Have you heard about this show? Ever watched it? I watched it once. I could've sworn that I'd seen something similar.... What do you think of it? I think the people on it were seriously annoying.

Pardon the self-linking, but I wrote a post on my Doc Blog today about talking to your therapist about suicidal thoughts, and I'm trying to get it out there and shared around. So many of my clients have told me that they hold things like this in, in fear of being "committed" or involuntarily checked into the hospital, and as a consequence they don't get to talk about things in a way that might help a lot. I have nearly lost a couple of people to the silence, and I'd like to do my part to help people speak up.If you could share where you see fit, that would be great. Thank you!Now back to your regularly-scheduled DamnFrivolity. Happy Halloween!

Hi!So, it's been a long time since I've lived in a neighborhood that was popular with trick-or-treaters. Currently I live on a somewhat dark and rather steep hill, so I don't expect too many tonight either. However, I'm always curious on what peeps think about various aspects of trick-or-treating etiquette. Please chime in with your thoughts on any and all:1) How early is too early to trick-or-treat?2) How late is too late?3) How old is too old?4) What quantity of candy-per-kid is appropriate?
Also:
Post a pic of your own, and/or your kid's (or kids') costume(s)!

Not long agostellthebell resurrected a classic breakfast dish: corned beef hash with eggs.
Well, here's another one: the croque-madame. Not strictly authentic (I used medium cheddar because, dammit, I love cheddar), and not strictly breakfast food, but still...three slices of French toast, two over-easy eggs, a veritable slab of cheddar, and four slices of deli ham. What's not to love?
Hey, Jacques Pepin loved these...2 comments or

Oh my goodness, I love this recipe.
This melt-in-your-mouth pumpkin spice cake is warm, moist, and delicious. It contains gooey caramel and toasted pecans. And to say it's easy is an understatement -- you can make it in one skillet (even if you decide to toast some pecans and make some streusel to throw in it -- which I highly recommend -- there are minimal dishes) in about 35 minutes! This is the perfect recipe to whip up on a whim and eat in your PJs on the couch. Devour it straight from the skillet with a pile of ice cream.

There are definitely nice things about starting autumn. My dad came home with a case of Antonovka apples he got at the farmers market. I could tell what was in his bag standing 5 meters away from him. The apples instantly filled the house with their strong aroma. I couldn't help baking apple something. Not that I don't like them fresh, but I can't stand cold food this time of the year. These apples beautifully develop their flavor when baked and they are strong enough for you to taste them in muffins.

I'm new to the area (been here about a month and a half) and am getting damn sick of my air mattress. There are so many mattress shops out here that it's hard to figure out where to start. I've been to a few already on the hunt for a couch, but I'm not sure what's a good going rate for a decent mattress. So I turn to you, damnportlanders. My goal is to not spend a fuckton of money (sorry, amazing $1000+ memory foam mattresses) and not sleep on a futon (back is already fuct.)Thanks in advance!

So, I got a parking ticket. I don't mind paying parking tickets when I deserve them (well, I mind, but I pay them) but I really don't deserve this one! The violation was "No Meter Receipt" and comment is "no receipt curb side, checked all windows, dash, seat, and floor for rec pay during meter hours." But that's not true! I was parked on NW 13th (X street Everett), car facing south, on the west side of the street, with the meter receipt on the top of the passenger side window. I remember this specifically... I got into the car after pulling the ticket off the windshield and asked my mom to hand me the receipt I'd stuck in the passenger side window so I could try to figure out why I'd gotten a ticket. It does say at the very bottom of the ticket "photos 4" so I assume that means they have photos. I am very interested to see those, because that ought to prove me right. It's a $40 ticket, which is pretty hefty, plus, I wasn't in violation! So I want to fight it. The yellow envelope directs me to portlandtransportation.org for more info, but it's not very helpful.I have gathered that my options are to pay the bail and write a written explanation and see if the judge decides to refund some or all of my bail OR pay the bail and send a written request for a hearing OR to go to court to contest it. The website says where to go to contest it, but no information about WHEN. Any day, M-F, 9-5? I dunno.Am I better off going off with the written explanation or showing up in court? If I send a written request for a hearing, will they assign me a specific time? If I do go to court, how long should I expect to be there? (It probably isn't worth it to me to go that route if I am going to have to be there for more than an hour.) I'd appreciate any advice. Gracias!

We all know that the appropriation of Native culture by hipsters and other white people is an issue, but apparently no one told the Washington Post.(Not that this happening in the city where the "Redskins" is an appropriate team name is surprising.)This Friday, they published a picture of a white woman wearing a head dress on the cover of their "weekend" section. To advertise karaoke bars.
You can see it here, I couldn't find the picture larger. (In case they pull it, I've uploaded it here for posterity.
You can contact the Ombudsman, responsible for ethics, at ombudsman@washpost.com or call 202-334-7521.
You can submit a letter to the editor following these instructions
You can contact the weekend section here: weekend@washpost.com
I've been unable to find out who the editor of the Weekend section is, but the picture was taken by Rebecca D'Angelo and the article was written by Stephanie Merry and Jess Righthand, though I doubt they're responsible for the choice of the picture.
I've included the text that I sent to the Editor and the Ombudsman and the weekend section below the cut.

So I'm in the market for a suit. I've owned exactly one in my life, and it dates from my high school days, which is pathetic. Not that I have cause to wear a suit often, but when I do, I'd like to have something worth wearing.
At first I was on this kick where I was gonna shell out a bit of extra cash for something nice and custom fitted. I checked out Duchess' website and they seem very cool, but then I saw the starting price tag of $1200 and thought, forget it. I don't need a suit that good that badly.
I've checked out a few other websites of local places: Este's, Like A Rockstar, The Lion's Den, and Well Suited. I also talked to a friend who recently got a new suit at Macy's for under $200 that he sounded pretty happy with. Being as inexperienced in the ways of buying suits as I am, I'm starting to get confused, so I thought perhaps some DP'ers had some positive experiences they'd be willing to impart.
Thanks,

On a whim I bought a spaghetti squash at the store today, though I have no clue what it is or what to do with it. lol I saw it and figured I would ask you lovely people for some suggestions! Ha ha. See how much faith I have in you all? It was just a small one and was cheap so I figured I would try it out!I'm not a big veggie eater, but I've been trying to get better at it, so shoot me some recipes and ideas please! Main dish or side is fine, I have a full pantry and fridge, and no diet restrictions. Easy on the hot and spicy though please, I have really low tolerance for heat. Hit me!
