December Conference: A Mountain of Waste 70 Years High: Ending the Nuclear Age
“Won’t you please come to Chicago – no one else can take your place! We CAN change the world!…”
– Graham NashA Conference observing the 70th Anniversary of the 1st sustained chain reaction, and the birth of the Nuclear Age
On December 2, 1942, an experiment at the University of Chicago led by Enrico Fermi produced the world’s first human-made sustained chain reaction, and launched the Nuclear Age. The Nuclear Age has not been kind to everyone – beginning with the people of Japan. The Faustian bargain continues to this day – with the Japanese again becoming nuclear victims after Fukushima, and the world threatened by the continued presence of both nuclear weapons and nuclear power radiation releases and wastes.
Building on the observation of previous conferences first 40, then 30 years ago, this Conference notes that to this day, not a single ounce of radioactive waste has been permanently disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. And it bears witness to those fellow humans to whom the Nuclear Age has been less than kind.
This is a call to come to the very birthplace of the Nuclear Age – memorialized by Henry Moore’s sculpture to Nuclear Energy (photo above), on the very site where Fermi’s experiment occurred – to remember its victims, and seriously question whether that Age has the right to continue among civilized human beings.

Upcoming Nuclear Events
…that need your attention and participation!
September 8, 2012
1.) WON’T YOU PLEASE COME TO (WASHINGTON?) FOR SOME CHANGE? – A major national safe-energy/anti-nuclear gathering is scheduled to take place inWashington D.C. from Thursday, Sept. 20 to Saturday, Sept. 22. NEIS is sending representatives, and other groups and individuals are also making plans. Details can be found at: www.coalitionagainstnukes.
org/ You can participate by:
- Contacting the office of your Congressperson and Senators, and strongly urging them to attend or send a representative to the planned nuclear issues briefing scheduled for Thursday afternoon from 2-4 p.m., Cannon House Office Building – Room number 121.
- Making plans to attend.
This is a very important event, and making advance contact with your rep and Senator will help us emphasize the importance of these nuclear issues when we meet with these people in DC.
2.) NEXT KNOW-NUKES FILM SERIES: Atomic Mom, 80 min., 2011. Thursday, Sept. 27, 6:30 p.m., Multi-Kulti Center, 1000 N. Milwaukee Ave. (at Augusta), Chicago. Filmmaker M.T. Silva tells the story of her mother – a Navy lieutenant who worked as a researcher on the Manhattan Project, and who years later has to come to grips with her role in creating “the bomb,” and all its effects. The story takes an even more deeply emotional turn when Silva’s mother meets a hibakusha from Japan.
3.) SAVE THE DATES (AND ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES…)!: NEIS has been planning with Beyond Nuclear and others to put on a major national anti-nuclear conference in Chicago to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the Enrico Fermi chain-reaction. We’re planning this for Sat/Sun Dec. 1-2, location TBD, but most likely the University of Chicago campus. Pencil in the dates to attend. In addition we will need scores of volunteers to help with planning and running this event. We’ll be announcing an initial planning session shortly, so we hope you will want to be a part of making this historic event happen. Contact us by phone or e-mail if you’re interested in helping out. NEIS Release: Damning Fukushima Report Released
Japanese Diet releases scathing report re-writing the “official story” on Fukushima disaster causes
Download Release here.
July 5, 2012CHICAGO—The Japanese National Diet (parliament) Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission released a scathing report today which lays primary responsibility for the Fukushima disaster on the government, the regulators and the nuclear industry; and which seriously challenges the popular explanation for the three meltdowns and explosions at the reactor site in March, 2011.
The Report — The Official Report of The Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission — calls the Fukushima disaster: “…a profoundly man-made disaster – that could and should have been foreseen and prevented,” according to Kiyoshi Kurokawa, chair of the Commission. Damning Fukushima Report Released
FUKUSHIMA: “…a profoundly man-made disaster – that could and should have been foreseen and prevented,” says Kiyoshi Kurokawa, chair of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission.
A scathing report released today in Japan labels the 2011 Fukushima nuclear plant disaster as “man-made” in its root causes, laying out a pattern of “errors and willful negligence” as well as collusion that exists among the government, the regulatory bodies and the nuclear industry to ignore safety concerns. If this sounds a little too familiar, it should (Are you listening, NRC?) .
It further states that the earthquake — not just the tsunami — must be considered to have done some of the damage leading to the subsequent meltdowns and explosions at the reactors. This is a MAJOR change of narrative for the causes of the Fukushima disaster.
More information and commentary to follow. Download the report here.

