso Sauce that I love that I am going to put on it. I usually just toss pressed tofu in with the vegetables to stir fry, but this time I was thinking I'd try to marinate it to get more flavor. I was thinking of trying the method on this page: How to Cook Tofu like the Pros
Basically, I was thinking I'd marinate the tofu in the General Tso's sauce, but it seems thick for a marinade. Should I thin it out with a bit of water, or some soy sauce or something? Does anybody have any other tastyyy ideas?

I can run over my lunch for any groceries necessary, so ingredients won't be an issue.

budget_gourmetlavendertattooCliantro and limited budget/food question I have a ton of fresh cilantro and only a limited amount of food to cook it with. Does anyone know if cilantro and fresh string beans would go well together? Or cilantro in a salad with endive and fennel? I have some ground beef, but my boyfriend doesn't want to put in the picadillo he's making tonight. I love cilantro and would hate for it to go to waste. I also have some frozen peas w/ pearl onions, and frozen sugar snap peas. I have brown rice, limes, and lemons. I have black beans, garbanzo beans and kidney beans. I have Cherry tomatoes and two crappy quality russet potatoes. Not much else (oh, I have garlic, fresh rosemary, onions and assorted dry herbs, sour cream, ketchup, mustard, etc.). This food would be for tonight and tomorrow.Any help would be much appreciated!!!If this isn't the right place for this, I'll remove it.

7 comments 10:41 pm January 6th, 2009 I need a few good headshots (digital) for resumes and work-profiles. I'm not willing to pay mega-bucks, but I figured there might be some well-trained amateurs or out-of-work photographers here who might want a cheap gig. They have to be digital. If you want to play with retouching, then I'd let you go for it. I really can only go for $20-30. I KNOW it's very little, but I would rather not hand it over to the Sears Portrait Studio if someone here could use the cash. Inside or outside scenery is fine, your choice. Technical or industrial settings would delight me.
I do need someone with a bit of training, as pale-faced-redheads-with-glasses aren't the easiest to shoot and come out decently. That being said, no, I do not have a friend who could do snapshots that are worth anything. I have a not-cheap but older Canon camera, if someone has some skillz, but thinks my camera would be fine. I have no idea how to make it do really good portrait photos, I've only done outdoor action shots with it.

::amused::cookingfaoiltiamaBacking Up Recipes I'm not trying to be a Chicken Little here, but there has been some buzz on my f-list about how Livejournal is in financial peril and there has been some speculation that this could be the beginning of the end (*THUNDERCLAP*). Like I said, this is ALL SPECULATION and completely UNCONFIRMED HEARSAY about LJ tanking (though they did layoff a lot of their stateside staff), but just in case I've backed up my journal and I'm planning on making hard copies of all the recipes here that I've added to memories and bookmarks. I thought some of you might want to do likewise, just in case.Has there been any conversation about commuting the community over to another journal service if LJ does tank? I'd hate to lose y'all as a resource!

zine_scenebreatheinjuneSubmissions for a lit zine Well, I haven't been part of the "zine scene" in years, but recently, after losing my job, I've been wanting to get back into it, and I want to start a lit zine.Aaaand I am currently looking for submissions and contributions. I am looking for a broad spectrum of things, from photography to poems and stories. Ideally, you would be willing to put it under a Creative Commons license. However, if you do not feel comfortable with releasing your work under a CC license, you obviously are not obligated to do so.
One idea I'm REALLY excited about is to have people do readings of their own poems and stories. I want to have both a web and print version of the zine, so having people download the readings would not be a problem. Since this is an option, having people's music and songs is also an option to be part of the zine, so if you are a musician, feel free to submit a song or two.
The rest of the "info sheet" is posted on my LiveJournal: http://breatheinjune.livejournal.com/249557.html
The theme for the first issue is "New Beginnings" to go along with the new year. Take that as you will. It can relate as tangentially as you'd like. The initial deadline for submissions is January 25, 2009. I say "initial" because I am not sure how quickly submissions will come. My goal is to get the first issue put together by the end of January/beginning of February, with the latest possible being mid-February.
If you want to contribute anything or have any questions, my email is june.owatari@gmail.com or you can reply to the post. I can take submissions in practically any format (for example, if you write in Open/NeoOffice, feel free to leave it as .odt rather than re-saving it as a .doc ).
Thanks guys! If you know anybody else who might be interested, feel free to link them to this entry or to my LJ entry. I'd really appreciate it if you guys had any suggestions or ideas for the zine too.Current Location:California

