RINGO STARR - Ringo 2012 (2012)
"Ringo 2012" is the fabulous sound of a man you know and love working in the groove of a lifetime and making an album with nine songs that vividly reflect his life yesterday and today. "This album is me doing what I do here and now," says Ringo, "and nobody's more qualified to do that than I am!" In fact, one of the only things that didn't come easy for Ringo Starr making Ringo 2012 was the title. Ringo 2012 cannot help but recall the title of another classic album by Starr, 1973's Ringo -- in fact, Ringo 2012 features a startlingly new and improved version of "Step Lightly' from the massively successful Ringo, as well as "Wings" from 1978's Ringo The 4th.
Ringo Starr's 17th solo studio record, titled simply "Ringo 2012" and produced by Ringo, it was recorded in LA and mixed in England by Ringo and Bruce Sugar, and features 9 songs. Of the 9 tracks two are covers, "Think It Over," and "Rock Island Line" and two are new versions of his own songs, "Wings" and "Step Lightly." Joining Ringo in the studio for Ringo 2012 were musicians (in alphabetical order): Michael Bradford, Ann Marie Calhoun, Matt Cartsonis, Steve Dudas, Charlie Haden, Amy Keys, Kelly Moneymaker, Richard Page, Van Dyke parks, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Dave Stewart, Bruce Sugar, Benmont Tench, Joe Walsh , Don Was, Edgar Winter.

V.A. - Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan (2012) Designed as a celebration for Amnesty International's 50th Anniversary, Chimes of Freedom is the mother of all tribute albums: a four-disc salute to Bob Dylan that runs some 76 songs performed by singers from all corners of the globe. Apart from Lennon/McCartney - the former of which was the subject of producers Jeff Ayeroff and Julie Yannatta's previous 2007 collection Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur - no other songwriter of the rock & roll era could attract so many different artists from so many different genres as Dylan, something that is a testament to the resilience of his catalog. From the very start of his career, Dylan saw his songs covered by all manners of artists, ranging from colleagues and peers to longhair rock bands, easy listening outfits, and weirdos like William Shatner, so the absurd abundance of Chimes of Freedom in a way fits into the grand pattern of history: his songs were always up for grabs, they've survived terrible misguided covers, they've been performed with loving faith, they've been reinvented once and again. Given its monumental length, it should be of no great surprise that Chimes of Freedom has songs that fall into each category, although it is surprisingly bereft of awfulness. Not even Miley Cyrus' painful-in-theory straight-ahead cover of "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" is awful: she may not know who Verlaine and Rimbaud are, but she focuses on the melody and winds up selling the song in the process. Most of the artists here perform a similar trick, choosing love songs over protests, keeping things intimate instead of anthemic. Naturally, there are exceptions to the rule, but the scales on Chimes of Freedom are tipped toward pretty stripped-down sincerity - even Ke$ha abandons Auto-Tune for a nearly a cappella interpretation of "Don't Think Twice It's Alright" - an aesthetic that's easy to digest and helps make the artists that do something different pop out dramatically: Flogging Molly's Pogues-ian run through "The Times They Are A-Changing," Bryan Ferry's eerie reading of "Bob Dylan's Dream," Elvis Costello adding spikes to "License to Kill," Sinéad O'Connor tearing up "Property of Jesus," and Queens of the Stone Age tapping into Bob's rowdy side with a tremendous "Outlaw Blues." After a parade of faithful salutes ranging from Billy Bragg's impassioned "Lay Down Your Weary Tune" to Lenny Kravitz's absurd re-creation of "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35," it's great to hear actual re-interpretations of Dylan's songs - after all, even Bob himself doesn't always sing the same song the same way twice - cduniverse.com DISC 1: 01. TAYLOR BARTON - Thoroughbred (1997)
Chances are you have heard, met, or worked with Taylor Barton: a smart, multi-talented, singer-songwriter, actress, writer, playwright, poet, dancer, and film producer. She has spent over three decades traversing the arts and culminated into a 21st century Renaissance woman. Born in Baltimore, Maryland she started her musical training with piano lessons at age six. She enrolled in the Peabody Institute at age thirteen where she studied dance until her high school graduation. Music and lyrics were always her passion and while frequenting the local bars in Fells Point, she was inspired by her hometown heroes, Tom Waits, Lowell George, and John Waters.