TO RE-START NUCLEAR REACTORS
Protest events scheduled in other U.S. cities, Japan
CHICAGO—Safe-energy advocates protested outside of the Chicago Japanese Consulate against Japan’s plans to re-start two reactors at the Ohi nuclear power station, in Fukui Prefecture in Western Japan. The event was scheduled to coincide with massive rallies against the re-start taking place in Japan today. Other events are planned throughout the U.S. through Monday.
“We ask the Consul General Yoshifumi Okamura to convey to Prime Minister Noda our support for a nuclear free Japan and a nuclear-free world,” says David Kraft, director of Nuclear Energy Information Service, a nuclear-power watchdog organization based in Chicago. “We stand in support of the people of Japan, and members of Noda’s own party who reject nuclear power as too dangerous. We say ‘No more Hiroshimas! No more Fukushimas!’” Continue reading →
ACTION ALERT! 3 major issues need your action and participation this week.
Recent news accounts speak of a dangerously fragile and vulnerable condition of the Fukushima-4 reactor building and spent fuel pool. Should the weakened Reactor-4 building collapse in a future earthquake aftershock, the spent fuel pool would undoubtedly rupture and lose cooling water, resulting in a catastrophic international disaster. There are two things you can do to help prevent this international catastrophe from occurring:
1. Get your organization to sign on to this letter from Japanese activist groups, calling for international assistance in stabilizing the building, and removing the spent fuel:
2. Go to the NIRS website, and sign the petition for individuals, urging President Obama to provide swift support to the Japanese Government to stabilize Reactor Building-4: http://org2.democracyinaction.
org/o/5502/p/dia/action/ public/?action_KEY=10645
2.) OPPOSE FUNDING FOR SO-CALLED “CONSOLIDATED INTERIM STORAGE OF HIGH-LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTES”:
Our colleagues at Beyond Nuclear (and others) have been tracking the recommendation of the President’s Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future calling for the rapid establishment of so-called “consolidated interim storage” HLRW facilities away from reactor sites. This dangerous recommendation could proliferate both the number of waste sites and the amount of transportation of HLRW on America’s terrific roads, rails and waterway systems. Further, Illinois would be a prime contender to host such a site. Two actions are suggested:
1. Contact Sen. Reid’s office, urging opposition of this proposal on the Senate Floor:
2. Contact the offices of BOTH Sens. Durbin and Kirk by Monday, May 21, urging them to oppose this ill-conceived proposal. We provide their contact info below:
Sen. Richard Durbin
Sen. Mark Kirk (202)228-0400 fx
(202) 228-4611 fxwww.Durbin.senate.gov
www.kirk. senate.gov 3.) MARCH WITH NEIS FOR A NON-NUCLEAR FUTURE:
NEIS will be marching for safe-energy and a less nuclear world during the upcoming NATO summit protests in Chicago. We are participating in 2 events, and invite you to march with us, carrying signs and banners:
1. Crime Busting March on Chicago’s Climate Crooks, Friday, May 18th, Daley Plaza (Clark & Washington) @ 1:30 p.m.
March with the NATO Environmental Alliance around the Chicago Loop as we issue warrants for arrest of the corporations and government organizations responsible for destabilizing our climate! These scoundrels have committed heinous crimes of environmental injustice, and we plan make citizen’s arrests on these perpetrators. Exelon will be one of the stops. Gather in Daley Plaza after the National Nurses Union march on Friday, May 18th.
2. Environmental Contingent in CAN/G8 March & Rally, Sunday, May 20th @ noon, NW side Petrillo Bandshell lawn in Grant Park (Columbus & Jackson). Look for a green flag!
We’ll be marching in the HUGE permitted march with thousands of others calling for Planet over Profits and War. We’ll have fun, creative imagery and signs for the march that show how our current system harms people and our planet and some that depict our vision for a just, earth-centered way forward.
RSVP on Facebook, http://www.facebook.
com/events/286684528085764/? ref=ts For more information, to confirm locations & RSVP, visit http://www.
climateactionchicago.org 4.) THE NEXT “KNOW-NUKES” FILM
NEIS will be showing “Rokkasho Rhapsody” on Thursday, May 24th, 6:30 p.m., at Multi-Kulti Center, 1000 N. Milwaukee Ave., 4th floor, Chicago. No charge. This is the story of Japanese anti-nuclear activism BEFORE Fukushima, as local Japanese rice farmers and fisherman try to stop a $20 billion reprocessing facility in Japan. A beautiful movie, in Japanese style.
If you WANT a less-nuclear future, you’ll have to SUPPORT one, with both your time and your gifts. We thank you for the actions you can take, and look forward to seeing you at these important events.