By request of my mom, A and I were asked to show her our food-making skills that she heard and saw so much about. And then we found out that she wanted us to do it for Christmas dinner. Granted, we celebrate Christmas as all secular, non-Christian families do in this day and age, but it's still a big deal to us. This was the first time A and I ever planned a large, formal meal, but we were up to the challenge, and we wanted to be sure to go all the way and not skimp out on the opportunity.
( Enjoy! ) 07:39 pm January 6th, 2009cookingevil_momfreezing cooked pasta? For dinner tonight I made a baked pasta dish: rigatoni with tomato sauce, and I melted some cheese on top (cheddar-mozzarella blend, if it matters).I figured it would make 6 portions, bur I totally underestimated: I have 6 portions of leftovers. Can I freeze them, or will they turn out weird??
Plz halp. 7 comments 04:05 pm January 6th, 2009cookinglittlelamblong days and tired of costco clif bars! hello, cooking! i'm a law student and by the time my second year rolled around, i had gone up a size, which was quite unfortunate, because i had to buy another suit. over this winter break, i stopped buying cheese (which was pretty much my one vice when i actually cooked, because all i really eat anyway is pasta and frozen vegetables or frozen veggie items like boca burgers) and oatmeal. i lost 5 lbs, and i'd rather keep this up. but long story short, it's difficult for me to keep it up during school because, for instance, next semester, my classes go from 9 am until 8.30 pm (2 days out of the week, 9.30 pm), and i live 40 minutes away, so i can't just nip back home and eat well. for the past 1.5 years, i've pretty much been living on clif bars or half a pb&j and then coming back home famished and eating lots of fatty take out on the way home. not so good!
my restrictions are these: i'm really tired so not really big on cooking every night (especially when i leave at 7 and come home after 9 or 10), allergic to nuts, and can store the prepacked food in a fridge. any ideas? i feel a little stuck and totally unhealthy. i'm sorry if this seems really restrictive. hope you can help! 25 comments 07:06 pm January 6th, 2009budget_gourmetmary_mayhemRed rice casserole 2 c. tomato juice