Former 'Generic Blondes' lead singer Taylor Barton steps out on her own with 'Thoroughbred'. Her new setting leaves plenty of room for Barton's unaffected vocal, style, her sharp compassionate lyrics, and her ability to slip into rockers, mid-tempos, and ballads.

NANCI GRIFFITH - From A Distance: The Very Best Of Nanci Griffith (2002)
Well, the title is misleading, as this collection showcases only her MCA era; a more accurate designation would be From a Distance: The Best Stuff Nanci Griffith Did After She Left Philo and Before She Went to Elektra, but maybe that's not catchy enough. What is compelling is the music itself. During the period of 1987 to 1991, Griffith wrote some of her best material. She also discovered Julie Gold's classic title song, but found herself floundering commercially in her transition from folkabilly queen to arch chanteuse. Griffith's Philo records are still the most memorable--loose and full of Texas ranginess and sawdust memories. But this compilation is surprisingly satisfying, as it ends just before she began to take herself too seriously. You can hear a tinkling banjo driving "Lone Star State of Mind" and a pedal steel guitar as hillbilly as the Grand Ole Opry on "Ford Econoline." Her little-girl voice modulates to fetching reediness when necessary and even dips into deep Texas in the spoken intros to several live performances. But what stands out is the overall quality of the writing, which turns stunning on the wistful "Gulf Coast Highway" and on "Trouble in the Fields." If the reason for Griffith's status as a cult artist has eluded you, this anthology should go a long way toward clearing up the mystery. - amazon.com

STEAMHAMMER Blues-rockers Steamhammer formed in 1968 in the British town of Worthing. The band was made up of several blues and folk band veterans who were interested in playing something new. The band was pulled onto the road almost directly after their inception by blues legend Freddie King, who needed a backing band for his European tour. By spring of the next year, they signed a contract with CBS Records and released an eponymous debut. They mixed their own material with several standards, but failed to find an audience in the over-saturated blues-rock scene. The band did become quite the live sensation, despite a lineup shift that saw original members Michael Rushton and Martin Quittenton leave the band. Their second album was another stab at the same formula, with slightly different results due to new saxophonist Steve Jollife's incredible technical skill. By the time 1970 rolled around, they recorded their "definitive" album, the critical favorite Mountains. This album gave them some minor mainstream exposure, and revealed a band who was ready to adopt the rock side of their sound much more than before. They toured afterward, but lost most of the band members throughout the journey. By the time it was over, they only had original guitarist Martin Pugh and drummer Mick Bradley in the fold. They released one more album, 1972's Speech, to poor reviews and an indifferent public. The band broke up before they could even promote the album, and Bradley died the same year of leukemia. The band never attempted to reunite, but many of the members would go on to work with each other in projects like Armageddon. - answers.com
1969 - Steamhammer (Reflection) Steamhammer’s debut album based out of Worthing, England, was formative to the band’s success. The album featured two numbers that have remained the group’s trademarks throughout all musical and personnel changes: “Junior’s Wailing,” a blistering 12-bar blues number, with a basic riff recognizable from Brighton to Berlin, and the upbeat, “When Your Friends Have Gone”.01. PAUL McCARTNEY - Kisses On The Bottom (2012) Kisses On The Bottom is a collection of standards Paul grew up listening to in his childhood as well as the two new McCartney compositions "My Valentine" and "Only Our Hearts." With the help of Grammy Award-winning producer Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall and her band--as well as guest appearances from Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, McCartney's new album is a deeply personal journey through classic American compositions that, in some cases, a young Paul first heard his father perform on piano at home. The full track listing reveals that Paul has been both reverent and adventurous in his song choices. The phrase `Kisses On The Bottom,' comes from the album's opener `I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter'. Originally made a big hit by Fats Waller in 1935, the song opens with the lines "I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter and make believe it came from you. I'm gonna write words oh so sweet. They're gonna knock me off of my feet. A lot of kisses on the bottom, I'll be glad I got `em." As authentic and daring a musical statement as he could make, this is the album Paul has been thinking about making for more than 20 years - and probably the last thing his fans are expecting. "In the end it was 'Look, if I don't do it now, I'll never do it'," he says. In short, Paul believes it is about time "the songs me and John based quite a few of our things on" received the recognition they deserve. Moreover, the record also features a couple of new original McCartney compositions in the spirit of those classics. - amazon.com TRACKS: 01. I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter 02. LAUREN ELLIS Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Lauren Ellis has a rich background as a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter, especially known for her soulful expressions on slide guitar. Moving to Los Angeles, she found road work as guitarist with Rita Coolidge and Nell Carter, backed up legendary R&B duo Don and Dewey, and toured extensively stateside and overseas. In Los Angeles she wrote and recorded her first independent release: the critically acclaimed Push the River. Lauren was the winner of the 1999 Los Angeles Music Award in the category of Outstanding Guitarist, and was the only woman asked to audition for the post-Garcia version of the Grateful Dead: "The Other Ones". She has opened shows for Bonnie Raitt, Patti Griffin, Etta James and many others, and recent festival appearances include opening slots with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jimmy Thackery, John Mayall, Marty Stuart, and The Kentucky Headhunters. After relocating to Nashville, Tennessee, she began work on her second record, Feels Like Family. featuring stellar players like Tony Joe White, Viktor Krauss, Dean Parks and Kenny Malone, the CD has been received with rave reviews.
