The spread of affordable college education made upward mobility a truly plausible American goal. No more. On this Thanksgiving we have been cheated of the bounty of that harvest.

As a Christian who does his best to take reason as seriously as I take faith, I find impossible to understand America as a "Christian nation" -- and I believe that there are vibrant possibilities in the fact that it is not.
Marian Wright Edelman, 11/24/11
President, Children's Defense Fund
For some families Thanksgiving may be the only meal of the year where they pause before eating to truly give thanks for the food in front of them. But for millions of our neighbors, they cannot always count on the next meal.

A couple of new books dig into the science of willpower, and their findings reveal that the current reality of women's lives leaves us particularly challenged.
Senior Associate for Communication and Inclusion, All Saints Episcopal Church, Pasadena, Calif.
Take that, Western Civilization. How are you doing, Institution of Marriage? Are your foundations shaking? Is the undermining almost complete? Or does our Thanksgiving agenda just look a whole lot like yours? Of course it does.
Esther Wojcicki, 11/24/11
Journalism/English teacher
We are a country who says the glass is half empty instead of half full. We need to change our perspective, at least on Thanksgiving. We all have reasons to be thankful.
Evelyn Leopold, 11/24/11

Will Turkey and others ensure that Syrian opposition forces have enough military support to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad? Suddenly, it's a fast moving saga.
Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, 11/24/11
Co-founder and Executive Director of MomsRising.org
While many celebrate by eating together on Thanksgiving, far too many children in our nation live in families who are struggling to put food on the table because of poverty. And for them, this Thanksgiving will be a tough one.

There is much to be thankful for this year. I'm thankful that the UC Davis police are not in charge of security at our offices. I'm thankful that Herman Cain doesn't oversee HR here, that the supercommittee isn't responsible for determining our editorial budget, and that Mayor Bloomberg hasn't paid a visit to our nap rooms (he might find them a "health and fire safety hazard"). I'm thankful my daughters are home from college for the holidays. I'm thankful my move to New York has brought me a great new neighborhood filled with surprises around every corner. And I'm very thankful for our great HuffPost team -- which rose to the challenge of adding 24 new sections since March -- and for our passionate, engaged community. How about you? What are you thankful for? Let us know in the comments section.

If we resolve to Occupy Ourselves -- to acknowledge all of ourselves -- especially our darkest aspects -- only then can we stop the fear that is running ourselves and our society.
, 11/24/11
I think we have an indestructible hope that as bad as things get, if we work hard enough and talk long enough, we'll find our way out of the forest. It's who we are. And I'm thankful for that.
Rita Wilson, 11/23/11
Editor at Large, Huff/Post50; Actor and Producer
As a kid I was thankful for my Barbie and her "house". As a teenager I was thankful for a career in acting that kept me busy. Now, as a Post50 woman, I am thankful for all the ups and downs along the way, all the seeds that have been sown that have led me to this new season of gratitude.
Michael Roth, 11/24/11
President, Wesleyan University

This year, don't blame the turkey if the football game renders you unconscious. Blame the booze and all those delicious carbs.
Calvin O. Butts, III, Emanuel Cleaver II and Stuart Muszynski, 11/24/11
At this time of national Thanksgiving, may we be authentic in thanking our country based on the way we act toward each other. Our faith and values have been and can again become our grounding elements.

Here's a handy roundup of retorts to a few egregious arguments you're likely to hear from that brother-in-law with a PhD in Fox News. Master these, and you'll probably end up having thirds of Aunt Debbie's pecan pie.

I've learned that it's especially important for those who are always trying to change the world to remember what they are thankful for in their world as it is!
Larry Strauss, 11/24/11
Veteran high school English teacher, basketball coach, novelist
Sometimes my students ask me why I became a teacher. No simple answer. It was a combination of things, probably starting when, though I am three-and-a-half years younger than my brother, I became the older brother.
Laurie David, 11/23/11
Producer/Author/NRDC Trustee
Corporations are no longer allowed to advertise cigarettes on TV due to the potential impact it could have on our kids. When it comes to hard liquor, the government didn't ban it, the companies did it voluntarily. So, isn't it sugary sodas' turn?

Social Q's columnist, New York Times Sunday Styles section
As we land on Thanksgiving, that roller derby of holidays, on which so many extended families and misfit friends gather for marathon dining (and flare-ups of fury), what better hostess gift than to share my Top Tips for Avoiding Thanksgiving Meltdowns -- each learned the hard way.
Patricia Aranka Smith, 11/23/11
Author, Artist, and Other Things
I grew up in an era where there were only a handful of logical explanations for getting up in the middle of the night. We did not wake up to go shopping. Anywhere. For anything. Ever.

While we celebrate the holiday that symbolizes gratitude for life in a free land, families have loved ones halfway around the world who have stood up to protect those freedoms. You have to respect that, no matter what your politics or individual views are.

