Researchers Requesting Your Help with a Survey
Tony Petrucci, an assistant professor in HR Management with the Fox School of Business at Temple University, is surveying professionals who have become unemployed due to a layoff to see how they are coping with this situation and how they are managing their job search activities. There is no compensation for participating, but you can request a copy of the survey results. In addition the first 200 respondents can select a charity from the list provided to receive a $10 donation from the survey sponsors. This is a highly controversial practice by employers, but it is legal in most states.MOST, not ALL. Personally, I would NEVER provide this unless I was completing an actual employment application, either online or on paper, and ONLY I had completed a background check on the employer!

- Computing & Technology: Career & Education Resources -- added an interview with an IT Manager/Software designer describing her work, how she got into this career, and why she enjoys it so much.
- Executive Search Firms: M N O -- added MJS Executive Search, a boutique retained executive search firm with functional specialties in marketing, sales, digital/interactive, PR & corporate communications, and general management, but they have a unique expertise in recruiting for social media marketing positions. Their industry specialties include consumer goods & services, Internet & e-commerce, entertainment, media & sports, marketing & PR and professional services. Great client list!
- Finance & Accounting: Executive Search firms -- added the Abacus Group, an executive search firm specializing in the permanent and temporary placement of accounting and finance, accounting support and financial service professionals.. Since they are focused on the region around NYC, I also listed them with our resources for New York.

An Entrepreneurship Program Exclusively for Ex-Offenders! JVS of Chicago, IL, is seeking 30 ex-offenders interested in starting or expanding a small business to join their Entrepreneurship Program. As promised, the final one for 2011.
Status of the Backlog: When I return next week I will be checking things dated November 4, 2011.
I have eliminated the page for Certification Resources. The content of that page has been filtered into the site, most under the appropriate job family/industry heading but a few in other spots. Please use my Google search bar to find the new locations for these materials.
A few new things have made it into the guide, many of which came from the Certification page, but I was inspired to do a little bit more in the way of developing a new subject area.
- Engineering: Career Guides -- added the STEMCareer, a resource for students, parents, educators, and counselors to learn more about the many Science, Technology, Engineeing, and Math careers and how to encourage students to pursue these courses of study.

I'm hustling to get the Certification page finished (meaning "transferring the content to other parts of the site and deleting it"), and then I hope to have some sort of update this week. Yes, I have dated the pages for January 2012, but I had a brain freeze and thought it was already 2012. Duh.

Sorry, but no update this week other than updates/edits/corrections which I loaded yesterday. It has been a busy week.
I will not be in the office December 20-24. I will be available December 26-30 and may post an update, although I may take that week and finish a couple of projects on the site

Status of the Backlog: I have reviewed everything submitted before November 2, 2011! Yes, I worked through more than a month of submissions in the past week.
I made some changes to the Google custom search on Riley Guide. Yes, it still searches this site plus 5 others I think you'll find extremely helpful, but now your results will include a tab that says "Riley Guide". Selecting that tab will display results from just this site. The results page also displays a search bar, so if you don't find anything at all you can execute a new search right on that page rather than backing up to another page in the site.
- Male Nurse Puts Up With All The Problems In the ER -- Featured Article. This man left a career in forestry to become a nurse. He describes his work in the ER and his plans for the future.
- Woman Entomologist Found Her Calling -- Featured Article. Yes, her work is buggy, but she enjoys it
- How to Find the Right Link for Your Next Job -- Featured Article. This 50+ sales manager discovered that LinkedIn could be a useful tool in his search, but offering a bit of free advice based on his many years of experience was a very profitable task.
