What's with the ICP? What's the deal with the Insane Clown Posse? Every time I go to the Vancouver Westfield Mall, I see at least 3-5 people roaming the place in some sort of ICP clothing. They all look the same as well. Not to be too derogatory but they do look mentally deficient in some way. What attracts these people to this particular band and/or lifestyle of being a "Juggalo"? And why is Vancouver the only place I've been that has these people roaming the streets? I think I've seen a few people on the outskirts of the Portland area wearing but not nearly to the extent the i've seen in Vancouver. Maybe they're hiding in Gresham? I kid and yet I don't. 3 comments20 comments3 comments 10:04 pm November 17th, 2008 12 comments3 comments

damnportlandersherince_emynNanny questions!!
01:57 am November 18th, 2008 I've been nannying for two different families for the past 3 months but now I'm in a bind. One family was 3 days a week, the other 2 days a week. Due to the economy, both families are scaling back to the equivalent of 1 day each and I am panicking. I have 2 questions:
[1] Does anyone need a nanny? At least 3 days a week or full time? I have experience with all ages, my youngest being 4 months old, I have a car and I have great references. And I'm pretty damn fun, kids love me. For real. :D
[2] Has anyone used Care Givers Placement Agency, Inc. or know anything about them? If I register with them, where are they making their money? Do they get a cut of my check, or does the family pay them and they pay me? I'm trying to figure out if it would be a good idea to apply with them or not.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated! Both the families told me about their cutbacks like, 2 weeks apart and it's definitely making me a tad stressed out. I thank you in advance!Current Mood:

Current Music: The Clarks - Queen Of AmericacookingpunkpoetSubstitution for Cream of Tartar Experiences I'd like to make some snickerdoodle cookies this weekend. I have all of the ingredients except for the 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar. I really don't want to go out to pick some up just for this event. I did some light google and found that white vinegar and lemon juice can be used instead but I don't have either of those either (I have rice vineger but I don't think that's quite the same).
I read that you can use baking powder instead as baking powder is just a combination of baking soda and cream of tartar (among other things) at 1/4 baking soda & 5/8 cream of tartar. I was wondering if you guys had any experiences with substituting something else, particularly baking powder, for cream of tartar in cookies (like snickerdoodles). I'll be using this recipe: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Mrs-Siggs-Snickerdoodles/Detail.aspx

So I'd like to make a recommendation, since I've seen a lot of people come on here and ask about vets.
Last night our kitty had a stroke which left her completely debilitated and blind, so we took her in to the Southeast Portland Animal Hospital on Stark. My boyfriend looked up places to take her at that late hour, and found that a different one in town had some bad reviews and they were a lot more expensive.
At Southeast Portland Animal Hospital they were very professional and courteous, very compassionate, and let us take all the time we needed with our kitty before and after the euthanasia. They treated us with the utmost respect, and their prices were very reasonable. The woman at the front desk even conducted herself in a professional and compassionate manner when she charged us for the fees. For the exam, hazardous waste fee, euthanasia and cremation, it came to just under $300.
Considering all of this took place from 1-3 in the morning, I think that's pretty good. The lady vet who was working was also very nice, and I could see that she really cared about us and our sweet girl. 18 comments 12:09 am November 18th, 2008damnportlanders

I invented it a couple of weeks ago and we have had it once a week as a dinner special since then and she just adores it and says she'd keep me as a chef for that dish alone--and she isn't a vegetarian. But she is right--it is really, really good. And it is so autumnal--and I think that it is a perfect blend of native American fruits, Indian lentils and Indian cooking technique. It is the kind of fusion dish that is full of heart and soul, because it was created with utter respect for the ingredients and the traditions that are being blended together.optimistic

trashy_eatskyos_the_schmex a couple recent trashy recipes.
last night i was making ramen via microwave, yay college. well, i had broken it up and i was about to put it in the microwave when i started eating it crunchy. it was positively amazingly gross and awesome. i probably wouldn't do it often, but i honestly don't mind crunchy ramen..
"southwestern tortilla" soup from the student union's food court.. is basically really watery salsa. so i came home, diced up some velveeta, stuck it in the microwave for about 3 minutes, stirred it up.. and decided it still wasn't good enough. so i put a gross amount of ketchup into it. it was instantly better. it was amaaaaazing after i doctored it up, let me tell you.
and right now i'm eating popcorn with ketchup. it's so good. so so so good. but i have neither enough popcorn or enough ketchup to satisfy my hunger so i think i'll make some ramen .. cause i'm out of real food. i need to steal more food from my school cafeteria. i mean, go grocery shopping. okay, both.Current Music: Tool - Lateralus | Powered by Last.fm

