The Spider's Web: A Look at Anderson Silva's Record Win Streak
- July 28, 2012 03:00 pm
If there is one thing we know about combat sports athletes, it is that time tends to catch up with them quickly. The wear and tear on muscles and joints, the nagging injuries, the grueling training camps, they all take their toll on the body and combine to rob fighters of their explosiveness, their speed and sometimes, their desire. And in a game of milliseconds, that is sometimes enough to make all the difference between victory and defeat. In 2011, mixed martial arts writer David Williams did an extensive study aimed at examining fighters' careers and their performance drop-offs. And what he found after examing the career spans of over 300 of them was that the steepest drop in performance comes after nine years of professional action. His theory -- dubbed "The 9-Year Rule" -- noted major fighters including Chuck Liddell, Fedor Emelianenko and Takanori Gomi as examples, but reported that across the board, the 9-Year Rule seems to apply with a handful of exceptions. One of those is Anderson Silva. His most recent win over Chael Sonnen was just days after the 15th anniversary of his MMA debut. Now 37 years old, he is one of MMA's elder statesmen, and he is also an anomaly. In a young man's game, Silva is the second-oldest fighter ranked among the top 10 in any division (only 41-year-old Dan Henderson is older). And each time he fights, his unmatched record of success continues to grow.

Roy Nelson: Lawal, Angle and Conte Not Allowed to Appear on TUF 16
- July 29, 2012 11:44 am
Esther Lin, MMA FightingWith The Ultimate Fighter 16 set to begin filming, Roy Nelson is not, shall we say, making things easy on the UFC.
"Big Country," who will coach opposite heavyweight Shane Carwin on the show, claims the UFC has denied him from using several combat sports personalities as assistant coaches on the upcoming season of the show.
Former Strikeforce fighter turned Bellator and TNA Wrestling star Muhammed Lawal, pro wrestling legend Kurt Angle and Victor Conte, the founder of BALCO Laboratories, are "non-UFC allowed," according to Nelson. Nelson's manager Mike Kogan confirmed with MMAFighting.com that the UFC will not allow the trio to appear on the show.- 1 Comment

Esther Lin, MMA FightingIf Steven Seagal watches TV on Aug. 4, he just might find out who Nam Phan is.
On a recent edition of The MMA Hour, Seagal heard about critical remarks from Phan, who will fight Cole Miller on the Fuel TV portion of the UFC on FOX card at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
"Never heard of him," Seagal told MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani. "Nam Fran? Is he an American guy? I don't know who this guy is and I don't really care."

Invicta FC 2 Results: Sara McMann Outpoints Shayna Baszler in Main Event
- Ben Fowlkes
- July 29, 2012 12:45 am
Invicta FCSara McMann kept her perfect record intact after an intense three-round battle with Shayna Baszler at Invicta FC 2, but it didn’t come easy. The judges awarded the former Olympic silver medalist wrestler a unanimous decision victory (29-28, 30-27, 29-28), but Baszler made her earn it after staggering McMann with a hook in the final seconds and stinging her with sharp counter-punching throughout the fight."That was by far the toughest and most skilled fighter I have ever fought," McMann said after the judges handed her the win. For anyone who saw Baszler nearly drop her in the waning moments of the bout, it wasn’t hard to believe.

Phil Davis Learns From Loss to Rashad Evans, Remains Confident He'll Be Champion
- July 28, 2012 09:00 am
CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- With time winding down before the Aug. 4 UFC on FOX 4 card, Phil Davis is plotting to show the fans something they've never seen from him.
The light heavyweight standout is one of three fighters at Chula Vista's Alliance MMA gym who will compete at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, along with heavyweight Phil DeFries and main eventer Brandon Vera.
All three want to go out and earn the UFC's evening bonus money, so with Davis fighting UFC newcomer Wagner Prado on the middle of the card, after DeFries but before Vera, he figures he'll have to use some strategy to earn some extra dough.

Cesar Gracie: Nick Diaz Will Return, Wants Anderson Silva in Comeback Fight
- Mike Chiappetta
- July 27, 2012 07:42 pm
Esther Lin, MMA FightingOn Friday night, Cesar Gracie confirmed what most of us had always suspected: that Nick Diaz's "retirement" wouldn't stick. In a statement posted on GracieFighter.com, Gracie, who trains and manages Diaz, acknowledged that the 28-year-old former Strikeforce champ would return to the UFC octagon whenever he regains a fighter's license. That's not so surprising. But what he said later on? Well, that was the interesting part.
Denied a chance to fight welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, Diaz plans to ask for a match against UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