02:35 pmfood_porngadaev happy new year to you all.
on january 1st, 2009, i proposed to my girlfriend. well, now she's my fiance. she accepted it and i proposed her in san diego. the location is coronado island. it was beautiful place and the weather was perfect. my friends were happy about it. so i decided to make a dinner for all of us. i made salmon with whole-wheat spaghetti, spinach, and garlic. i also made salad and orange vinaigrette. yes, it's from scratch. i know you will say like duh. ha. pardon me, ladies and gentlemen.
results? they loved it. whew. i was little nervous. but i managed it. why nervous? three of them looked at me while i prepped. at school, i was fine because we worked together. at my friend's home, i don't work with them, i did it by myself. overall, they loved it and i managed it. whew.
okay, what did i make? what ingredients? what did i do? here it is:
- whole-wheat spaghetti, spinach, sliced garlic to mix together. yes, after cooking.
- salad: sliced red onion, two cantaloupes; cubes, cherry tomatoes, cut half, and spinach. i wanted arugula but vons, it's name of supermarket in san diego and they don't have it anymore so i took spinach. i was little disappointed but it's okay.
- salmon, once again. i planned to cook halibut but they don't have it. i took salmon instead. i added salt and pepper. oh, i also added lemon juice to marinated. and green onions for garnish.
- orange vinaigrette dressing: 4 oranges, red raspberry vinegar, shallot and garlic minced, salt and pepper to taste.
wanna recipe for this, let me know.( here are the pictures ) 2 comments or Leave a comment 04:51 pm January 6th, 2009budget_gourmetmary_mayhemRice I like rice. I, mostly, learned to eat it in South Carolina. It used to be a huge crop there, so everyone got used to eating it and it is used in just about every recipe. Kinda like Louisiana. One trick I learned there is red rice and sausage. You saute an onion and a bell pepper, coarsely chopped, slice up half a kielbasa or other smoked sausage, mix all of that in a casserole dish with a cup of uncooked white rice and 2 cups of tomato juice. Bake that for an hour, covered, at 350.
Tasty, filling and fairly inexpensive.
Another quick and easy recipe is Cheesy Chicken. (I got this one from my MIL.
Place boneless chicken in the bottom of a casserole dish. Combine 2 cups of grated cheddar with 1 large can of cream of mushroom soup or 1 small can of cream of mushroom soup and 1 small can of cream of chicken soup. Bake at 350 for an hour. Serve over rice.
Frankly, I liked the sauce that came out of that over the rice better than I liked the chicken. Maybe I should try just combining COM with just cheese and see what happens.
Another trick I learned was beans and rice. I've been known to cook dried beans (and do it well) but, frankly, canned beans are fine and, over brown rice, they are tasty and filling.
Margaret Holmes makes Field Peas with Jalapeños that is GREAT. The jalapeños really aren't hot, but do give the beans a nice flavor. I can't find 'em everywhere, so I tend to buy a couple or 3 cans when I do find 'em to keep in the cupboard for the night that I just don't feel like cooking big.
Black beans are good, too. If I feel like decorating those, I put a dollop of sour cream (or plain yogurt) and a nice sprinkle of grated cheddar on it.
And I like tomatoes and okra. Half a can on top of a cup of brown rice with a little sprinkle of hot sauce is a meal for moi.
Canned stuff over rice is quick, easy and filling. I am sooooooooooo about that. I usually fix 1 scoop of stuff to 2 scoops of rice. Chuck likes more stuff and less rice. Hot sauce makes us both happy.
He taught me a trick about cooking rice, too. You can put a cup of rice and 2 cups of water in a pot, let it boil for 30 minutes and then just turn it off. Leave it on the eye for 20 minutes and it is done without boiling over or being crunchy. Leave a comment 01:22 pm January 6th, 2009damnportlanders
sassyleoCuriosity about Oregon resources...
03:21 pm January 6th, 2009 Has anyone been given federal aid/help by the Oregon Unemployment Department for career retraining? I'm curious if it is still being offered in light of the economy dump. Aside from that, is the process to get back in school harder/easier? More/less competitive? Financial resources available?
Maybe there is hope...
"If you've recently been laid off, you've probably had someone tap you on the shoulder and tell you something like: "Out of crisis comes opportunity," or "When one door closes, another opens." It probably feels a little pat, but the truth is that many workers will use the downturn to switch out of a slow-growth career—and into work with a much more promising future."
The 30 Best Careers for 2009.
Seriously...I work for a healthcare organization and even though most employers in the area are hiring minimally...mine has 30+ listings for RN's.
Or how about a Genetic Counselor?
For the record, I am happily employed and in general feel OK about my job stability...but it doesn't hurt to be aware.cooking
wint3rhartRoast beef (or other) sandwich melt My husband had a helluva day today, and I'd like to make something tasty for dinner to sort of help make up for it. Comfort food around here means melted cheese, and also I've got some sub rolls that need using up.My idea so far involves sliced meat of some sort, probably from the deli (meaning no gravy) and provolone cheese. I am not opposed to using bbq sauce or spicy mustard, both of which What would you want on a sandwich of this type to make it Really, Really Good? 14 comments or Leave a comment 04:09 pm January 6th, 2009