This is for those of us who aren't spirited away to some remote 'burb in the U.S. to split turkey wishbones with cousins. This is for that magical time of year when us few find ourselves feeling like survivors of some armageddon on Thanksgiving day.
Senior Vice President for Save the Children's U.S. Programs
This is my first Thanksgiving without my dad. Not a day goes by that I don't miss him greatly, but not a day goes by that I don't thank God for blessing me with such a role model.
Kerstin Shamberg, 11/23/11
Social Media Editor at the Huffington Post
Thanksgiving may be the loveliest of our national holidays, but it has a dark side that haunts me every year: turkeys, 40 million of them, are slaughtered for this holiday.
Marcus Samuelsson, 11/16/11
Chef; Author
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite American traditions. I quickly picked it up when I moved to the U.S. from Sweden.
This year, let us give thanks to all of those moments we tried to remember what exactly we're giving thanks for.
Terra Trevor, 11/23/11
Author, Pushing up the Sky: A Mother's Story
After the "Thanksgiving" holiday was coined and continues to be celebrated based on a story that does not include factual Native American history, "Thanksgiving" has become a time of mourning for many Native People.

Knowing what's important to one another, and making an honest effort to deliver, will go a long way towards mitigating the potential downside of any unrealistic expectations surrounding Thanksgiving.

Editor, Eat the Press
GOP 2012 contender Mitt Romney's recent ad has gotten a ton of attention from the press because it contains a brief clip of President Barack Obama saying these words, consecutively, in order: "If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose." BOOM! What a clip, right? Why did Barack Obama say such a thing in public? Oh, that's right, he said those words consecutively and in order because back in 2008, an aide to John McCain said those words consecutively and in order, and Obama quoted that aide to use the words against McCain. As everyone points out, Romney's use of the words out of context is misleading. But it seems that what very few people are willing to say, as Too Much Joy once sang, is: "That's a lie. You're a liar."

For a few years, we had a great time playing mother and daughter on Friends. But far from a Hollywood TV studio, we forged a bond that was even more lasting for us -- by joining together to help families who are fighting for the lives of their children.

The First Amendment is being stood on its head. Money speaks, and an unlimited amount of it can now be spent bribing and cajoling politicians. Yet peaceful assembly is viewed as a public nuisance and removed by force.

Maybe the only real solution to all of this is for the public to take the 2012 elections very, very seriously, and send a more definable mandate to the politicians on the decisions they are entrusted to make.

The Occupy movement has been a test -- a national MRI -- that has allowed us to check-in on the health of our democracy by allowing us to see what's going on underneath the surface of America's power structures. And the results are dire.

Since climate change is the first truly global problem, those people have to figure out how to raise a common message, one that crosses the boundaries of language. The best method -- proven in countless social movements -- may be music.

These are not conflicts between rivals of equal proportion, as "clash" connotes. These are incidents of police violence and media should start calling it for what it is. With so much amateur video, the media has little choice but to set aside convention and report what's happening.

Given what scientists now know about the link between climate change and heat waves, floods, droughts and heavy downpours, the time for a national climate service is now. But unfortunately Congress is moving in the opposite direction.

It's hard to see the forest for the trees. And it's hard to see a movement when it is happening. That's where we are with Occupy Wall Street. So it's time to look back in time and read about successful campaigns by individuals that changed the course of human history.

This weekend, while listening to an NPR story about police using tear gas and rubber bullets to break up a demonstration, I was actually surprised when it turned out the newscaster was talking about Tahrir Square -- I had assumed it was about another brutal response to a peaceful protest here at home. All across the country -- most recently on the campus of UC Davis -- a war is being waged. But this isn't a battle over parks and tents and sleeping bags. This is a battle about our leaders' credibility. Indeed, the Occupy movement has been a test -- a national MRI -- that has allowed us to check-in on the health of our democracy by allowing us to see what's going on underneath the surface of America's power structures. And the results are dire. What the movement, and the response to it, has shown is a government almost completely disconnected from those it purports to represent.

Last week, President Obama forcefully declared that the United States would not withdraw from the Asia-Pacific, telling the Australian Parliament that he was dispatching 2,500 Marines as well as ships and aircraft to serve at a base in the Australian port of Darwin. The message, in case anybody missed it, was unmistakably directed at China. But while Obama was making symbolic military gestures, his administration was doing nothing serious to contest China's growing threat to America's economic base. That threat is spelled out in an official government document that should be mandatory reading for all of us: the annual report of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, released last Thursday.