darnessfreezing soup I am currently making a sausage/potato/leek soup, and the batch is large enough where I know I'll have leftovers to freeze. The recipe calls for adding 1/3 cup whipping cream toward the end. Is this going to cause an issue when freezing the leftovers? (i.e. the ratio of cream [1/3 cup] to chicken soup broth [12 cups] seems pretty large, but I hear that freezing a cream-based soup is not a great idea) Any thoughts or tips? 1 comment 05:51 pm November 17th, 2008

I go to bed listening to music all the time. One time I went to sleep listening to David Bowie, and hey, I had a dream with him in it. Last night I had Tool playing a song called "L.A.M.C" and in my dream everyone called the cops about the loud banging noise. Does this happen to anyone else? debunkingwhitecoathangrrrOne Laptop Per Child The One Laptop per Child(OLPC) project has just started a "give one, get one" sale on Amazon.com, where you can buy one of their laptops and your purchase funds the purchase of another laptop for a child somewhere in the "emerging world". I've been following the group doing this for a while and it seems like a good thing to me. There's been a general response by critics of "why don't they just buy them books?"(that's me responding about getting stuck with out of date books a few years down the line, etc.)It seems that this criticism is based in a very privileged point of view, where everyone speaks your language, English, and schools everywhere function just like they do in the United States for reasonably well off white people. That seems straight forward for me. But I wonder if there isn't some other criticism necessary. The fact that I, and all of us here, communicate by computer(have computer privilege?) may cloud my understanding of whether this is a good thing. So the question I have is this: Does pushing for this program, and encouraging more people to learn how to use computers and live in a world where computers are a fact of life, represent an aspect of colonialism(techno-colonialism?), or is this generally a good thing, with perhaps some negative aspects? 13 comments 05:25 pm November 17th, 2008

trashy_eats__ataraxisTrashy breakfast for dinner. My husband left on Saturday to go do training for the Navy and when he leaves I crave the trashiest and usually greasiest things ever. And comfort food.
This afternoon was no exception. I wanted trashy, greasy and comforting. So, when I woke up at 3pm this afternoon and found my sister, who had apparently just woken up too standing in front of the open fridge, I knew magic was going to happen. But then she said 'There's nothing here to eat'.
After shoving her out of the way, I found the following: left over tater tots, left over Steak Umms, some diced onions, and some mozzarella cheese. Yes. I was going to make a philly cheesesteak omelet. With hashbrowns.
In one skillet, I threw in half the onions and the tator tots and mushed them around and fried til they were hashbrown-like. In another skillet I poured in 4 scrambled eggs, and let cook then covered it with the mozzarella cheese, then laid down the Steak Umms and put in some more onions and folded it over. Then my sister found some Jimmy Dean Sausage Biscuits in the freezer and we nuked those and put some American cheese slices on those.
We sat down with our omelets and hashbrowns and sausage biscuit and proceeded to cover it all in ketchup (my sister added chili powder to all of her stuff). It was om nom nom.Current Location: home.

dark_syrenAny Mac Gurus in the House? Help!
I have a black MacBook I bought in May. (I have no idea how much ram or anything else it has, I just know it was the fastest regular macbook they had at the time.)
I am working for a creative consultant and have been creating documents with text and pictures in Pages, thinking that they would convert just fine to Word. (I only have Pages on my Mac. )
Wrong!
I am not able to open my document in Word on the Macs at school (PSU.) I get a message saying that it is a blocked file because it "may pose a security threat." I cannot e-mail my Pages document directly to my Mac using employer as my laptop has decided it hates attachments. (I have tried e-mailing from Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo. No dice.)
It costs $49.00 to have AppleCare tech support talk to me over the phone. I tried chatting with a dude on the Apple website and he kept telling me to save it as a .doc but that option is no where to be found.
I just made the switch to Mac because I wanted to simplify my life. Buying and installing Word for Mac is not an option right now, as my project is due now.
Can anyone help? I will barter for your services! I can bake, clean, pet sit, do laundry, etc. Please help a befuddled college student! Thanks DP! 13 comments 06:46 pm November 17th, 2008trashy_eatsa_foxie_smileBreakfast of champions 1 large McDonalds milkshake brought home and emptied into a bowl.Add a randomly poured out amount of kelloggs ricicles (frosted rice krispy things).#

divalionThe Poor Bohemian's Feast Last week, my beloved and I were due to entertain visitors from out of town, friends we see maybe once a year. We were too tight on cash to go out to dinner with them, so I suggested I would dig out something from the freezer to whip up for everyone.
Then two of our more local friends asked if they could join the festivities and see these visiting buddies also, and of course I said sure.
Then I realized that my other two housemates might be home for dinner as well.
So there I am, with less than twenty bucks to my name until payday, contemplating the larder and trying to figure out how to feed eight people using only the ingredients that were already in the house.

