In October 2008 the American Numismatic Society opened its new headquarters at 75 Varick Street in lower Manhattan. Founded in 1858, the ANS contains the most comprehensive collection of coins, medals and paper currency in the United States, as well as the world's largest numismatic library. The Societys new educational and research facilities are available to international scholars, students and members of the general public who are interested in studying coins, medals and other treasures in the Society's superb collection.
ANS staff and consultants will provide an overview of the Societys collections and discuss the challenges involved in its recent relocation. Speakers will include:
Robert Wilson Hoge, ANS Curator of North American Coins and Currency B.A., University of Colorado at Boulder, Anthropology/History; Post-graduate study at the University of Chicago and University of Colorado, in Anthropology, History, Geography, and Education: teaching certification in Social Sciences.
From 1981 to 2001, Hoge was Curator of the American Numismatic Associationin charge of the ANAs Money Museum, in Colorado Springs. He served also as manager of the ANAs Authentication Bureau and columnist and contributing editor for The Numismatist. For 19 years he taught the most highly rated course in the ANAs Summer Seminar, and prepared dozens of exhibits. He served previously as Director of the Sanford Museum and Planetarium, from 1976 to 1981, when he was named in Outstanding Young Men of America; he also taught Cultural Anthropology at Buena Vista College, in Iowa. Hoges numismatic interests range widely through ancient, medieval, oriental and early modern issues. He is the author of several hundred articles in numismatics and other areas. Hoge has participated in archaeological excavations, and in 1985 was invited to observe the treasure salvage of the 1622 Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha. He was selected as a United States representative in the International Partnerships among Museums Program of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), working with the National Museum of Pakistan (1990). He has been a member of numerous professional numismatic and museological organizations and has served as a speaker upon many occasions, also appearing on the PBS television programs, The News Hour with Jim Lehrer and The History Detectives
Elizabeth Hahn, ANS Librarian M.A., Maritime Archaeology and History, University of Bristol, U.K.; M.A., Classical Art and Archaeology, University of Virginia; M.S.L.I.S., Rare Books and Archives, Long Island University.
Elizabeth Hahn has professional training as an archaeologist, a numismatist, and a librarian. She has worked on various excavations both on land and underwater in Sicily, Israel, and North America. Her academic interests include the coinage and literature of Greek Sicily and southern Italy, maritime trade, zoological iconography; Greek and Roman ceramics; coastal landscapes; and the history of art and archaeology. She is a certified Advanced Open Water PADI Scuba diver and outside of academia, has received a number of awards in rowing. She is an avid cyclist and also has training as a classical violinist.
Joseph M. Ciccone, Archival Consultant The founder and principal member of Ciccone Archival Consulting, LLC (CAC), Ciccone has assisted the ANS with its archives since 2004. Prior to forming CAC, Joe worked as the Corporate Archivist for Merck from 1998 through 2003. Joe's career as an archivist began after a legal career in both the public and private sectors. He earned his J.D. from Washington & Lee University School of Law and his B.A. in history and political science from Southern Methodist University. Joe is also a graduate of Rutgers University's School of Communication, Information and Library Studies, where he received his Master of Library Service.
In addition to his work with CAC, Joe also has been very involved in the broader archival community. For instance, Joe has conducted workshops for the Mid-Atlantic Region Archives Conference (MARAC) on both copyright and oral history. Joe also served on the board of the New York Archivists Roundtable (NYART) from 2002 through 2006, during which time he edited the organizations periodical, the Metropolitan Archivist. A certified archivist, Joe also edited the newsletter of the Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA), the ACA News, from 2005-06. More recently, in 2008 Joe was elected to the Board of the New York Preservation Archives Project (NYPAP). Besides his work with NYART, MARAC, ACA, and NYPAP, Joe is a member of the American Historical Association, Society of American Archivists, Oral History Association, and Delaware Valley Archivists Group.
