I have lots of questions about traveling to France for the TdF. I'm trying to make plans for next year's race, and since I've never been, wondered what advice you have for an amateur/freelancer to shoot the race. I've done some work here on the Tour of California, but these are roads I mostly know. How do I go about picking shooting locations without any pre-travel? What are the options on getting media credentials? What media outlets are best to contact for work? On a side note, are you attending the Giro next year, or the ToC? :) Thanks for your time! Chris Callanan (C.Cal.Shoot) Hi Chris, I could give you the perfect answer and at the same make some money out of it - go and buy my 'Tour de France Travel Guide', published by VeloPress in Colorado! Seriously, there is a whole chapter devoted to photographing the Tour from the roadsides, secret tips as well... Your chances of getting media credentials are slim, but not impossible. Basically you need to find a magazine or web-site that has used your images to apply on your behalf to the Tour, who can be contacted via their web-site, www.letour.fr It is rare these days for the Tour to accept direct applications from freelances, so go through a known media if you can. You will still need a bonafide press card to pass their first scrutiny, but after that things start to look good. If you cannot get credentials then it is more challenging but also a lot simpler because you can only see the Tour once a day, but that sighting will have been cleverly researched beforehand and should prove fruitful. Take a look at my Tour guide, there's more advice I can give there than on this web-page... California? Maybe I'll do both if the timings are right and the route of TOC especially worthwhile... GW