This made me remember something I'd been wondering for a little while. Has anyone used ceramic knives? Do they work just as well (or better) than steel? I would love to hear your thoughts on them, and whether it would be worth spending the money on them.Thank you. 01:33 am November 17th, 2008
blackjackrocket OK so first I get a letter on my Hotmail asking me to confirm my "request for information from the isjustfree group". I think nothing of it, but then I get a message immediately after to the same email (which I ONLY USE FOR MSN) thanking me for signing up for internet.com email.
Then I check my regular email and there's another isjustfree letter...and a subscription notification to something called "Beliefnet".
I've never heard of any of these places, and that they're hitting both my emails at the same time makes me think someone's doing this on purpose. What can I do about it? 16 comments 12:58 am November 17th, 2008damnportlanders
tthayerMarylhurst living situations Damned Portlanders;
I am finding my living situation to be not very useful for going to school. Spending 4+ hours a day using Trimet's wondrous bus system is leaving me feeling cold about the whole thing. Does anyone have any information about places opening up in West Linn?
I am pursuing a photography degree at Marylhurst, which has somehow translated into me starting to collect painting and darkroom equipment that no longer really fits into my current living situation. I also have two adorable cats.
I'll be looking at moving around the 1st of the year. Any useful information will be rewarded with a bounty of pie and lavish praise.Current Location: N Portland

Here is a salad I had regularly made this summer, though I'm sure swapping out the fruit for anything else acidic would be great.

divalionThe Poor Bohemian's Feast Last week, my beloved and I were due to entertain visitors from out of town, friends we see maybe once a year.