Congress failed basic nutrition when it voted to dismiss new guidelines that would have upped the amount of fresh veggies and fruit in school lunches and instead declared that frozen pizza qualified as a vegetable (which, I'm sure, had nothing to do with the $5.6 million the food industry has spent lobbying against the healthier regulations). And New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg didn't pass the sniff test when he claimed that he ordered the surprise NYPD raid on Occupy Wall Street's Zuccotti Park encampment because it had become a "fire safety hazard." The Occupy movement is in large part a response to the diminished credibility of governments everywhere. And the way governments are dealing with the movement only further diminishes their credibility. An epic fail.
2tNd9OUJXHYsf%2BXVQjfGaIQ%3D%3DBy striking a chord with many in America and across the world, it is a movement that cannot, and should not be dismissed. It will resonate even more as western economies continue to struggle with sluggish growth and high unemployment. Yet it is too early to declare victory.
Alec Baldwin, 11/16/11
Actor
Occupy Wall Street people understand that not only are more difficult times possibly around the corner, they know that the current government will likely do as it has historically done, which is to protect the rich and powerful at the expense of the long term interests of the middle class.

For a lot of us, the crisis in our nation's schools feels overwhelming and the problems too big for any one person to make a difference. But the other night it didn't feel that way. Here's why.
Jessica Alba, 11/15/11

Every kid has the right to be safe in her home. Every mom has the right to know that the products she buys for her child are free of toxic chemicals. We have hope and faith in our political system to fix this problem, and we are counting on our U.S. Senators to get it done.

Regardless of where you fall on the scale of feminist ideology -- great progress to stubborn inequality -- in the arena of women and work, big shifts are afoot. The direction is clear. The destination is not. But by all indications, work and families have some adjustments ahead.

In a time of fiercely mean politics, when Right and Left compete to demonize each other ever more ferociously, Americans are wearying of the noise and the rancor. So what to do? Here, in a modest photo gallery, is my suggestion.

As a lifelong LGBT ally and friend, I feel it is my duty to not only apologize for my wrong but to also correct it. The word "tr*nny" is a derogatory and hurtful word. I was completely ignorant to this. This is a word I will no longer use or allow.

In prior periods of economic downturn, America and American politics have turned inward. In the 21st century economy and with the 21st century threats, that is not an option. American politics needs to drop the pretense that it is.

Aristotle got it right when he said, "All who have meditated on the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth." Once upon a time America professed to believe in a strong public education system. And we still talk about public education as the great equalizer and pathway out of poverty, but continue to fall far short in assuring millions of poor children upward mobility. And as if children and families were not suffering enough during this economic downturn, many states are now choosing to shift more costs away from government onto children and families who have fewer means to bear them. This is a shameful trend.

What if the super committee ends in stalemate? Across-the-board, automatic cuts are set to kick in. That so-called sequestration wouldn't start, however, until 2013. That would make 2012 one of the most important election years in modern American history.
Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy, University of California at Berkeley; Author, 'Aftershock'
The biggest question right now on Planet Washington is whether the congressional supercommittee will reach an agreement. That's the wrong question.
Jared Bernstein, 11/18/11
Senior Fellow, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities
I give the Republicans on the super committee credit for offering a few hundred billion in tax cuts through ending some tax expenditures. That breaks the Norquist pledge and a bad day for Grover is a good day for America.
Robin Quivers, 11/18/11

One of the questions I hear over and over when child sexual abuse comes up is, "Why didn't they tell?" But when I was trying to figure out how to be safe again after my own experience, telling was one of the first options removed from the table. I didn't have anyone to tell.

What's a beleaguered Bank of America to do? Well, it could make a company-wide commitment to offering better customer service and undertake a systemic reform of its business practices. Or, it could hire Malcolm Gladwell as a shill and put him in front of small-business owners!
Julius Genachowski, 11/18/11
Barely half of small businesses have a cybersecurity strategy or plan in place and nearly 80 percent say they lack a written Internet security policy. It's vital that small businesses take the necessary steps to increase their protection against cyber threats.

The GOP primary process has been painful and embarrassing, especially for Republicans. While President Barack Obama faces a tough reelection campaign, the Republican Party seems to be doing all it can to help him win a second term. Or, as Governor Perry would say, "Oops."
Art Brodsky, 11/18/11

It was truly embarrassing to watch the elected representatives prostrate themselves to the entertainment business which is dwarfed, in economic terms, by companies that provide goods and services over the Internet.

Illegal immigration is not just about undocumented immigrants like me who contribute to society and pay taxes. It's also about countless American citizens -- from principals to pastors, coaches to classmates, all members of the 21st Century Underground Railroad.

Joe Paterno's legacy should be that of a giant, who may have made one serious mistake of judgment, which seems clearer in retrospect than it probably was at the time it was made. There are no perfect heroes in real life.

During last week's debate, four of the GOP candidates promoted "enhanced interrogation tactics," including waterboarding, as necessary for national security. Plain and simple, waterboarding is torture. As such, it is illegal under U.S. and international law.