Listen for the songs on Feels like Family during MTV's reality shows The Real World, Road Rules, and Extreme Challenge. Lauren's searing slide guitar can also be heard on the theme for CMT's pop-meets-country series Crossroads, where she also shares composing credits. Lauren splits her time between Nashville and the Northeastern Florida coast, and she and the band are preparing to record her third independent release. When she isn't writing, recording, or performing, Lauren's other passion is the restoration and repair of guitars and other stringed instruments. On her first self-produced CD Push The River, Lauren showcases her skills on acoustic and electric guitars, Dobro, lap steel, and even electric sitar, but perhaps most impressive are the songs... heartfelt, memorable, and hook-laden, with strong lyrics and a vocal style that is honest, hopeful, and defiantly real. She is accompanied on the album by friends Roy Bittan on keyboards (Bruce Springsteen's "E" Street Band, and producer for Lucinda Williams), session guitar wizard Dean Parks (Lyle Lovett, Steely Dan, co-writer of Push the River's "Real Love"), Neil Stubenhaus on bass (Quincy Jones, Eric Clapton), and Herman Matthews on drums (Tower of Power, Meredith Brooks). - .laurenellis.com

She studied dancing and took up the classical violin in a musical family; her father played jazz piano, and her stepfather had a jazz band. As a pre-adolescent, she moved to town and became immersed in the popular music of the 1970s, listening to punk rock in her teens. Living in Sydney, she began studying acting, soon moving into video and film work, and she spent six years as an animator. Then she moved out of the city and began performing country music. She returned to Sydney, but continued to perform, working in an a cappella group led by Tony Backhouse. Then she formed her own vocal group, the Cowbelles, and later performed in such bands as the Harmony Grits and Audrey & the Rhythm Wranglers. Looking for a producer to work with her as a solo singer/songwriter, she met Bill Chambers of the Dead Ringer Band (the father of Kasey Chambers), and with him made a four-song EP released in 1997. This was followed by Looking Back to See, an album of traditional country duets, released on their own label, Reckless Records, in 1998 and credited to Bill & Audrey. Next, Mezera wrote and recorded a solo album, The Fallen, in 2000. When it found American distribution, she toured the U.S. in 2001. She released her second solo album, Losing Faith, in 2003. The same year, she married and relocated to America, settling in the town of Bolinas in northern California. In 2004, she released a live album, Texas. This was the first album on which she employed her married name of Audrey Auld Mezera. In December 2005, she played a concert with guitarist Nina Gerber that was recorded for a double-CD live album, In the House, released in May 2006. Her third solo studio album, Lost Men and Angry Girls, was released in February 2007.