Moving Day and What It Means for You
Moving What Where?
The long-awaited server move takes place this Tuesday, November 18, at 8:00 a.m. PST. We're moving the site from servers based in San Francisco to the servers in our new data center in Montana. A massive data move like this takes a lot of heavy lifting, and to haul all that data from San Francisco to Montana, we have to take the site down, starting at 8:00 a.m. PST on Tuesday morning. We don't think the move will take more than four hours, but there's always the possibility that it could take longer (the best laid plans and all).
What Does This Mean for You?
During the downtime, nothing on LJ will be available—no posting, no Friends page, no LJ mail, nada. When we bring the site back up, we're going to ease into it rather than open up a floodgate of traffic. Posting might not be immediately available or the site could be slow to load for a while.
New servers mean new IP addresses, so it's possible that LJ mail might not reach your email inbox because your email provider or client doesn't recognize the new IP addresses. We're working with email providers to whitelist the new IPs. There are a few things you can do on your end:
- Add these two IP addresses to your "allowed senders" list (or whitelist) and address book in your email client: 208.93.0.18 and 208.93.0.50. These are the new IPs for sending comments notifications and LJ mail to your email inbox.
- Add lj_notify@livejournal.com and webmaster@livejournal.com to your email address book.
If you can't edit the spam or junk filters in your email client, you may need to disable them entirely. Make these changes just before 8:00 a.m. PST on Tuesday morning or shortly after the site comes back up to ensure that your LJ mail makes it to your inbox.
Those of you who use domain aliasing to forward your domain to your LiveJournal will need to create a CNAME record that maps to livejournal.com. Please note that we're no longer supporting the A record. For more information, check the domain forwarding FAQ.
Before the move, you can checklj_maintenance for complete details about the planned downtime. During the move, you can check status.livejournal.org for updates about the site's status.
Permanent Account Sale Delayed
We regret to inform you that due to the server move, the Permanent Account sale has been pushed back to December 4, rather than November 20 as announced in the last news post. After the virtual dust has settled from the move, we'll be able to turn our attention to the Permanent Account sale. Except for the start date, the details remain the same: You have a limited opportunity to purchase LJ for life for only $175. It's a bummer to delay the sale, but on the bright side, you have more time to save up.
But What About A La Carte Userpics?
We know we promised more information about a la carte userpics, and we're sorry that details have not been forthcoming (blame it on the move). We're still planning on having a la carte userpics, but we don’t have any details yet. When the move is over, we'll have more information. We're sorry for the delay. 219 comments 01:32 am November 17th, 2008trashy_eatslonelyinheavenjarred pasta sauce I ran out of my hoard of frozen homemade pasta sauce, and now have to go the jarred route. I like pretty traditional sauce, but not chunky though I could always puree it if it's delicious enough to warrant the extra effort. Any suggestions of which brands/styles to try? Prego vs. Ragu? 10:11 pm November 16th, 2008
bluejaywayfeel the love am coming back to portland tomorrow. really glad, cannot wait to smell my house again. I'm reading jitterbug perfume and smells just keep coming up in my peripherals. I've been talking a lot about rhythm and energy this weekend. dudes, I am on my period right now, and it started when I was talking to my cousin katie about my mom. I totally think that when it comes to my kooky period, sometimes it just happens with an overload of womanpower. then I find out that, like, three other women I came in contact with this weekend were also on their period. THERE IS A RHYTHM.
ha I tried to talk to my cousin katie, who is externally sort of a dirty hippie, except that she showers and is really pretty, about the diva cup, and she would not have it. ha. god, I just keep adopting more and more, uh, how do I put this, I Guess You Live In Portland, Huh? things. it's usually frustrating, but sometimes funny, to see the clashes between the way I used to live & some of the ways I live now.
my parents have really been pretty great this weekend. we've avoided a lot of the more difficult conversation material, like obama, anything political, et cetera. they've been totally cool toward me, and I know it's a lot of "okay let's just deal and not get pissed about this thing, because we're only together for a weekend," stuff, but I'm still impressed with the level of compromise. like, today, I spent all day in bed, which when I lived there even over college breaks, would have been completely not okay, especially since it was a direct result of how much I drank last night. but I was so, so hung over that I couldn't move without nausea. and I was nauseous anyway, laying down.
I've spent most of my time in peoria with katie, which has been great. we have some intersecting wavelengths, yknow? she is, other than living in peoria & not wanting to be living there, in a pretty good place in her life. we went to crusens both friday and saturday night, which is a bar that smells like vomit at all times and serves mostly coors, but also goose island & boulevard. I saw bands that I would not ordinarily see, but both nights were fantastic, really, really fantastic. the men in this bar were totally fucking horrific in their assumptions of okay behavior toward women, but the people in my immediate surroundings were wonderful to talk with again. sometimes I really catch leo-fire in having a lot of people around me, and happily, I was able to make that happen this weekend for the most part.
unrelated to everything: I have noticed myself telling white lies a lot lately. talk about annoying. I find myself weighing "will this person ever be able to verify if there was a mountain in the back of this picture that without the description of this mountain in the picture it would be a way lamer story" before I tell the white lie. okay, now that I have ljconfessed, now I will stop. I think sometimes with confronting flaws, it takes, for me, confronting it enough to the point where I have to look at how silly it really is.
sorry for posting another meme, but golly, this one was funny & spooky/stupid sometimes. other times, like the thirty seven thousand mountain goats songs it found, it's ( retarded. )Current Music: modest mouse - medication
4 comments 10:23 pm November 16th, 2008damnportlandersxkagomexcomputer help Long rant...So I've been really frustrated with my wireless network. Everyone in my apartment can connect to the internet except for me. It says my wireless connection is excellent but it won't display any web pages. Once in awhile I can connect to another wireless connection, but it is unreliable. I thought maybe it was my ethernet card, so I took it to Best Buy, where I got it and they sent it off to California. They charged me $80 and ended up telling me "well it works with our internet"
I feel like I have tried everything. I did a system restore, I reset the router/modem, I disabled and enabled a million different things. I'm not an expert, but generally pretty good at computer problems. But I cannot figure this out. I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, and the internet used to work great on it. In the connection settings, there is a red X over one of the connections, which is obviously the problem....something with the local area connection.
Anyway to the point, does anyone know how to fix this and if not - where can I take it in Portland that won't cost me everything I own? I want to avoid places like best buy and circuit city because I don't trust them anymore. They didn't even TRY hardly. I need this computer for school and I can't really afford a lot right now. Help!! =) 8 comments 10:11 pm November 16th, 2008misaladyToday's Twitters