We motor into the Motor City with a clear editorial mission: to cover both sides of the city's split-screen -- for Detroit, beyond the oversimplified myth of its past, and beyond the unimaginative visions of its future, is a city of incredible contrasts. On one side is a city for which the American dream seems despairingly out of reach. On the other side is a city experiencing a steady influx of young, college-educated residents. READ MORE

Talking about the buyer's remorse, a growing bipartisan collection of members of Congress is backing away from the Norquist "no-tax" pledge.
Mario Batali, 11/17/11
Chef, restaurateur, author and TV host
Cooking family dinner should start long before bags full of groceries are on the counter. Conversation and democracy are two essential tenets to dining as a family.
Vincent M Keenan, 11/17/11
Director, Publius.org
We've been told we're on the edge so many times that it feels like Detroit is as much on the edge of existence as on the straits of the Detroit River. Yet, if there is one common thread that ties Detroiters together it is resolve.
, 11/17/11
With Paterno's breach of integrity, yet another myth of great American male leadership has cracked. Another cultural elder was revealed as nothing more than a ruthless businessman seeking to protect his institution at all costs.
Carol Hartsell, 11/17/11
Comedy Editor, The Huffington Post
That loud banging noise you hear every time someone asks "which gender is funnier" is the collective sound of actual, real-life funny women slamming their heads against whatever hard object they can find.
Gretchen Rubin, 11/17/11

I have a lot of trouble remembering people's names. So I've developed some strategies for coping with the fact that I'm not able to pull up a person's name right away.
Matthew Dowd, 11/17/11

Here's a serious concern for this election cycle: the media's systematic exclusion from the debates of candidates who may actually have become competitive in this very fluid environment if given a nationally televised forum to reach to voters.
David Wild, 11/18/11
TV Writer; Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone; Co-Author, 'Diary of a Player"'
I try to take absolutely no pleasure in celebrity breakups -- our national bloodsport in recent years. That said, this one just makes me sad -- two nice people who seemed so very happy, and then not. So here's my mostly downbeat playlist for Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher.
Richard (RJ) Eskow, 11/17/11
Consultant, writer and Senior Fellow, Campaign for America's Future
News reports described the "hundreds of police and private security guards" who had re-taken Zuccotti Park. Those private guards were used against public citizens who had been exercising their civil liberties in a public area. That's un-American.
Lawrence Korb, 11/17/11
Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress
Close examination of Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta's letter to Senators John McCain and Lindsay Graham demonstrates that the effects of sequestration on the Department of Defense would not be as great as the Secretary claims.

For the past three years, Mayer Hawthorne has been the new look of pop music, dipping back to the old sounds of Motown and funk. For us, though, he is a testament to the continuing legacy of great music coming from Michigan.

Barbara Hannah Grufferman, 11/17/11

The Occupy Movement continues to protest economic inequality. But it's missing an opportunity to create a lasting legacy: to push for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, 11/17/11
Senior Religion Editor for the Huffington Post
As the 2012 campaign gears up, we are once again faced with the prospect of sinister religious rhetoric that paints opponents with hyper-charged and potentially lethal brushes.
Simone Landon, 11/17/11
Editor, HuffPost Detroit
There is so much Detroit (138.8 square miles) that the spokes of the city streets may as well stretch into infinity. But journalists still need to treat this place respectfully and offer real engagement, not voyeurism.
William Galston, 11/16/11
Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution
To an extent that we haven't seen since 1992, the 2012 election will focus on a single issue: economic growth and job creation. And because President Obama cannot win without focusing on the heartland, he's already in for an uphill reelection battle.
Marcus Samuelsson, 11/16/11
Chef; Author
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite American traditions. I quickly picked it up when I moved to the U.S. from Sweden.
MacGregor Thomson, 11/17/11

What makes a courageous president and Congress? What examples do we have in history, what examples do we have in present day?
Jim Wallis, 11/17/11
Christian leader for social change
It's time to invite the Occupy Movement to church! And Thanksgiving is the perfect occasion. Have some of the young protesters -- the "99ers" as they're becoming known -- from this rapidly growing movement over for a big holiday dinner!
Jesse Kornbluth, 11/17/11
Editor of HeadButler.com
If you are a big time Amazon customer, this is a very sharp device. Because that's what, at bottom, the Amazon Kindle is: an Amazon consumption enabler.
Dr. Josef Olmert, 11/17/11
Adjunct Professor, American University’s School of International Service
Political scientists and linguists can debate the exact meaning of the term civil war and when it is in place, but in Syria both regime and opposition know the die is cast.
Rep. Maxine Waters, 11/17/11
Congresswoman from California's 35th District
The banks hope that we'll see all the zeros and think that they've actually given us something. But California Attorney General Kamala Harris is not buying it. Instead of pressuring Harris to go with the flow, the rest of the attorneys general should follow her lead.