THE WHO - Thirty Years Of Maximum R&B (1994) This exemplary four-disc box takes the high road, attempting nothing less than an honest reconstruction of the Who's stormy, adventurous, uneven pilgrimage. While offering an evenhanded cross-section of single hits and classic album tracks, 30 Years garnishes the expected high points with B-sides, alternate and live versions of familiar tracks, and the quartet's earliest singles as the High Numbers. Reinforcing the package's documentary agenda are interview and stage-patter sound bites. What emerges is a fascinating chronicle of how the Shepherd's Bush mods journeyed from the giddy, explosive concision of their January 1965 debut single, "I Can't Explain," to the discursive, knotty sweep of creative architect Pete Townshend's "rock operas," Tommy, Quadrophenia, and the uncompleted, unreleased Lifehouse. The Who's swift evolution into rock visionaries is traced chronologically, meaning the band's original immersion in "maximum R&B," which forged their earliest club dates, doesn't surface on record until midway through the sequence, on key tracks from their thundering Live at Leeds album. Fans may quibble over the relative weight given specific albums, but the shape of the Who's career and their passionate identification with their audience are rendered faithfully. So, too, is Townshend's skill at mingling issues of faith and identity with generational manifestoes and sly broadsides. And there's ample evidence of the quartet's outsize musical power; the sheer volume and violence that earned them notoriety early on is matched by a lyricism that deepens by mid career. Given the candor of the presentation, it's not surprising that 30 Years reaches its zenith midway through the set or that the last song (a reunion of the surviving trio covering Elton John) can't help seeming anticlimactic. - amazon.com 01. JOHN MAYALL - Live In London (2011) John Mayall, “The Godfather of the Blues,” continues to draw audiences to his live shows, including this one, which was recorded at the Leicester Square Theatre in London on November 1, 2010. Anybody who’s a fan will recognize most of the tunes contained in this 2-CD set or on DVD. The one tune that most people consider his signature tune is “Room To Move,” and in this rendition Mayall manages to breathe new life into it. As the liner notes say, it’s a “Room to Move” to remember. You’ll hear new and different scat lyrics in it, plus it’s got a slightly slowed-down tempo, which gives it a totally different (yet still a jumping, mesmerizing) spin. When you consider that Mayall will soon turn 78, it’s all the more amazing what he accomplishes here. Another of Mayall's signature songs in this set is “California,” an anthem to his adopted home. You’ll also recognize “Chicago Line,” “Parchman Farm” and “Early In The Morning.” Mayall’s backing band for this performance includes Rocky Athas on guitar, Greg Rzab on bass, and Jay Davenport on drums. Over the years, Mayall has introduced an amazing line-up of musicians, mostly guitarists. Marc Almond, Eric Clapton, Aynsley Dunbar, Mick Fleetwood, Hughie Flint, Andy Fraser, Peter Green, Don "Sugarcane" Harris, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Jon Hiseman, Harvey Mandel, Jon Mark, John McVie, Coco Montoya, Larry Taylor, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout and Buddy Whittington all got their first taste of fame working with Mayall, and they’ve all gone on to become household names on both sides of the Pond. - blogcritics.org 01. THE SHADOWS - Memories: 36 Guitar Mods (2005) If the first Shadows hits collection was an unimpeachable masterpiece, their second is, if you'll pardon the pun, a mere shadow of its brilliance. Not that there is anything whatsoever amiss with the contents. "Foot Tapper," "Atlantis," "Shindig," and so on were all remarkable hits -- remarkable, that is, not only for their instrumental prowess, but also because they proved the Shadows were still a vibrant concern, long after rock and pop had moved into the middle-age crisis of the mid-1960s. "The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt," "Genie With the Light Brown Lamp," and the admirably raucous "Rhythms and Greens" are all here for hit completists; so is "Mary Anne," the group's first vocal hit and proof that there was life beyond the trademark tang. Indeed, a dozen hits take the band's story up through the release of the mawkish masterpiece "Don't Make My Baby Blue," while two quaintly oddball cuts from the Rhythms and Greens EP complete the set. Even at the band's best, however, little here has more than a passing resonance in comparison with the megaliths of the past. In their prime, a new Shadows single hit you with all the physical and emotional impact of the first date of your dreams. By 1965, they were more like old friends -- you'd pass on the street, swear you'd get together again sometime, then dismiss them from your mind. There's some great music here. But once you've got the first hits collection, do you really need anything more? The Shadows are easily the most popular and influential British instrumental group of all time. Their career started in the late '50s as Cliff Richard's backing band and they consistently hit the singles charts well into the 80's. Lead guitarist Hank Marvin is cited by many modern pickers as a major influence. Throughout the latter part of their career, they released many instrumental covers and interpretations of classic themes. This 2 disc set brings together many of those recordings Including the two top 10 hits 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' & 'Theme From The Deer Hunter (Cavatina)' & the top 50 hit 'The Third Man'. - cduniverse.com DISC 1: 01.
